"The Jet Gamer" Game Review: Wii Play
Cheapo Wii game again.
Wii Play
This is a generic Wii game that is part of the main Wii game library. I’m sure you have seen several games that start with Wii something. Wii Play is one of those games. Being that this game is normally a dollar, is there a reason for that now? I heard that this game likely originally came with a wiimote, but now all you find is just the game. Is this game even worth it? Let us check it out and find out shall we?
Gameplay
The basic gameplay of Wii Play is that you have nine short mini games that are more or less meant to teach you how to use the Wiimotes by showing you various actions that you can do with them. The majority of the games are very simple, like picking out matching Mii’s, or shooting targets as they appear. There are more complex games though, such as a Pool game and a Tank game, which are likely the most fun games in the bunch. Yeah, you heard me, other than those two games, most of the other games are just average or just not very memorable quick mini games. That’s all this game is. It is nine simple mini games and nothing more. You have one game that is a fishing game, where all you do is lower the Wiimote down to put the rod into the water and you try and catch fish to earn points. That’s it. There is an air hockey minigame which is alright, but that’s all it is. It is basically pong, and even then there is a ping pong game that is nothing but doing volley’s as many times as you can. Yeah, not impressed with this either. None of these games that are offered are really bad, but it is just nothing is impressive at all. These are all games you either play once and you are done with, or if you have a few friends you can compete for high scores. I’m just surprised this originally was a game you paid a lot more for to begin with. If it originally game with a Wiimote as I read it did, then I guess this would make sense as to why people would by this game. On its own though, unless you find it for a dollar like I did, I wouldn’t likely get this. Now if you have a few friends you want to compete against or a small family of kids that want to compete for a high score then you got an alright game here. It is just, this game is nothing impressive overall. It isn’t bad, but the fun factor is a bit low, unless you have someone to play with.
Story
Not applicable, as this is a party game.
Graphics
There is nothing really impressive here at all. Most of the time game is either looking at the basic game you expect when you see a pool table, a ping pong table or an air hockey table. Even then, you see only your Mii’s in a few games where you have to pick them out, and even the fish game is not really impressive. The tank game looks okay, though it is your generic tank game you would have seen back in the Atari days, just with better looks of course. Nothing really looks bad again here, but nothing impressive at all. Average Average Average. I don’t know much else to say other than things are just so average and non-impressive without being bad at the same time.
Sound
The bulk of the game is just generic elevator type music with some sound effects to back up what you are doing. You know it is rather sad that they didn’t even put more effort into the music in this game when the game is so short and not even offering much other than trying to teach you how to use a Wiimote with random minigames. The sounds are just so minimalistic that you barely notice them. They aren’t bad again, but I have to take some points off for the fact that the music is almost to the point that you don’t even know it is there. When you do notice it, it is just ignorable. Snore!
Control
Seeing as this game is meant to be a Wiimote teaching tool for how to control the Wiimote, at least they did a good job of that. It really does show you the basics of what certain games are like when you are using certain motions to play those games. Certain games are about pointing, and it does that alright. Others are about smacking a ball around and it does that well. Really, I do have to say, if you are going to make a game about a teaching how to use the Wiimote with minigames, they did an alright job with it. Some of the games are still a bit on the simple side, but for the most part, these games do their jobs well. The ones that tilt can still get off a bit, as tends to happen with Wiigames when you revolve some motions about tilting here and there, but still, even those games work for the most part. You just may have to tilt the controller a little more than you expect for it to work the way you want it to. So yeah, the controls at least aren’t the worst in the world, which is saying something when so many Wii games fall victim to crappy motion controls.
Replay Value
While the game is just average at best, I do have to say it does lack replayability for some of the obvious reasons I’ve mentioned before. Seeing as this is mostly a Wiimote teaching tool, and the fact there are only nine simple games in this game, you are going to be finished with it in no time at all. I think I had about an hour of play time out of it before I was bored with it and had all I had wanted out of it. You can now try and get better scores to earn medals in the game, but that is only if you are motivated by high scores to keep playing. As I said as well, if you have others to play with, or you have a small family, I can see them playing this a few times, as this game can be used as a quick competitive tool. Other than that though, the game is over with in no time at all, so you are going to feel ripped off if you pay more than a dollar or two for this game, as that is really all that it is worth. The fun factor just isn’t there, or what fun is there is over in the blink of an eye. There is just really no need to come back to this game unless you just want a quick competitive game night with family or friends that aren’t big gamers. Real gamers aren’t going to be impressed with this at all. The casual gamers or small families are the ones that this is more for, aka the people that don’t play games much at all.
Overall, I’m not very impressed with Wii Play. While the concept isn’t the worst by any means, the delivery is just not done in the best way. I can understand why you want a game that teaches new players all about motion controls, but Wii Sports did this in a better way, and in a way where people would want to keep coming back for more. This isn’t that same kind of game by any means. The game is just too short and uninteresting to be any more than just a quick novelty for the kids or the non-gaming family to play. Everyone else, I would say just pass on this game. It really isn’t that great. I would expect more out of the games if they are only going to include nine games in it. The nine games included are just too quick and simple and not very impressive other than one or two of them. Everyone else should just let this one slide.
Overall, in my opinion at least, I give Wii Play a five point five out of ten.
