Furry Musicians Newsletter Week 55 - 28/02/17
7 years ago
Welcome to the fifty-fifth edition of the Fortnightly Furry Musicians Newsletter! Snowpocolypse edition!
Short newsletter today, since my life is fast being filled with university work and people who don’t put in the time to do any work and leave it all to the last minuet and thus must be pelted with sticks. As well as Snowmaggeddon which is kinda irritating, confusing and annoying.
But one thing I have been noticing nowadays, and I may well expand upon this when I get some time, is that a lot of folks release music on things like Bandcamp and such under completely different names to those of their FA accounts and other furry identities. I would suppose that’s something to do with wanting to distance oneself from the furry fandom in order to better sell records. But I dunno.
And thus, with that in mind…
Can’t keep my eyes from adverts in the sky…
…because my eyes have frozen.

If you'd like something featured in the newsletter, drop either me (
PascalFarful ) or the FA musicians page a note with details or drop a shout on the FA Musicians page! I would add that sending me notes increases your chance of me not losing your message.
And the subject you speak of "Identities" J.A.B Is a band I've started 3 years ago with a buddy of mine. Definitely kept it separate from the furry side. Second. My name, comes from my deviant account. At least similar to it xD Me and my buddy made a deadline for the release for our EP. Bandcamp was just easier then distroKid was.
My buddy in the band knows that I'm a furry. But I'd say i'm kind of a "Closet Furry" sort of. Him and one buddy of mine knows. None of my family members, or the rest of my friends know.
And I figured to share my bands stuff here. Besides going to other people shows and "Promote"
It's an unfortunate conundrum because the only way to add value to the fandom and legitimize its success is by furries choosing to be open about being furry when they are successful. If being furry negatively impacts success, whaddya do?
I've spent a lot of time thinking about how to mitigate this and have settled on a two part solution. (Feel free to discuss!)
1) Create a fursona you can live with.
If there's any characteristic or association that causes you guilt or shame when you show your grandma, it's likely it won't fly in your social environment. Granted, furries are on the edge of society and the whole point of this is to draw closer to being considered "normal," so it helps to have an approachable identity that isn't too "out there" for bridging between the fandom and the rest of the world.
Case in point - I'm Onic here on FA, but I actually go by Wolf Godwin (nickname-last name) on Soundcloud and social media. I don't go out of my way to "be furry" over there, but I'm not forcefully avoiding the topic either. Over time I've even grown more open about being part of this community. People who personally know me are responding positively.
2) Redefine success.
Making the big bucks can happen with the right circumstances and enough hard work. The last thing we want is to lose it by staining our name with the negative stigma that permeates the mindset of non-furries. But here's the thing. It's not all about money. Real success is achieving personal goals to improve yourself, and community goals to improve society. On whatever scale this takes place, act with integrity, take pride in your work, and have fun for gosh sakes. There's nothing shameful about attaching the term "furry" to that, and you can pull your furriness along with you to recreate a new mindset in non furries when they see how awesome you are in general.
I'm going to repost this to my personal journal, so if the comments here get clogged, feel free to hop over and give me an earful.
