MRotW: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

Figured if I moved the title of the film into the title of the journal, it might bring in a few more clicks (at the very least it'll make it easier for me to tell the difference between each rec. journal without having to click on them).
A classic slapstick comedy (remade in 2001 as the not-nearly-as-funny-as-it-should-be Rat Race), this is a movie that tends to get referenced quite a bit nowadays (especially by The Simpsons). The story follows a collection of cars driving along the freeway in the California desert who witness an accident: a car, driving recklessly, heads over a cliff and the driver is shot out onto the rocks. Everyone rushes to the badly-injured man, and before he kicks the bucket, he confides in them that he buried $350,000 under a big W on the coast 200 miles away. This sparks a mad race for the money from everyone involved, and few more passerby that get dragged in along the way. Cars and planes get destroyed, stores get brought down, and people go all out in desperation for a shot at being the first one to the loot.
The movie is absolutely hilarious, a complete avalanche of slapstick and wordplay humor (all PG, aside from the occasional innuendo). This film also has a thing for destroying buildings; at least three go down, and possibly more if I remember correctly. The destruction of an auto station early on by a distraught mover in particular is a stitch.
If it weren't a degrading term, I'd say this is one of the most bloated movies I've ever seen. The cast is packed with faces (probably more well known to your grandparents than to you, of course), fronted by the one and only Spencer Tracy as a police detective following along. A bundle of famous comedy stars make numerous cameo appearances as well (the Three Stooges are there! Sure, only for a single shot standing still, but they're still there!).
No be warned, this is a long movie (probably the longest comedy I've ever seen). Tipping the scales at anywhere between 154 and 192 minutes (depending on what version you find; I think the DVD is 174), complete with a genuine intermission. Long as it is, I say it's worth it (though I was never one to let running time dissuade me. In fact, I usually like my movies longer rather tan shorter). The madcap hilarity that comes from everything getting progressively more and more insane takes a while to get through, and even when you think it's all winding down it adds a little more. And really, what's the matter with that? It just means more and more laughs.
A classic comedy that's fun for the whole family (I've literally seen this with people from age 8 to 80, and they've loved it), and one I do hope you all find time to check out.
