I have a really sad event to report to you all here. Some of you know from Twitter but I want to cross post since it has consumed me.
Last night at Apx 8:30pm our dog had gotten out due to being scared of fireworks. She was then shot by a neighbor and found collapsed and bleeding to death 2 houses down from ours. She was rushed to an animal care center and the bleeding was stopped.
We didnt know where she was all night after looking and had just found out this morning that she had been taken. We called in to try to pick her up and were given 2 options. They could put her down on the spot or rush her to an emergency vet to be prepared for possible surgery to remove the bullet. Tofu is the closest thing I have to a daughter to of course there was no question. She is now at the emergency vet clinic where she will be kept stable by staff till the surgeon can get to the office tomorrow morning.
Some details on where she was shot and how we know. X-rays revealed that the bullet entered her skin on the left side of her chest went through a rib then stopped half way to the other side. We have a witness to her being shot that said that she was not making any aggressive body movements before being shot. She was in fact just calling her over for pets to see if she was ok just before a man came out and shot at her with what we think was a high powered BB gun. Just based on the bullet shape via X-ray.
After taking care of Tofu at the vet I went over to speak with the women who told us she had been shot at and showed her a photo to confirm it was in fact Tofu. She confirmed and pointed me over to the mans house who shot her. When I went over to his home he denied shooting her and even said that he does not own a gun.
At this time we are gathering all info to file a full police report and get to the bottom of things. Since we have a witness as well as several people who know her to be a very friendly dog I am sure we will at least get some form of justice for her pain and suffering.
At this time the vet bills are piling up and she has not even gone to surgery yet. I will be making a go fund me after she is 100% back from the vet in case anyone would like to help to getting her back on her feet. As of right now I fronted the entire thing on my credit card so that she could get the care she needed.

My chihuahua is coming to old age, and I dread the day she starts act it. She's still a puppy in my eyes. Even with all her gray hairs.

I really wish there was an animal abuse registry. I know some cities in various states have adopted that, but it needs to be more wipespread.
It will be filed under animal abuse and it is taken very seriously.

What a fucking asshole. Who the fuck decides to just shoot an innocent and placid dog for literally no fucking reason??

If it can be proven that he was under the influence, you might have an even better foot to stand on, because you can argue the issue that it could even have been a child that could've been at risk of getting in the way of that bullet and that he is clearly careless and dangerous to those around him.
As far as him being drunk I will have to get more details from the witness. Since it was a holiday she was leaving to go out with her husband when I approached her. So I didnt want to keep her. In any case the vet confirmed on an official report that it was a gunshot to the chest.
Police are even actively encouraged to avoid considering people complaining about animal cruelty with their pets being killed a crime.
It happened with my family, in which multiple of our cats in the past were killed by locals people.
They killed them because God told them to in the 'bible'. That cats serve Satan and must be killed.
The local police refused to intervene because they deemed in a public dispute with no criminal activity.
As the police said, "Animals have no rights, freedoms, feelings, or souls, so its not like people stealing cats from your property to kill them is a crime."
Sadly, my father, a police lieutenant, and my father's father, a police chief, says that most police are lawless criminal scum and to be expected to never help us.
Anyways, if police refuse to intervene, you can always rely on rallying the local community to help and support your family.
They may even help you get justice. It's the only way justice ever happens here in the USA, where murder, rape, robbery, is considered 'normal'.
I honestly hope Tofu gets better. I honestly hope this man will never shoot another person's pet again. I honestly hope you get justice.
These things are tragedies that are horrible and shouldn't happen.
I hope he gets done.
