High-Res Files on Itchio!
💜 Thank you all of those who give their support. 💜
Computer, would you please stop being a jerk. Thank you.
Seriously, I've spent probably a few weeks worth of time, at least, trying to do my piece for the Pinup folio. Working on fur textures and all kinds of extra time and detail into it, so i could do something Im proud of to stand along side all the wonderful artists participating. I've been hermitting myself away and be antisocal and everything, just to work hard on it....
I was probably a few hours from finishing it, just getting the last of the fur texture in before moving it from SAI over to Photoshop. I hit save, and then my computer crashes.
Some how some other files were eaten up in the crash, as they just disappeared.. but worst of all. The file Ive been working so hard on for weeks is gone.. now reduced to a pointless corrupted file that onlyshows as a layerless abstract piece of nonsense.
I'm just upset about it. I feel like all these weeks were wasted. Why? because I didnt keep proper back ups :/ Goddommot!
Aw well, back to working on badges and creature art for work.
PS. To all thsoe who have sent me notes, I'll try to get back to you soon, things have just been really hectic for me as of late. A lot of things to deal with so I've just not been keeping up with FA like I used to. My apologies ^^;

Back up your corrupted file before you use it though, just in case.
Just some weeks left *beeps and nuzzles you* ^_^
3 weeks! *omg happy*
Don't take this the wrong way too...Think of losing that big pic...as something to help increase ur art EXP! Hope everything works out
it's horrible =/
Always save your work with a new filename, by adding a dash, for example. This way, if the PC crashes while saving, the original file won't be damaged, just the newest version. Also - If all files in a folder "disappear" they can very likely be recovered since probably just the FAT was damaged, not the files themselves.
Long shot, but try this:

Do not save/install the program to the hard drive you are recovering from because you could damage your missing files further.
Which is actually better when it comes to repairing the FS. just chkdsk /f.
Also, a larger number of files "going missing" after a crash like that is more reminiscent of a FAT problem, but I suppose it's better to not jump to conclusions.
In case UV does not have a separate HD, these versions can be installed onto a USB stick. I cannot vouch for them, however:

Or this may be useful:

also, XP only runs on NTFS if you upgraded from a previous version of Windows, and failed to convert your filesystem in the process. In other words: it shouldn't happen. NTFS has far more benefits.
Also I've seen NTFS files go missing on many occasions to to improper dismounts, especially computers transitioning from sleep to off without waking up due to power failure or battery depletion, or drives being removed from a system while the system was still running.
You're on a budget I know, so might I suggest using an online backup service, Mozy. They have a free version, with up to 2 GB of storage space, which should at least cover projects you're currently working on.

And as to XP, this applies to all computers and all operating systems (you too Mac folks!). Life happens, have backups.
It's really sad that this file is gone completely. :( I hope it won't take too much time to redo the picture. If you need any help: Feel free to ask me at any time.
I don't recommend the online backup approach, because you're at the mercy of the servers, especially with free versions of anything. I've lost very important files that way.
First step, if you say a lot of other stuff is also missing, you can possibly get it back by running a checkdisk scan. Just Start>Run and type chkdsk C: /f /x then reboot your computer. If it repairs the filesystem, it may recover some files. If you don't have other copies of the file that was corrupted during saving, however, it's most likely lost... why I keep multiple copies of every file these days. :/
External hard drives, flash drives, too, are good for backing up a few important things... but even saving a few versions of it can help when software goes apeshit like that.
Depending on the software you were using, there may be temporary copies of the file, or previous revisions, saved on your disk, still. However, it can be a bitch to retrieve them. I recommend the EasyRecovery software from OnTrack, if you can get it... otherwise it's still possible to have it recovered professionally, if it's worth enough to you... though you're going to pay at least $300 for someone to do it professionally (trust me, I work in the industry... and that's a best-case; we're likely the lowest in the state, and we charge about that).
ive had comps do that ...and it enraged me i got so pissed i managed to put my keyboard through my monitor...wich was quite a feat
but i think you can recover the last auto save not sure how but i think you can
It is imparative that if files are missing that you intend to recover, you do not delete, save, or modify any more data on that hard drive than is absolutely necessary. Files that are written to the drive while moving or saving may overwrite the deleted revisions of the files you're after, making them impossible to recover.
If you want any help or suggestions, feel free to ask. I'm generally hard to reach, but you can note me here.
Other than that, I can only advise you close what ever program you are useing often enough that it doesnt begin to use up too much in the way of what your system has to work with, over loading it with trying to stream info back to the hard drive when the system is taxed can cause a fail too. Doing this will also keep you with decently recent copies of your work too. Dont over wright the old copy tho, keep at least two backwards copies on hand for this sort of thing.
I learned from CS3. It's not actually done saving when it says that it is.
Sorry to hear about that. I think that has to be one of my biggest fears. A friend started backing up her work nightly using an external harddrive, a little costly, but if your serious about your art making you profit, then they are highly recommended.

They are pretty pricey, but in the long run worth the safety of your data. If you have the money that is.
Ive taken to getting a portable HDD since, that, or a USB drive would be good to backup your data to an actual different place, physically. it does make you feel a lot safer ^^;
I work at IT job and I have quite much leftover PC-stuff, which is in good, working condition, but I don't need them myself.
If I would live a little closer to you, I could fix you a new workstation with real-time backups (the data is backed up the moment something new is saved).
Damn engineers, come up with the working teleport already!
All I can do now is send you some virtual hugs and nuzzles (I would so rather give them to you in person) ;^..^
