I'm entirely glad that BUM will be posted for free and that Patreon is not being used to paywall it. So many artists do that and I think it's wrong to alienate those who supported the artist over the years, because money.

I am absolutely bouncing in my seat waiting to see this =D

You can't eat support

You can't earn money from fans if you don't have fans... so don't punish those who got you to the point where you can make a living from your artwork by not letting them see it anymore.

Yeah, but you also can't get money from your fans if they don't give you money, that's kinda the issue there. Besides, it's kind of bad attitude that refusing to give you something for nothing is a punishment. You don't expect a supermarket to give you free gasoline because you park on the forecourt a lot, right?

Look, the fact still remains that an artist does not get popular without their fans... and suddenly turning around and restricting those fans from viewing what they've been supporting is dickish. You're essentially telling your fanbase "Oh, you can't give me money? I guess you weren't that much of a fan of mine, were you? Too bad.", again pointing out the fact that, without fans like this, the artist wouldn't have become popular and, if they tried to make a paywall Patreon to "learn their living", would make next to no money.

Your fans are a part of what made you. Treat them well and they'll respect you. Treat them like they don't matter and they won't.

Define "support" in this context?

Watching, favouriting and commenting, giving the artist confidence and drive to continue. Possibly helping by catching the odd mistake in the picture, so they can correct it in the final form. Telling their friends about the artist so they can check them out and become new fans, expanding the fanbase and helping them become more popular. Ordering commissions if they can (when they're open) or recommending the artist to someone who's looking to comission someone.

Artists don't get to the point where they can make a living off their if nobody knows about them. So getting to that point, then suddenly forcing their fanbase to pay money to see their work is a colossal slap in the face. Sure, those who want to donate and support the artist in that way can, but those who are unable to are now being told that their devotion and support up to that point means nothing to the artist.

That's why I have far more respect for someone like Whitemantis, who gives the option for people to support her works by donation, rather than someone who makes them donate to see it at all. It shows they remember their fans, the care they gave and that they care just as much back.

That's mostly ignoring the fact that the artist has to do the actual work that attracts people to them, and that if you have a problem with paying it's generally fairly trivial to find the work online for free anyway. If you're such a big fan, why is it a problem being asked to actually pay for something?

I've never been clear on how Patron works. It's sort of a periodic donation, right? Like, every once in a while you donate a certain amount that you choose as a way to support the artist?

Pure curiosity. Unfortunately (as always), right now I don't have a cent to my name that isn't destined for something already. Damn basic human requirements for survival...
