As for ghetto? My family lived in this stupidly designed, leaky shack that my old man tried to renovate with stuff he got from dumpsters. "Dumpster diving" the only "stigma" I didn't receive was, I could enter certain "high class" neighborhoods, with minimal issue from the police. My clothing was patched, or had huge holes in them, so I was treated as a vagrant.

My meals were coming from dumpsters. I stayed inside and got paler because if I went outside, my neighbors would threaten to sick their dogs on me. Or I might have gotten shot by a local drive by. Holy crap...I didn't need to see this first thing in the morning

Bernie Sanders is treated as a fringe figure, but he is truly the only serious presidential candidate in the race. He's the only one with a decent vision for the country, and his record indicates that he would follow though if elected.

It's probably because Sanders' comment hits home in a more personal way with Alex than Trump's blatherings. I think Sanders' idiotic social justice rhetoric which is symptomatic and representative of the larger regressive left movement is precisely why (and perhaps only why) someone like Trump is doing as well as he is. There are a lot of angry white people and others who are tired of the constant demonization of "privileged" majorities.

John McCain wasn't labeled racist, and he was running against Obama. He lost his election partially because he promised more failed Bush-era policy, and partially because he chose a quack-job as his running mate. I didn't vote for him because he wanted to nonsensically bomb Iran while we were already in two simultaneous wars that we were obviously failing to pay for.

Mitt Romney was not labeled racist, and he too was running against Obama. His problem was that he could not disguise the fact that he was a sleazebag well enough. I didn't vote for him because he was caught red-handed, on national television, condescending Americans belonging to certain income brackets. I seem to recall there also being scandals involving businesses he owned, but may be mistaken; scandals are a dime a dozen in Washington these days.

What makes Trump different from either of these past Republican candidates is that he has indeed, been openly racist, multiple times, against Mexicans and Muslims in particular. He has demonstrated even less of a brain/mouth filter than Romney, and it could be well argued that that problem was what cost him his election. Somehow, it is more acceptable when Trump says crap because he isn't being two-faced about it (like Romney) and throwing it all out in the open...and also because for the most part, he is being racist against groups of people that are seen as non-American. So you have those caveats...but I'm not sure if they are enough to override the fact that some of the shit he's said is unbecoming of a man vying for the highest office in the land...to say the least.

You are not wrong about the Democratic strategy though. While I don't know what Hillary is doing, if anything, to court minority votes, Mr. Sanders is definitely taking a decidedly social justice bent in his approach to politics. You summed it up pretty succiently.
