It's really wonderful! As a Oriental furry in doctoral program in Sociology and Ethics, I feel there's little interest in furry research around me and more things I can and should do remain. I wish I'll join in or operate this kind of collaborative research someday :)

Yeah, graphics don't translate well, but PDF is horrendously limited to high power consumption devices that don't make for comfortable reading (since all of mine are either far too large or far too small, but my kindle is just right).

I've downloaded for later reading, but a quick scan through... yeah, .mobi would be difficult. And it's very, very scientific. Those without the background knowledge to know the science framing what you're discussing will be lost without a compass. I'll still read it anyway of course.

I can't help but sigh at the stuff about bronies causing issues with the fandom and with it being too open/accepting. When I first started hanging out in it that was part of the whole reason why it was so special. I feel like the more mainstream it goes the less accepting it is and the more like every other oppressive group it becomes.

I haven't read the linked book yet, but I just wanted to throw out a thought on your last sentence. The trend towards our group being less accepting is likely due to the influx of people from it going kinda mainstream - and I have a feeling the trend will reverse after 'being furry' goes from the newest, coolest way to be different to being yesterdays news (aka, the wagon leaves us behind). Then it should go back towards the accepting group of interesting people it used to be, or at least lose some of that perceived lack of acceptance you describe.

That said, I still use the word 'tolerant' for a one word description of the fandom when asked. ;)

There are plenty of points in the pfd where it points out there are still things to study. I think that as long as there are reasons the study humans there will always be reasons to study the ones that go furry.

Cool. I figured that they'd still keep studying, but since it's proper academic research it relies on the grants, and I was just making sure that their grants hadn't run their course and this was the final publishing. It's sad to me that it's been so long since I've seen any of them - I'd like to consider them friends, but I've been unable to go to any of the cons they frequent to catch up lately. As long as they keep going, I'll find Nuka and bunch eventually. :)

Absolutely! Don't worry - I don't have ANY intention of stopping the research anytime soon! Every time we "answer" a question, two more questions seem to pop up in their place! More than ever, we run into the problem of having TOO MANY things to study on any one survey, and have to try and cut down from 400+ questions to just 200 :) Our grant money has run its course, but it's worth noting that we did our initial research without grant money, and have continued to do our research without it (in this case, we pay for things like printing, travel, hotels, etc... out of our own pockets, because it's something we really believe in!)

The publication was actually a total accident ^^; I was trying to clean up our research website and improve its readability. I did this by copy + pasting all of the findings into a word document and organizing them all by topic. By the time I was done cleaning up and organizing the data, I realized that with just a little bit of editing and cleaning up, it was basically the makings of a reference book about furries :) It's not a sign at all of us being done or anything - quite the opposite. We're just taking stock of the past 5 years, seeing where we've come, and using it to figure out where to go next!

As for seeing you - indeed, I definitely consider you to be a friend, and hope to see you soon at an upcoming con :3

Ok, I'm exceptionally confused. how can you have a "Non-specified" pokemon fursona? and how is that different than "Other"? Or is the "Non-Specified" because some of the surveys didn't specify which species of pokemon?

I don't think they specified which kind just whether or not you had one or not.

"Non-Specified" means the participant didn't actually specify a particular species of Pokemon (they literally just said the word "Pokemon"). In contrast, "Other" means they wrote in a particular Pokemon fursona species, but too few people gave the same fursona (and, by ethical rules, we're not allowed to present "single" cases, as it may inadvertently "out" someone as a participant in our study). :) Hopefully that clears it up!
