How should I go about practicing? Also, learning difficulty
9 years ago
Alright so I'm trying to get practicing but motivation is very sparse and hard to obtain it seems. I'm trying to figure out how I should go about practicing besides just ya know, actually doing it. I understand that but I feel as if I'll be missing something important if I just go and do it. I'm having a hard time with poses, doing them from imagination that is. I've been told before that if I have problems with drawing from the imagination, I'm still a beginner. Understandable it seems but poses are a bitch and a half sometimes. I get basic structure and such but actually doing them without a ref is beyond tough. I tried looking into figure drawing and such but it seems to just go over my head (Like a lot of things sadly). I tried looking at some books too but so far things are evading me
I'm really stuck on this and giving it all I got and then some but I'm having such a hard time with practice and such, its really starting to get to me. Does anyone have any sort of suggestion for me on how to go about practicing? Or maybe can explain figure drawing in a way that seems to cater to my thought process. Its possible that I might be overthinking it

I've worked so hard that my legs are so sore right now. We have this big inspection coming up Thursday and I got all this put on me at the last minute and I've been running around like a maniac trying to get it all together. Can't wait to leave haha
It's not about "feeling" it. It's more about disciplining yourself enough to force yourself to draw even when it looks like shit. If it looks like shit, try it again. And keep trying it until you can manage to get something you like. If I waited around for inspiration to draw, I'd probably draw far less than I already do, and that's pretty scarce as is. Sometimes I find too, when I force myself to draw and I don't want to, it actually comes out even better.
When you sketch, try to keep your hand loose. Your gesture drawings will likely be messy. Keep reworking them until it looks good. Also, if you can, try to see if you can do some live drawing practice for figure drawing. It's easier to learn from real models. If you can't get that, photos on deviantart are also great. Pose maniacs is pretty good, but know the anatomy isn't 100% correct on the models. It's close enough to work, just keep that in mind.
Just keep practicing. It will take time but you can learn. :)
Secondly, yeah I agree, I've just been told that I can't force it too much or I'll burn out and I think I've got a little bit of that right now. I'll keep on trying and I do hope to receive the same results as yourself. I'm having troubles on how to go about actually doing gesture drawing. I understand the concept but can't seem to do the execution and its pretty frustrating
I'll try that loose hand thing, not sure how good it works with a tablet though but we'll see. Yeah I use a lot of different poses from all across the net, including this site that sorta runs through em for around 30 seconds to like 5 minutes to practice gesture work. It was a pretty awesome find. Although I didn't realize that Pose Maniacs didn't have 100% anatomical accuracy, thats good to know thanks
I sure hope you're right, I've been working really hard at almost every single day
I'll be working diligently on it!
