Thoughts on top games 2016[PC] - Oxenfree [5/7]

Day 5 of looking at my most memorable games of 2016 (that I played through Steam).

Oxenfree
It’s difficult to pinpoint why this game stuck with me. The characters aren’t particularly memorable for me and the game is mechanically simple. However the music and dialogue and overarching narrative create such a strong atmosphere that even though I’ve only played it once and haven’t booted the game up again, I still remember the creepy abandoned house and the way game’s haunts make you question your own sense of agency while trying to stop a mysterious force from terrorizing you and your friends.
All the puzzles in Oxenfree have to do with environmental traversal or tuning a radio you’re holding to the correct frequency. The rest of the game is simply talking to the characters in real-time conversations using three buttons. This leaves you free to walk around and explore while talking to the characters, and the smart dialogue system allows you to interrupt people to bring up different topics and when that line of query is finished, the voice acting gracefully returns to the previous topic. It’s well done enough that if you’re not paying attention you might not even notice that’s what’s happening.
Please share your thoughts in the comments below and if there's a game that was really memorable for you this year, please make a journal and link it in the comments so I can give it a read!
