"Love Stinks" setting and character bios

There was a request in the "Love Stinks" Q&A thread for bios on all six of the characters in the series. As I prepared my response, I realized it might be useful to put that information, along with some general background on the setting of the stories, in its own separate thread. Ternura and I will post background information here, but feel free to ask questions -- either here or in the Q&A thread, which can be found in the previous journal here.
“Love Stinks” is set on an alternate Earth. Convergent evolution has caused certain non-primate mammals to evolve into near-human form. They still retain some animalistic features, such as tails and ears, and so are considered Half human by the ‘pure’ humans descended from primates – Halves, for short. No one knows why this convergent evolution happened; it is the subject of much debate and wild speculation, but very little fact.
Halves have been second-class citizens throughout history, and are only now going through their own species rights movement. There has been enough progress to get a Half elected to the U.S. Senate, but there is still a lot of prejudice in society. There are still struggles over legal rights, and Halves have been the subjects of various medical experiments. Some of those experiments have been benign, such as inquiries into their evolutionary mystery, and some less so – such as drug testing.
California is one of the more progressive states for Halves’ rights, and Nick and the girls attend the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Nick met Ternura and Kusai when Ternura needed a tutor to overcome some of the shortcomings in her education, which is common among Halves because their educational opportunities are often more limited than those of their non-Half peers.

Nick is a quintessential nerd. He is a graduate student in astrophysics, and between the night-oriented focus of his work and his natural introversion, he has a very limited social circle. He has completed his coursework, which has removed even that level of structured interaction with other students, and work on his dissertation keeps him in the lab during peak social hours. He works primarily with the Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico, which he can access remotely from computers in the astrophysics lab at UCSD.
Nick has been fascinated with skunks since he was very young, and the scent of skunk on the night breeze has always turned him on. He had never been sprayed before meeting Ternura and Kusai, but he had always been curious what it would be like. His fascination with skunks led him to a general ass fixation, and he finds women’s farts to be arousing largely because of the parallels with skunk spray. He is not attracted to other men at all, so he was thrilled when he met his first skunk girl through his tutoring efforts.

Bio: Raised by her mother, this Spotty Half was taught first hand how to gain the utmost accuracy with her shots. Despite her almost superhuman accuracy, she has trouble with her eyesight, being nearsighted in her left eye and farsighted in her right. Because of this, she tends to wear glasses when alone so she can get a feel for the world around her, but doesn't need them when with a group, relying on their actions and cues to assist her. Due to a tragic event in her past, her life was torn from her hands and thrown out the window of opportunity. She never truly recovered from this incident, relapsing at times into a state of deep depression, but overall considers it a blessing in disguise. Without it's occurance, she would never have met her lifelong partner and daughter, nor her newfound friends and Nick, and she is ever so grateful because of it.

Bio: The older of the two sisters, Ternura adores her Skunk Half nature, and loves even more how well she flaunts it. Whether it's to protect her sibling, or to turn Nick on furiously, she never missed a chance to whip out her weaponry. Her tall body and hourglass shape, complete with moderately sized breasts and rounded bottom, drew loads of attention from unwary people, and she usually made her disguise complete by dying the stripes in her hair and tail. Though she loved her Half side, she hated how so many people saught to harm her and her sister. The first human to ever truly love her for her Half was Nick, and she will never let him wander. Always ready to play, Ternura learned quickly how to make a game out of almost any situation she found herself in. Feeling lucky?

Bio: Small and crazy, this hyper ginger was raised in the wilds, all the while being taught everything she could learn by her two mothers. Being a pure Half, she learned very quickly how to use her Half to her advantage, even when it was unneeded. Her cocky attitude has a dark side, however, in that she can never sit still. She is always mischievious and looking for a new way to get into trouble, even if her Attention Deficit Disorder sidetracks her at times. One thing she will never lose focus on, it seems, is her love of her family, new friends, and Nick.

Bios: Always willing to lend a hand, this young and beautiful girl was learning everything she could to make a name for herself. She never was one to sit on the sidelines, and always went for the gold, be it physically or academically. However, her dreams were cut short by a most tragic event, reshaping her life forever. Her body was altered, her spirit was shattered, and now she wants nothing more then to use her newfound strength and height to help her new family grow and thrive, promising to never let them go.

Bio: Born second into a familtly of Halves, Kusai was raised to embrace her animalistic heritage. Though her father didn't much approve of either sibling stinking up the household, Kusai wasn't properly taught how to use her Skunk Half gift, and thus couldn't spray. She was never a big fan of her body type, being wide and plump in physique, as it constantly gave her unwanted attention in the form of bullies and various other Anti-Half individuals. Ternura would always step in to protect her, but this only made Kusai hate herself further. She drove herself into an almost permenant silence, until the day she met Nick. She instantly fell in love with him, yet kept it all a secret until one fateful night...
