HELP. Venezuela violence erupting. Artists in danger.
Let's just get right to it. I have friends who live in Venezuela.
These friends are
Nedoiko and
Castbound. You may recognize their art. But right now, they are scared. And rightfully so.
Right now, Venezuela is truly a Hell on Earth. I thought things were bad a year ago. Things are even worse now. Years ago, a socialist revolution took place. And as charismatic socialist regimes are wont to do, power was eventually transferred to a successor who spent the ENTIRE surplus of the country, silenced and imprisoned dissenters and political opponents, and bled and starved the country into obedience.
Or so he tried.
Right now, there are violent protests happening in Venezuela. Protests that have been going non-stop for over two months. After only two months, the body count is over 60, and the injury count is over 2000. A murder every day. Thousands of protestors have been beaten savagely and imprisoned. Change needs to happen there, and in order to do that, the protesters must be supported. It's very bad down there. So bad that people would rather die in protests than continue to go hungry and suffer.
Elderly people are rooting through garbage bags looking for scraps of food to feed their families. They're searching for food in the same place they find soiled diapers. A food truck was looted within SECONDS of breaking down.
Women are sterilizing themselves and using coat hangers in mass numbers to prevent the suffering of children in a world gone mad.
People have barricaded themselves inside their homes, scared to come out because of the truly staggering rate of violent crime.
Children are fainting in school because of malnutrition. A 7-year old boy doesn't even know what MILK is.
The leader of the Opposition had his valid passport stolen by Venezuelan soldiers to prevent him from appealing to the U.N.
Crime is rampant, the only business that's booming is kidnapping and drug dealing. It's like Mad Max down there, but without any of the fun.
The current president, Nicolas Maduro, has enlisted the help of local thugs (called "Colectivos") to commit murders and acts of violence on his behalf, so he can deny any involvement on his part.
Maduro has also blocked off the borders, preventing people from seeking aid or telling other countries of the realities there. He won't even allow charities in, forcing them to go through illegal channels to help those in need. He won't allow bandages, antibiotics, or wound treatment through the border, because he doesn't want them used to treat protester injuries.
Children weep and twitch and DIE in unbearable agony on the floors of hospitals that have no beds or medicine to treat them, not even aspirin.
This is what a Venezuelan hospital looks like. https://static01.nyt.com/images/201.....mbo1600-v6.jpg
And throughout all this absurd abuse of power, Maduro claims that his supporters, who are living like KINGS in MANSIONS outside of the country, are being oppressed as though they are "The Jews of the 21st Century." Yes, he actually said that. And anybody who disagrees... disappears. He ALSO says that everyone who is protesting against the government is a TERRORIST and will be treated as one.
There is NO free speech in Venezuela anymore. Only brutality and repression.... and it must STOP.
Do you want to see it for yourself? Here are two videos that show the truly HIDEOUS reality.

And just a couple months ago, people decided they have had enough.
Well you know what? So have I.
Every time I ask my friends how they're doing, it's always terrible news. Family members starving, scared to leave the house... I have friends there who have passports waiting for them, but they can't get them because their chances of being assaulted on the way are pretty much 100%.
They have NOTHING down there. Nobody can even get a piece of candy, or antibiotics to treat the most basic of infections. They don't have potatoes to make fries at McDonalds, where you can get an individual meal for a whole month's pay. It cost me $200 to send a $50 gift to a friend down there. I'm drinking a coke right now, and I feel guilty about it. I'm living in luxury while they suffer. I want some good news.
Well... there IS some good news, in that people around the world, against all hope, are finally starting to NOTICE what's happening down there.
I've done extensive research on how to help, and after consulting with multiple sources and conferring with my venezuelan sources, I found this:
That woman is a Venezuelan immigrant who escaped before things got this bad. Her uncle is currently being held prisoner by Maduro's regime. So yes. This is legit.
If anyone has any money to spare.... even if it means lowering your pledge on my patreon, I highly urge you to donate to one of the charities below.
(I personally chose "Feed the Protest," since getting rid of Maduro is by far the most important thing right now.)

I personally would prefer that my friends NOT get killed down there, or suffer unjustly. So... please consider supporting these charities, and/or writing to your elected representative.
That's all.

You can buy an APPLE after working for a full week.
If even ONE person donates after seeing this journal, I'll be happy. ;v;
Holy shit.
I'm going to do some more reading as well once I get home tonight and see about tossing my little contribution into trying to help this mess.
I'd do what I can to help if they had to move as refugees, but I have no connections whatsoever so they'd have to move on their own, IF their lives were endangered to such extreme levels anyways.
What can I tell you, look at my FA, I don't even get commissions and I've been in the fandom for over 15 years.
Wish I could do something.

We feel for our brothers in Venezuela, we are close at home with them, A lovely artist that is doing commissions for me right now lives there.
And believe me, we will keep pushing on, what you are doing is just as important and I thank you from the heart for it, we need America to pull some chains here, sorely.
:c as a Venezuelan I'm just really pessimistic about the whole thing.
