His Official Capacity: Creative Commons License
16 years ago
If you've read His Official Capacity, you know my fursona is a diplomat who (as subsequent chapters will reveal) gets deeply engrossed in his work.
Well, there's a reason for that -- my brain-meats tend to churn over minutiae.
I've noticed that, outside of outright art theft and claiming another person's character as your own, there's not a lot of discussion about copyright and fair use on FA. Everything goes along happily until someone gets upset about someone else's character resembling his, or someone swiping a pose, or things along those lines.
The FA Terms of Service are pretty straightforward about copyright: Artwork found on FA is copyright the original artist unless otherwise stated. If you created it, it's yours, and even FA itself can only copy or manipulate it for administrative purposes ( favorites pages, thumbnails, etc.).
After a conversation between myself, darkwulf, and our silent partner, we decided we wanted to make the permissions of what you can do with our little magnum opus more explicit, so we decided to apply a Creative Commons License.
His Official Capacity, by Darkwulf and Velachko, is ©2009, and is licensed under the

The terms of this license in no way conflict with the FurAffinity Terms of Service or Submision Agreement.
So, in plain English, what does this mean?
It means you're free to draw the characters and events of the stories. It means you can turn His Official Capacity into a comic, or an audio book, or a full-length animated feature. You can write or draw a crossover with your characters. You can even post the original stories on your own site!
However, you can ONLY do these things IF:
* You credit Velachko and Darkwulf.
* You don't sell copies of the original, or the derivative works.
* Any derivative works must be released under this or a similar license.
It's all in the link, really. But what it really means is, YES, YOU CAN! Go ahead, have fun with these characters. But if you make that big-screen CGI epic with the toy deals and the posters, we want our cut!
