MRotW: Observe and Report

Ronnie Barnhardt is the head of mall security, and he's got a problem. Several problems, actually. There's a flasher going around exposing himself to female customers, someone's robbing the mall at night, the police don't respect him, and he hasn't had any luck trying to woo the slutty make-up counter girl he has a crush on. People look at him and think he's a joke, they mock him and don't think he's of any real use. Well it's time for him to change that, to change himself and become a hero for everyone.
I'll be honest, when the movie first started rolling I wasn't too impressed. It seemed like just another Seth Rogan movie, him doing his thing and collecting a paycheck. Some jokes were alright, but for the most part it wasn't anything I would go out of my way for.
But then the movie changes course, goes places you didn't think it was even going to look at, and ended up really surprising me. See, Ronnie's got some issues. Mental issues. Bi-polar, delusions of grandeur (he takes his job really, really seriously), and when he stops taking his meds, things go haywire. And it turns into one of the funnier movies that I've seen in a very long time, and definitely one of the best I've seen this year.
A big part of what makes this movie so great is Seth Rogan. See, this isn't the Rogan you think you know from his previous outings, the lovable goofball stoner (though it may seem like it is for the first half hour or so). This is a dark, edgy, occasionally disturbing Rogan, who masks all his problems with his general expressions. And unlike what you may expect out of mall security, this is no bumbling rent-a-cop. Ronnie is very, very capable of delivering a serious ass-kicking, as he does several times in the film (one that reminded me a lot of the alleyway mugging fight in Watchmen).
Now, I'll admit that this movie isn't for everyone. Far from it, in fact. It's a very dark comedy at times, sometimes nihilistic, generally offensive, and at times just outright mean. It's a type of humor that not everyone may appreciate, but the ones that do will absolutely adore this movie. It's a movie that dances over the tasteful line of dark and edgy, and occasionally have you laughing at things that you would normally not find funny at all (the buzz is about the supposed rape scene, though I wouldn't really call it rape at all. You'll see what I mean). I've seen a lot of comparisons of this movie to Taxi Driver, and that really does make the most sense (especially since the director basically wanted to make a comedy out of that movie).
Overall, after a rocky start, it became an excellent movie. Hilarious in every way (I'll definitely be seeing it again), memorable, great characters, and one of the greatest endings in any movie, period, it's a hell of a comedy. Many of you may not like it (some may even hate it), but I really think you should all at least give it a chance.
Trailer: Actually, it's better if you go into this one with no idea what to expect.

Tomorrow night then :)
I thought the ring 2 was going to be an awesome movie (the first was my favorite), turned out to be the biggest flop of the year.
I wasn't a fan of Madagascar and just seeing the trailer for the sequel didn't impress me too much either. Well we rented it and I had nothing better to do so I just sat and watched it. I actually liked it though :)
I want to see that movie you just reviewed, I keep forgetting the na--you have it as the title of your journal *walks over to a book hit myself over the head with it* IDIOT! My dumb moment of the day...
Hope you enjoy the movie!
Still, it can be rather confusing, especially for people who just started to watch me. I'll try and think of a shorter title to use without needing to resort to an acronym
