*Sighs happily and rubs his tired paws*
Wuff just spent 9+ hours standings on the concrete floor of an industrial/commercial type kitchen at a local Teen's homeless shelter called "Urban Peak". Vrghr's poor paws are feeling the effects - that concrete is very unforgiving.
One of wuffy's office coworkers is a major volunteer at Urban Peak. She put together a "Community Service Day" for our office, and offered several suggestions for ways we could help our community. They included a full building "GI Party", a session with Parks and Rec doing trails maintenance, or a "Kitchen Day" of making goodies for the kids. Well, you know which way wuff voted! *grins*
The "Kitchen Day" was the winner. So Vrghr, his roomie, and 4 others from the office hit the door of the center at 7AM Saturday morning. We started off by making about 50 breakfast burritos, so the kiddos could have a nice breakfast on Saturday, and refrigerate the rest for quick breakfasts throughout the week.
Then we went a bit crazy and starting making all sorts of things that could be quickly or easily cooked/heated/baked by the staff and volunteers. But we wanted things that would be good and tasty too! These teens have a hard time, and a nice, nourishing and tasty meal is even more important when it might be the only one you get that day.
Here's a list of what we ended up with by the end of the day:
- Breakfast Burritos
- Beef and Bean burritos
- Cinnamon Spice Muffins
- Black Bean Vegetarian Chili
- Butternut Squash & Lentils Soup
- Ginger Peach Chicken
- "Classic" Lasagna
- Chicken cordon bleu
- Stuffed Manicotti w/Marinara Sauce
- Robust Zitti
- Soup Beans w/ Ham Shanks
- Hawaiian Chicken w/Colorful Veggies & Brown Rice
- Kielbasa & Onions w/ Curried Lentils & Veggies
Oh, and we also put together 20 sack lunches with chips, sandwiches, fruit, and drinks, for the kids to take with them (since we pretty much took over the entire kitchen and dining room to put these all together).
Wuff was proud to create the Hawaiian Chicken (2 HUGE steamer trays full) and the Soup Beans (4+ Gallons). You can find the recipe for those soup beans in Vrghr's FA gallery here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14842529/
Just LOOK at all those goodies!!
We filled up every square inch of their storage freezer, and had to do a lot of shifting about to get it all to fit. Most of those are in big 1 gallon zip storage bags. They can take them out to the refrigerator the night before, and just pour what they need into a waiting crock pot, set it, and forget it. Others, like the chicken and lazagna, are prepped in disposable trays. All of them have stickers to tell what's inside and how to cook it.
When the kids come in at night, supper will be waiting. And it won't matter if they have a full house of 20, or just a few (they were packed when we were there).
Vrghr's paws may be sore, but his spirit is soaring!
Bon Appetite!
