Really? I never had the issue. I've been using adblock on my chrome browser, and adblock plus on Mozilla. I had no issues. (I have it enabled right now actually xD)

By default, if any ad doesn't show the site is coded to minimize that space. However, some add-ons and ad blockers are actually interfering with that and causing issues.

I adblocked the empty tables that were created by the banner ads using Element Hiding Helper. The sidebar ad is gone now, of course, so only "ad-extra-flat" is left.

No. Adblock nailed the banner ad up top, and the square ad in the sidebar (which is no longer there). However, there were big blank spaces where those ads used to be, stretching the site out a bit. Turns out, they were entirely seperate tables named "ad-extra-flat" and "ad-extra-square." Adblocking the tables got rid of the blank spaces and made the site look back to normal.

Any idea of how to stop the bounce up and down?

Everytime a FA page is loaded, theres a brief jumping of the nav bar up towards the monthly banner. Only started recerntly.

It might just be the blank ad table autokilling itself. Try adblocking "furaffinity.net###ad-extra-flat" and see if that helps.

It won't show up in the blockable elements, but you can still add it yourself in custom filters. And that IS the full string.

https://adblockplus.org/en/elemhidehelper - I used this to specifically spot the big invisible ad spaces and block them, though it sounds like yours is disappearing and causing the "bouncing," so it might not detect it when you mouse over.

Adding the string in custom has killed the page bouncing, thank god. It was driving me nuts.

Seems my hypothesis was right then, the blank space was just removing itself and causing the bounce. Glad blocking it worked :)

I added a custom rule to uBlock to resolve that problem.

Just started using Ublock. I like it, but it seems to not play nicely with my Paypal.

you could enable the advanced options and try using the dynamic filtering which uBlock Origin has, the other guy got rid of it in uBlock for some reason which is one major reason why I use uBlock Origin

Seems theres still a response time, with a very noticeable jump when the page is loaded. Jumping to cover the empty space between the navbar and banner. Curiously when looking at Fa in Internet explorer that have no adblock software activated, theres nothing in that spot, yet i still see the jumping happen. when reloading a couple times, it might get stuck and fail on jumping up and leaving an empty space.

I get that things are going to change, but when the side bar came up it was so obnixious not only with the ad but how it shoved the submission way off center.

Hopefully the web designers learned from this and make it less obtrusive and respect the artwork being posted.

Being said web designer, that was my fault and the implementation was... not as it should have been.

To be perfectly fair I'm still running on the classic layout and it was really jarring, not sure how it worked on the beta layout.

Maybe take a page from DA and make it so it starts off to the side and a click brings it to full size and centers it?

Honestly I think it would be wiser to bring newer stuff to the beta version first, see the reaction then tweak it and roll it out to the classic layout until the old version becomes irrelevant due to new features and such.

We're bringing on our new content server, and with that comes massive storage space (yay) and we'll be implementing larger download sizes for files, "High Ress" download support (what you're asking for) and customizable user banners to make user pages nice and spiffy (Beta Only).

If you guys are do 'dedicated' to make this site better, how about listening to the tens of thousands of comments people have given you over the years about what THEY would like to see, instead of just dropping another update on people like youtube did with its 'layout designs'.

In all honesty I'd rather the site say like how it always was (somehow managing to function) than to have unwanted updates forced down peoples' throats

We are listening, and those changes are exactly what we're going to be implementing There's a long list of issues on the table, and those have been worked on. Among the user-requested changes that have been implemented things like disabling comments on new uploads, hiding "Commission Info" for users who don't want/need it, fixing pagination.

Other personalization changes and fixes are coming, along with list of "must haves".

I'm curious as to why it seems so easy for other sites to fix issues and create nice web designs, but for you guys it almost always turn into a complete wreck?

I mean this is the largest furry community website... and by far the most controversial and rumoured too, but why can smaller furry art sites like Weasyl and InkBunny work so well?

I know jack shit about web designing and actually running a complete website so maybe I am just asking dumb questions that supposedly everyone already know...

Because they're newer sites with better coding framework. They're new buildings, easy to update and remodel. FA is an old shack that has slowly had more and more addons until now it's some sort of patchwork Taj Mahal

I've dealt with this at work. I've basically overhauled a site that was written in 2007 and hadn't really been touched. It was easier to redo the whole site (probably 150 pages worth of php) then to try and slap a bandaid on it.

I actually didn't mind the sidebar. it wasn't a problem for me. I didn't see the ad at all and the image quality didn't look any different to me.

Can you fix the time on submissions? For some reason, even though the server time is reading correctly, submissions like this one http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16400358/ are reading an hour earlier than they should be.

If you were truly dedicated to improving the site then you wouldn't do things without consulting the user base. As the whole sidebar thing has proven, not getting feedback first and just doing something (which happens a lot it seems).

People have listed things time and time again of what they would like to see (such as folders) so instead of doing things randomly like this, maybe look into trying to work some of their suggestions into the system.

The TL;DR is I fucked up, and will be focusing more on *that* especially in the future.

My hunch is you guys rolled back the sidebar update because so many people have started using scripts or Adblock which would drastically cut down on your ad revenue. After all, IMVU is in it for the profits and when was the last time you guys actually listend to users? Instead, you'd rather appear incompetent to the users (no harm done since you've been as such for years) on this sidebar debacle by than kill the goose with the golden egg by forcing everyone to neutralize your ads. It's a damned shame that when IMVU revenue and profit is jeopardized, you'll make changes in less than a day, yet you'll sit around for years before you'll make minor improvements for the sake and goodwill of the community.

At the end of the day, you're sorry about a failed implementation and not to the community because you and IMVU keep underestimating and misjudging what the community wants. I don't know what else can prove my very hypothesis that you're not here to serve the community community but rather just as a figurehead to implement whatever IMVU tells you to do, sidebar or otherewise.

The reason it was rolled back is because I took the issues to IMVU, said "This is what users are experiencing, here's the problem, is there anything we can do about it?" and they agree.

I know you're really, REALLY hard pressed to find conspiracy theories in everything , but this is how it went down. Nothing more. People will block ads. While we'd prefer they not, we understand that people are going to do so.

But what you continually seem to whiff and miss on is the lack of trust. And yet you guys continually squander and botch things, like this sidebar, that grinds down trust. The old saying that "one 'oh shit' erases a hundred 'atta-boys'" couldn't be truer for FA and this is just yet another episode.

I'm the last person to kiss anyone's ass, figuratively speaking, and call out bullshit as I see it. But yeah I do not find any conspiracy theory in this especially considering that a company that's interested in ad revenue would not be oblivious to the masses that use ad-blocking software. People will be more inclined to do use them as more "junk" ads come into play so I would think IMVU has already accounted for that. I don't agree with the values of that company but let's be frank: they have serious cash in their pockets so whatever they do, no matter how shitty I may think it is, they're still making money and it's working for them. That's just the plain simple truth.

But yeah, I see nothing more than a bad implementation of ad space that distracted people from the core reason this site exists: art submissions.

I don't know if it would qualify but in the current set up of the image metadata/keywords.. perhaps left align the content rating icon and split that section into 2 columns and put the ad there (I'm on classic theme); because as I scroll down the bit I need to to view the submission, the metadata is right there (I'm on a 1080p display) but it's not, at least to me, put in a position that it's so intrusive that it drives your attention away from the artwork but it's still there to be seen.

...So you're taking basically "receiving what you wanted" and an apology ontop and slapping it out of the dude's hand?

I use this site to show my artwork and make sales when I can. I have had no problems doing this for 10 years. When I have problems doing these things I will simply leave. Obviously anything can be improved and made better, but these conspiracies are misguided and the energy could be put into making a competent rival for this website.

The reason people can't go and just "Create a better site" Is because FA has a huge targeted user base that is unparalleled to other "Furry etc" oriented art websites. People have made better websites in code and in design but they all die off so quickly because people are too scared to move away from FA to begin with.

Artists can't get commissions that MOST desperately need to live off of with out a steady user base

And commissioners can't find artists on other sites because they're all on FA because it's ""Safe"" as far as active users go.

Not one person controls traffic to a website so someone can't simply just "make one with more traffic" That's just flat out stupid. People need to coordinate a mass move if that's what they want to do but things like that have happened in the past with Weasyl for example. But the bottom line is people will keep coming back to FA because people are here, that's the only reason why no one feels safe moving away from it.

Well its a good thing you are following the feedback, so kudos there. I personally did not have an issue with it, but its a good sign that you guys aknowledged the fact that the community (generally, there are some people who liked it, or did not mind it) did not approve of it and did something for that. I didn't get the ads but it kind of detracts from the submission space, which should be the focal point of the page. You made the right call.

I was going to stop posting regularly on here until it was fixed, and I'm glad it was.
The problem is not JUST the distracting, ugly ads. because I understand that adspace IS a thing that is going to happen on this site since IMVU purchased FA.
But I REALLY, REALLY hope you reconsider adding any sort of adspace/sidebar on the sides of images. Monitors are only so wide and it can really drastically mess up the layout. I like to upload slightly larger images but 1500 isn't that much. But the fact that it broke the page on anything larger than 1280 is awful.. leave the horizontal space out of this! :(

i think the way the information is shown (favorites, tags, etc) is fine as is. I don't think it's something that really needs changes unlike other aspects of the UI that people really want to fix. It felt really out of place not being near the rest of the submission info, in my eyes.

Well. That's just rude, and really unnecessary. Can I ask what your logic is posting that on the lead's journal? Is insulting and bashing people one of those things that you think's just fine, admin or not?

Thank you. Because of my need for using large fonts, that sidebar was going way beyond the width of my monitor, and the text in it was overlapping the right side any images that were wider than around 1,000 pixels. And, that was on the classic UI. Now I can actually see the full width of images again.

I don't have any issues with unobtrusive ads, nor with new features. I have a huge problem when new features aren't fully tested, and break accessibility for people with low vision who use large fonts. The site needs to work equally well for people who use small fonts or large fonts, as most sites on the web do. It's sort of needed in order to be compliant with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), or similar acts in other countries. Please keep that in mind during testing, as it makes the site better for everyone, with absolutely no loss to anyone. It lets users resize their text through a range for comfortable reading without breaking things. Ignoring this makes the new UI inaccessible to a lot of people. The classic UI works very well in this regard. The beta is currently an accessibility nightmare for many people with low vision. Stuff runs off the screen. Text overlaps or is clipped. Some pages require horizontal scrolling, which should never need to happen. Page elements partially cover other elements. If a ten-year-old UI can handle a wide range of user font sizes without these issues, then a new UI should be able to handle it as well.

Testing these things is what the beta is for of course. Please, don't let anything that is not fully tested and working for everyone make it into the classic UI.

Keep in mind that about 15 percent of the population has significant vision problems, and many of them are going to be using large fonts system-wide on their computers. Keeping this in mind might actually make things better for mobile users too, as everything would simply be more flexible to accommodate screen and font size variations.

The only thing I had/have a issue with is getting Malware/adware from this site when not using Adblocker, which I didn't want to use so that I could still help artists-ads :c

That's part of the reason I avoided Deviantart like the plague for a looooong time. I think they finally got their act together though on that. It's been playing nice lately.

And it's the artists ads that make me sad when people just say, "I don't get ads. I block them." I've found a few artists I wanted to watch through them... and a friend started off great here with her ad.

I avoided DA for that reason aswell.

It's very disappointing, I know there is a journal going around that gives you directions on how to block google ads but not Artist-ads, but you have to work with extensions and I ain't too good with that! Ads also helped me alot when I moved over to this account, so I hope they get a work around for it :/

Indeed. This whole IMVU thing just ensures that FA's adspace is bereft of any value whatsoever. Noone is going to dare risk allowing an ad through with all these autodownloaders and punchmonkeys taking over.

As someone who has long had Adblock turned off on this site, I can safely say you're wrong. By the time I saw the sidebar, the IMVU ads had already been pulled; the only ads I see these days - top and bottom - are FA-relevant, and nothing obviously more demanding than an animated GIF. (I can't say if some of them are actually Flash behind the scenes, although I don't think they are - but I certainly haven't seen any that make noise or try to be "interactive.")

The literally dozens of pictures posted to the news threads, forums, and individual journals all argue otherwise.

Also it's already been confirmed by FA themselves that the ads involve, include, and depend on javascript.

Thank you for reverting back. FA is one of my favorite sites, and in my opinion all it needs is a few fixes. Though between the side bar and the beta I fear you are trying to copy other sites' bad qualities.
DA's feeling of more about the ads than the art.

What still has not been addressed is that Google AdSense does not allow ads to be placed on sites with adult content. How was this service chosen as the new ad system? Were the options considered, taking into account the fact that Google ads would not be allowed on this site?

Because we're not using Google AdSense, but a difference service. And further, Google and FA have worked together in the past (Google has contacted me several times directly). Google doesn't care so long as their ads are not showing on pages which have mature content.

What ad service are you using? I wasn't aware that Google had another system. (unless I don't have a proper understanding of AdSense vs. AdWords)

So, under these terms, pages with content marked as mature/adult won't have Google-supplied ads? How is that a good, consistent design? And what about users that may not mark their content as mature?

Well then they would be breaking FA's own rules because mature artwork has to be marked as such.

Are the changes in effect now? I still cannot navigate in classic or beta on mobile...moving around causes a menu to open in the background and I can't get to notifications or anything at all unless i tap around and pray.

Well, the UI/interface is a new area and I'm learning, experimenting and testing things out. I recognize other mistakes and sins of the past, and have tried to avoid them moving forward (e.g. fully changing how we hire/bring on staff, how we train them).

Good job on undoing that. Theres already enough ads and that was just in the way.

Have to say it freaked me out though, I wouldn't have left FA but there would definitely be some resentment. But I also understand to keep the some going and make improvements there needs to be some income. While I'd like FA to remain AD free, some better implementation would make a transition like that easier to swallow.

I gotta say Dragoneer, I know you've been through your up's and down's lately! I know it must be hard to make the site better. I'm not sure what people tell me about FA and IMVU.

I've been working some 12-16+ hours a day for the past week on tweaks and improvements to the site. Kind of tired. And sometimes good intentions just don't pan out the way you quite thought, and this was definitely one of them.

Give yourself a pat on the back. You tried, you made a mistake, you admitted to it and learned from the whole thing.

Whyyyyyy are changes being made to the old site layout when there is a whole new layout you guys are working on. Priorities ? Hello man get your shit together before you chase all your user base off!

Some changes will need to be carried over to the old UI to ensure functionality and consistency. In this case, the method we went about it was the wrong one. But others (like disabling comments on uploads) do get carried over to the "classic" UI.

when will it be time to ditch the classic UI and never look back ? the New UI is fantastic and is all you should be focusing on.

The new UI is still problematic - thus "beta." One problem I've personally run into which forced me back to Classic for the time being: if a submission has a broken thumbnail, I absolutely could not click on it with the beta UI. With the classic UI it at least had a hotspot.

If it works for you, great! But it's still a work in progress.

Making changes will always be hard, you're removing folks from their comfort zone. Even the whole range of comments here is pretty good evidence to that fact. The good thing is you recognized that the change was not really good for the users in that it was taking the focus away from the content that this site is meant to showcase, and that there should be a way to have ads that are unobtrusive. It's good to see an active movement toward change on the site, while it can be nice sitting on something that has become "comfortable," it's even better to see visible improvements to the site. Hopefully the community will understand that the change is probably going to be a bit rocky.

Keep your ear to the ground and your finger on the pulse of the community. You're not going to be able to please everyone, but recognizing when something isn't working and making proper changes or rollbacks to fix the issue is a positive thing and will hopefully allow you to figure out what exactly will work.

The implementation of that was rather bad.

You have to remember how many of your users are still very uncomfortable with IMVU being involved in this site. Many understand why you did, but others don't. As such, there are still a lot of people not happy with it, and with that side bar, and the terrible looking IMVU ad's taking up space with the actual submissions like it was, it just made it worse for those members. To have that big, and repulsive of an Ad shoved in their faces, made it 100 times worse. Even running AdBlock software like many of us do, it still looked terrible.

Bravo for you admitting your mistake freely and publicly . You've earned much respect back from many people, my self included.

Fur Affinity surfaced what? 2005? I've been a user since before FA was your baby. I never speak up to anything of matters like this; This time I'm speaking up because I don't want to see the site sink in the clutches of something like IMVU.

We removed ads which do so, and have been actively forcing their removal when brought to our attention.

The site is being improved, and we've got some major hardware upgrades going into play very soon (this week, hopefully).

The sidebar was NOT a bad idea, just badly implemented.

Dragoneer, do you have any comment on you bringing Sciggles back into the fold as Admin, after the issues that occured the last time she was in that position? Is this not a conflict of interests, something of which you said you'd avoid in the past?

I don't. She's focusing on helping resolve art theft issues and helping other admins, that's it.
