The Return of the Newsletter [Week 42]
Welcome to the forty-second edition of the Fortnightly Furry Musicians Newsletter! This time available in notification boxes throughout the land!
The article you’re about to read was written for last issue, however at the last minuet I wrote something new for the big LANDR story, which many of you may not have read due to a small notifications mishap last time out. If that applies to you, here’s a link to that.
In this newsletter, we’re going to go a little bit… Top Gear…
Being as much a car racing fan as a musician, I’m currently working through a selection of covers of music from ESPN’s Speedworld and I’m posed with an interesting problem. Covering a song when you have no idea who wrote it. This, of course, brings the question, “Is there a particular precedent of how to credit a song when you don’t know who wrote it?”
So, I looked into it. And well… I have no clue.
The problem you have is, to release a cover song by full legality nature, you need a license, and you have to get that licence from the person who made it. Problem is, I have no clue what even the name of the songs I have in question are, they’re just little jingles and pieces. The motor race itself doesn’t show who wrote all the music they used in the credits either… so it’s a bit of a mystery. At the end of the day, a few nifty faucets of the internet are going to allow me to actually make and assemble this. But as far as say… publishing it on something like Spotify, I wouldn’t be able to do it, I don’t think.
Another faucet to the covers I’m doing is I have no idea what the notes in the song are, it’s just a game of “match the things” in FL and laying out instruments similar in the same places. So if I mess up enough of the interpretation, is that even classified as a cover? I’d argue that indeed, it still is, but it’s an interesting point. And then again, how does this apply to remixes and things? Copywrite law… it’s a doozy.
Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey… Hey Averts…

FoxAmoore,
PepperCoyote, and
hali (aka Matthew Ebel).
hali is performing the “Piano Dance Pop” show on Friday the 25th at 10PM, and
FoxAmoore and
PepperCoyote will be doing two shows on Satarday the 26th, the first being at 4PM with
hali as a special guest, and then the After Dark (18+, X-Rated, Too Hot For Fur…y) show at 10:30PM the same day. There is a jam session on Sunday hosted by Etsu that people can bring instruments along to or your hands and feet.
Applications for DJ’s are still open until the 11th of August and you can apply for it here and if selected will get sponsor-level registration that’s generally worth about $75. But that is the only financial contribution you will be receiving.

If you'd like something featured in the newsletter, drop either me (
PascalFarful ) or the FA musicians page a note with details or drop a shout on the FA Musicians page! I would add that sending me notes increases your chance of me not losing your message.

I don't think whoever wrote it is going to try and find you on FA lol. You should be safe from being sued XD

That is a good point. Though morally it'd be nice to credit it to the people who actually made it~

I agree. You could always say in your description that you would credit whoever wrote the music you're covering, but you don't know who they are, so you can cover your ass at least. XD
