Sisco's quick guide to writing erotica
Ok well :icontristan black wolf: is producing a really good journal series introducing writing. I won’t try to match him because he is putting it all very eloquently and with style. However, there is one area of writing few people talk about but many people enjoy. That is erotica, let’s face it a good deal of people are here looking for something titillating, there is nothing wrong or shameful in that. I just wanted to put down a little bit of advice to those who are looking to add a little bit of smut to the world of literature. So here it is Sisco’s quick guide to writing erotica:
1. It’s all about the story: Ok here is where most erotica falls down the writer lets the sex dictate the story and not the other way on. We are born and raised with stories all around us, before we learn to speak our parents tell us stories, we watch them, read the, listen to them and live them every day. You may not realise it but your brain is an expert at picking out what is real and what is not. For the sex to be truly immersive and erotic the story needs to be the same. It needs to make sense, it needs to flow. It is actually as important in making an erection as graphic descriptions of sexual scenes.
2. Story is about characters: A narrative flows from the characters involved in it. Those characters need to be developed; people are not going to pop wood or get moist for some faceless body having sex. The balance between what you need to describe and what you need to leave implied is one of the hardest parts of writing erotica. It is something to learn through trial and error over many years and something I am still learning. Give a physical description but don’t fill in too many details and don’t do it all in one paragraph, spread the details like little tasty sweets throughout the story. Let the reader pick them up at a gentle pace. Each new detail, be it physical, emotional or historical, brings the reader closer to the character. The closer they are the more aroused they will be when that character is having sex.
3. Stay true to the character you create: again many erotica stories fall foul here, vanilla characters suddenly turn ultra kinky just to please the sex scene, this break the reader’s immersion in the story. It is a boner killer, or at least weakener. You can use extreme situations to get characters to do something a little out of character. For example in my story New Years Day (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/18659036/) Roy is a rather reserved guy but with the application of alcohol he relaxes enough to enjoy some fun with friends. However, he doesn’t suddenly become a total nympho, he dips his toe (and cock) in, enjoys it and then maybe next time he will do more but it will make sense for his character to do so.
4. Sex, it’s not just a mechanical act: Sex is a deeply emotional thing; even group sex is filled with emotions and feelings. If you just describe penis A going into orifice B C and D, it is not as arousing as hearing the emotions, the feelings the little things that connect the character and reader to the act. They have followed the characters from the beginning to this act and they want to know how they feel, it helps them imagine how they would feel. Also don’t get too hung up on describing things like cock size, saying someone has a cock 10 inches long by 4.5 inches wide with a flare 7.8 inches and a medial ring 5.5 inches at the halfway point is not very erotic and is very controlling of a writer. By giving a few less specifics you let the reader’s mind fill in the blanks with what they desire most. A huge cock to me may not be huge to someone else and etc, a little bit of vagueness allows readers to get what they want. Give them what they want and they will get so much more enjoyment out of it.
Ok I think that’s enough for now, I am a big believer in writing and in sharing. Sex in stories is fun and it is real, sex is a wonderful part of life, erotica merely acknowledges and celebrates that aspect of life.
Oh and on a separate note *coughs* please consider buying my book Dyeing to be with you, so far it has had many good reviews.

That said, I do agree with the points you listed and I adhere to them almost religiously. As much as sex can be titillating, story is still what justifies the sex. It is a "story" afterall.
First challenge, figure out how a faceless character would get someone to go with them...
Hmm. actually I wonder what kind of life a faceless person would have... That might be a more interesting story...
Besides, as much as I like it. I don't want it to be my thing. Maybe when I have some good stories and can pick out my own mistakes >..<
