-Movie Recommendation- Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
16 years ago
Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason LivesTommy Jarvis, who took care of serial killer Jason Voorhees as a child, has returned to where it all began. Back at Crystal Lake (now called Forrest Green in an effort to forget the past), he wants to be sure that Jason is rotting in Hell once and for all. But when he inadvertently brings Mr. Voorhees back to life, he's got to try and warn everyone and figure out a way to stop the masked terror before his bloody rampage takes out everyone in a 5 mile radius.
Who doesn't love a good 80s slasher movie? Inventive and memorable kills (done on irritating and poorly dressed teens), a badass killer, lots of blood, and plenty of humor (intentional or otherwise). They're true guilty pleasures, movies that you and a group can have fun with. And this is easily the best entry in one of the best slasher franchises ever (don't worry if you haven't seen the others, continuity is not a big issue in this neck of the woods)
Jason Voorhees... the man, the legend, and now, the zombie. This is Jason's first outing as an undead superbeing (as opposed to a regular superbeing), and he goes the full nine yards. There's a load of interesting and cool kills, from someone being bent over backwards to a triple decapitation. Blood and limbs fly everywhere, and it's just awesome to watch. And all the while, he looks damn good doing it (the man behind the mask, C.J. Graham, was only Jason for this one. Which is too bad, as he's my favorite one). The rest of the cast is your usual bunch of slasher movie deadites, though at least some of them act sensible to be remotely likable (that's big for a movie like this).
The humor in this entry is also pretty good. Usually in movies like this most of the laughs come from how stupid someone acts/looks, or corny dialogue that the fast forward button was invented for. But here, writer/director Tom McLoughlin has created something that tiptoes the line between good humor and accidental parody quite well. Everyone in it knows what they're in, and they do their parts well. Several jokes are written in that are quite good ("I've seen enough horror movies to know any weirdo wearing a mask is never friendly."). This is a slasher movie that knows what a slasher movie should be like, and as such feels like a movie of genuine quality.
Naturally, this movie does have some slightly limited appeal. There's plenty of folks out there who don't care for kill-a-minute outings like this. But for the horror fans out there (or really, the action fans, since this is just a really bloody action movie at it's core), this is one that's definitely up there in pure entertainment value.
Oh, and yes, Jason is the best Slasher ever. He wiped the floor with Freddy (annoying winks aside), and could take on Michael Myers and Harry Warden, no problem 8)

Jason can beat Freddy yes, but only in the real world. As you could see when Freddy was in his world Jason couldn't stand up even let alone hurt Freddy. But maybe its just because I enjoy the Nightmare on Elm street movies more, either way they are both up there and in dream world freddy wins, and real world, jason wins. Because lets face it, Freddy sucks in the real world >.>
Anyway, in the dreamworld Freddy is king, but I'm talking more the real world. Which seems much tougher in my mind (as opposed to doing things in a place where you're in control of every little thing), and thus, gives Jason that edge. And he doesn't need to pop quips every time he kills someone: stony silence, that's his game.
But I prefer the comedy before each killing, it gives a small laugh to see the humorous ways he plans each death.
And yeah, I do give Freddy props for creativity in his kills. He's got more to work with, so it's good he takes advantage of everything.
And hey, it's a slasher franchise. Everyone one of them has a few less-than-stellar entries (I've always believed Part II was the worst Friday, being so annoyingly dull and with bunbling, stupid Jason).
1. The horny farmer with the playboy, made me gag.
2. The lead character. He was good in supernatural but in this it didn't seem like the right fit.
3. The sudden death of the female friend at the end. >.>
It was good in three aspects.
1. The funny asian kid. He made me laugh.
2. The fact that it wasn't a remake but that it fit in with the story line, I think like right before the third movie possibly.
3. the deaths were pretty decent.
Overall parts were annoying, especially the scene with the sex and the video camera. The only time sex should be allowed in horror films should be when they die in the middle.
The big mark against the new one is Jason taking a prisoner. That shit just doesn't fly, to be blunt.
And the point is, the annoying ones still die (Jason gets to them as fast as he can). Also, the sudden death at the end hardly seems like a bad point (keeps ya on your toes).
But I will say overall I'd give it a b-. Because it still doesn't compare to the original friday the 13th :3
