So why the hell are you a shark anyways?

:3 Now there's a question I don't mind answering at all!
I'm a shark for personality reasons, none of this simple "I think they look cool" stuff. Though they do look absolutely awesome, hot, and ever since I realized I was one, they became my favorite animal.
But how I narrowed down that I was a shark started when I figured out I loved being in the water more than I loved being airborne or walking around on the ground. If it weren't for the embarrassment factor, the temperature thing, and the fact that normal everyday life is done on the ground, I would spend every waking minute of my life in the pool, just relaxing as I feel the water pressing in on me :3
From that realization I knew I was an aquatic of some sort, either a whale, fish, shark, dolphin, otter, or other. I took otter off the list when I added the fact that I LOVE smooth skin into it. I only just started shaving my belly recently, and after the first time I literally couldn't keep my hands from rubbing it :3
So I went another step into my personality and realized that I run a lot of my life via instinct and snap decisions, but that when I need to, I always put thought into whatever I'm deciding, and from there I ruled out the lower aquatics and dolphins (they always seem to think about their actions without running off instinct) and knew I was either a whale or a shark. They were the best fit, and it was tough figuring out between the two. I'm a loner, but I travel in groups when I need to, which is a property of both. I teach whatever skills I've gained to others that wish to know or get close to me, which helped a bit because it removed all whales except for orca's.
The thing that made me realize it was a shark that I was, was my appetite. I am, in real life, I'm the closest thing you can get to a feeding frenzy. Every time I see, smell, or even is hinted that there is food, I immediately get hungry no matter when I last ate, and go looking for it. And when I eat, I eat a LOT. One of the reasons I'm so big is before I learned to control my appetite, I would eat entire boxes of Elios pizza for a single meal. All this lead me to go "an orca doesn't get hungry ALL the time, an orca methodically eats and sets up his meal." And from there, I went "I'm a shark". And since then I've been finding more and more tiny details that I have in common with sharks, now too many to list.
As for how I came up with my species of hybrid Blue shark and Great White, well, shark's are mostly the same in how they behave across the entire set of species, so I took those two and combined them for their looks :3 After all, I wanted Iron Gut to be sexy after all XD. And that's how I went through the entire animal spectrum and came down to one genus that fit me the best.

Ohhhh the topic of where did your sharkdom come from :D I am SO glad this is a topic to talk about! This is probably one of my fave furry topics of all. Simply put for me, I didn't chooce to be a shark, I figured out that I was closest to one when after spending 2 years lurking in the fandom, I decided I should really pick a species and make a character.
Basically when I decided to make a fursona, I wanted it to be deep/have meaning, there's few things I hate worse int he fandom than when people go "Why am I a fox? Because foxes are cool ^^" .... ...really?.... you are a simpleton. So basically what I decided to do was to figure out in as unbiased a way as I could, which species traits lined up with my own as a real person, and so I basically developed my "three questions method" for figuring out a species that best suits someone, which you can see here in my species guide: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/6816792/
The questions started with firstly, what's my domain? am I a land creature, a sea dweller, or an airborne creature. From the facts about how I hate land sports (playing them anyways) along with running and being barefoot in the grass and dirt and being muddy and everything I ruled out land. Air was closer seeing as how I loved roller coasters for a while, driving with the window down, I like the feel of moving air/wind, and if given the chance I absolutely would go bungee jumping, skydiving, or take up a sport such as skateboarding or BMX; the hitch was that it wasn't something that defined me, such as how I didn't like near an airport or spend lots of time climbing stuff and I've never taken the opportunity to actually do any of those flight related things, I don't even own a trampoline! Aquatic was the one that best suited me, because I live near the shoreline, always LOVED visiting the beach, and I so adore the feeling of being int he water that the biggest thing I hate about our house my entire life is that we don't have a pool, I love the rain and I'll choose a bath over a shower anyway, and I will stay in either of them for hours upon hours if it weren't that I couldn't be on the internet at the same time XD.
So, that narrowed things down, and then the next question to ask to narrow it further was body covering. What kind of surfaces do you like the feeling of? What's most appealing to your sense of touch? and that I figured there were three choices for; furry, scaly, and skinned/smooth. Furry doesn't fit me at all, I don't grow my hair out at all and in fact I hate hair aside from what it does asthetically, I really don't get anything out of fuzzy softness like from wearing wool or cotton over any other material, and things like walking barefoot on carpet, doesn't excite me at all. Scaly was second place as that'd be the type of textures like brick or concrete, sandpaper and bumpy surfaces, which I do enjoy some of, but not all of them, brick is one that I can just feel and enjoy, but things like sandpaper or wood that has veins, no thanks. Skinned was the best, as it was the total opposite of furry; I ADORE such smooth feelings of vinyl and rubber, I shave many more places on my body than most people do, from my belly and thicks to my pelvis and ass among other places XD
So I was narrowed down to skinned aquatics, which was really easy to come up with a list for. That list being dolphins, sharks, orcas, whales, eels, frogs, salamanders, newts, and a few others. I took out the latter ones from eels and onwards simply because I didn't feel any sort of fascination with them at all, well save for frogs, but frogs would be eliminated on the third question anyways. The orca, dolphin, and shark though, all intrigued me quite a lot, and I could definitely see myself as being one of the three for sure, and so I proceeded with the third question, which is what kind of appetite do you have? This one there were 4 choices I came upwith, so I'm not gonna go through all of them here, but basically out of voracious, picky, calculated, and sloppy eaters, I was voracious, and so that got rid of the dolphin and just left me with one choice, shark or orca.
And this is where the choice made itself, was the decision to not decide between the two right away, but let it simmer and let my brain realize all sorts of tiny little traits and such that I ha in common and total up which side had more. I saw things like about how shark's are mostly docile and such until threatened and then they attack, they are also very independent unlike orcas who go in pods, they will be lazy in obtaining their food (IE ambush predator, just wait for the right moment and strike once, unlike an orca who will get into a battle of sorts), I have a very heightened sense of touch and a good understanding of psychology which is similar to the shark having the 6th sense along their snout detecting vibrations and electrical charge, and tons of other little things as well that I could go on listing for ages XD Including the fact I chew on pennies and discovering that an aquarium could be as awesome a place as a science center (my favorite places to go as a kid when traveling XD) and that my favorite theme park ever kept coming back to Sea World, and yeah, again i can go on forever XD
And so I settled it, I was a shark. And that was that ^^ I made up IronGut based off of my personality, choosing his appearance to be fat like me and red because red was a fairly unused and good looking color to contrast with the ocean's blue, and it all just grew organically from there ^^ So yay shark!
