MRotW: Audition
Shigeharu Aoyama lives with his 17-year-old son, owns his own company, and is doing fairly well for himself. However, he's a sad individual up close, still mourning the loss of his wife seven years earlier. Encouraged by his son to meet someone new but not wanting to get rejected at this late stage of life, his TV producer friend makes a proposal: hold an audition. Drum up a fake part for a movie, set the actress specifications at what he wants in a wife, and see who shows up. Almost immediately he is smitten with one quiet young girl, and begins to court her for marriage.
But something's not quite right with this girl. Maybe it's just the way she looks at people, or her quiet voice. Maybe it's the fact that no one can get in touch with anyone who knows her. Maybe it's the way she sits on the floor of her apartment, staring at her phone for days on end...
You don't need me to tell you things don't end well.
So, it's a Japanese movie. A Japanese horror movie. A Japanese horror movie that's not some PG-13 ghost story. That should be some indication this movie does some rather unsettling things.
I'll be frank; this is not a movie for the faint of heart. This is a horror movie for the more determined horror fans out there. While it's not especially gory (or rather, not gory at all. I'd place it somewhere between the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Battle Royale in terms of use of the red stuff), it is definitely quite twisted, dark, disturbing, and cringe inducing (and, depending on your stance on certainly bodily fluids, vomit-inducing as well).
It's especially interesting how the movie sets itself up. Starting with a rather tasteful and touching death scene, it moves slowly and steadily along. There's a minor sense of unease, but for the most part it plays rather innocently. Certainly easy to watch. Then, about four-fifths of the way through, it seems to find another gear and shoots forward into a whole different league. Things start to get rather dreamlike and surreal in nature for a bit, before it comes crashing down to a cold, harsh reality that will make your skin crawl.
Overall it's an excellent movie, definitely a great horror movie. It's a scary watch and not for the weak willed, and I'd say it's worth it to make an attempt to get through it.
