"The Jet Gamer" Review: Guinness World Records the VideoGame

Once again, back to the cheapo Wii games.
Guinness World Records the Video Game
Yeah, when you hear this video game name, you almost don’t expect much at all from it. How in the world could something like this even be fun? I guess it really depends on who you are asking with a game like this. This may be the very game some people may be looking for, but who knows. A video game that is about the Guinness book of world records? How in the world does that even work? Well, let us take a closer look and find out shall we?
Gameplay
I’m sure as I just mentioned, you are wondering how in the world the Guinness book of world records could even work as a video game? Well, the way they did it was pretty much making this a game of nothing but mini games. Each mini game is a different record for the player to try and break. This is split up into a few dozen different records for the player to break, so there is some variety to pick from in the mini games that are offered. There are such events as how many watermelons can you smash with your head in a minute, to how fast can you eat a plane. Yeah, these are quite odd, but some of them make more sense, such as the land speed record, and highest BMX jump. The records are spread around a large world map that you make the avatar of your choice walk around on to pick which region you want to play games in at the moment. This has nothing really to do with any of the games though, other than just being split around on the map. If they are in those specific areas for a specific reason, then I have no clue what it was. It was never explained. Each region has three games in it, but only the first game is available to play. You have to play the first games in each region to earn points to be able to unlock the first and second games in the regions. There is really nothing special about unlocking these other games, as they are pretty much the same type of games as all the other games. Each mini game pretty much involves the player waving the wiimote and sometimes the nunchuk as well to make the character move around on the screen or doing other motions with the wiimote to do things like hit things in a DDR motion to hit buttons to make the player go faster, or to just shake the controller as fast as you can to make a character go faster or for example, popping a lot of balloons as fast as possible. I know it may seem like I’m skimping over some details, but here it the thing, a lot of this is just sort of dull, but not really bad either. That is sort of the main thing I have with this game. The gameplay isn’t exactly bad by any means, but everything is just sort of dull. If you enjoy playing mini games for a short period of time, this game does offer that, and in an inventive way that other games don’t really offer. However, there just doesn’t seem to be any reason to do this other than just wanting to pretend you are making actual records in the book of world records. This does seem like a good time waster, or a game that maybe a family with some younger kids could have a good time playing together for a family game night, but other than that, there just doesn’t seem to be any appeal to this game other than just the appeal of mini games. Mini games can be fun when done right or in combination with other gameplay elements, but on their own, mini games are just that, they are mini games. Mini games on their own just honestly don’t have the kind of lasting appeal that a real long game can have for people. This is a one night time waster. There is nothing wrong with that, it is just boring in the long run.
Story
Not applicable, this is just a game full of mini games. There is no story at all.
Graphics
Eh, this game looks okay, but there is nothing impressive at all about this game. I didn’t exactly see any glitches at all, which is a bit surprising for a cheapo Wii game like this, but at the same time, they didn’t exactly go out of their way to make this the best looking game there was either. Everything looks basic, and really like they were just trying to get the game out there as quickly as possible. Things look simple. The character designs are simple, and really, most of the games are simple as well. That is a common thing you are going to see in this game. This game isn’t exactly the worst thing you are ever going to see, but neither is this game horrendous to look at either. Things do look like what they should represent, but when compared to other games out there, this game looks like it is almost a gen behind in looks. You can tell they were trying to go with modern graphics at the time, at least for cheapo Wii standards, but it just doesn’t seem like they really pushed themselves here. When there are other games like this made by Nintendo and Sega that look a lot better with a similar format, yeah, you know they could have done better.
Sound
Okay, there is nothing inherently wrong with the sound, but there is just no variety at all to the sound of this game. There is are very few tracks in this game, and you are going to hear those few tracks over and over and over again as you play these mini games. Okay look, I know we aren’t trying to make this the best game ever, but you can at least add some music and sound effect variety to your game. You don’t have to get so cheap that you recycle the same tune over and over again. This isn’t the NES era where it could have been more understandable. These are large disks with plenty of room for more music on them. At least give your game a chance when it comes to the music department. Again, the music isn’t horrible in this game, but there is just an extreme lack of it, that the music gets a bit old very fast, seeing as the music available isn’t the most wonderful tracks in the world either.
Control
Actually, most of the games control fairly well. They aren’t perfect by any means, but when you see how some of the other parts of this game seem to be lacking, I’m surprised that the controls in several of the mini games are actually on the competent side. There is of course that sameness that comes with several of the mini games using the same controls over and over again, but hey, at least for the most part they made the controls actually work properly. That’s more than I can say for some games. There are a few frustrating games here and there, but most of the games they actually did make simple enough to where one or two screens of instructions is all you needed to play most of them. I can get behind simple that’s for sure In a game like this, that is more than likely developed for a younger or more casual audience, simple is likely a good thing. So yes, the controls aren’t bad, but they aren’t perfect either. At least they did something sort of right with this game. I can’t say that for the next area I’m going to have to talk about though. That is where some of the worst parts of this game are about to appear to you.
Replay Value
Yeah, the replay value of this game. Unless you have a family that enjoys this game and wants to use it as a family game night as I mentioned above, the replay value of this game is pretty low. Once you have played most of the games, you pretty much have played this game for what it has to offer. This is one of those games you play once, maybe twice and then likely aren’t going to play it much anymore. The only way I can see this having any lasting appeal would be in multiplayer with other people. There might be some replayability if you have kids that enjoy this game, but everyone else, I can see them shelving this pretty quickly. Literally, I played this game for only like two hours and not only had I played most of the games it had to offer, I was getting bored with it pretty quickly. This isn’t a game like Mario Party or Mario & Sonic Olympics where there are reasons to play the mini games, and a general sense of fun that come with them. This game is just honestly a bit on the dull side. Not only that, playing the mini games is all you do. There is nothing else to this game. There are no extra modes or anything to change up the game to make the mini games hold your interest for a longer period of time. You play the game a few times, and you have played them all, with nothing really new to be offered. There are some collectables you can purchase in this game, but really, they are just outfits to decorate your character. Unless you like dressing up your in game avatar, even the collectables aren’t even that interesting. If it wasn’t for this game having some multiplayer functions to play with others or your kids, this game would take a massive hit here, even more so than it already is. There is just no appeal to play this game other than once.
Overall, I wouldn’t say that the Guinness World Records video game is the worst game I’ve ever played by any means, but neither is it really that interesting either. This game just is just a bit on the dull side and honestly, there is just no lasting appeal whatsoever to this game. Really, unless you just enjoy games that are based around mini games, I don’t see many people wanting this game. This would make a decent family game night game, but that is about it. For most people, I would say pass, that is unless just want something quick and easy to play with your family. Everyone else, just let this one go I would say.
Overall, in my opinion at least, I give Guinness World Records the Video Game a five out of ten.
