Are you fucking kidding me? Seriously? This is why most times now, big sales like this are done in direct cash or like a uhm... those money order things. That way scams can't happen. Definitely get on the ball with the police to get your money back! Ad if anything, the RV too!! Because at this point, he kinda stole it.

Yeah. Unfortunately it was out of state, which made it super complicated. I should have insisted on a walmart to walmart transfer. I've learned my lesson about this, that's for sure.

Yeah. Which is even sadder. The whole family thing could have been an excuse for why the check bounced, when really the person could have never had $3k in the first place and just wrote a check they knew wasn't going to process properly. By the time it happened, they already had the vehicle and were long gone. Hopefully you still have all the information and such they gave you, and they can track this person down, get the RV back, and get your money back. Also include in the report how you lost the money as well from paypal. Maybe they'll compensate you that as well in a court hearing.

That's what I'm hoping for. Luckily, I guess, the RV is still at where I left if, so if I can SOMEHOW find a way to get it, which is going to be really really hard considering I'm LITERALLY broke, I still have it and can re-sell it in a more reputable way. I plan to contact the fraud department for the bank that issued the check, the fraud department at walmart for the walmart to walmart check, as well as the fraud department for MY bank. My bank said they couldn't do anything, but even the police officer I spoke to said to try again because they SHOULD be able to do something.

Legally your bank is responsible for their mistakes involving your money, so they are lying through their teeth when they say they can't do anything.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I'll be contacting them first thing in the morning.

If they don't do anything, go after them for trying to cover their ass for their mistake.

Unfortunately it’s not really their mistake. Preclearing check funds is done as a courtesy and it’s standard to reverse it plus charge a bounced check fee if it ends up not clearing. I know my bank has a $1500 limit on that though. Every bank varies on limits and it depends on the type of check.

I was reading about your situation and I'm super sorry you have to deal with this Thanxia! I know it's been two weeks, but I wanted to throw in that RexCanis is right about the bank not being at fault for releasing funds. I'm a supervisor at a bank and if you have your account long enough, most banks will make the funds available faster because they are working under the assumption that checks you deposit will be good. Just make sure you thoroughly explain to your branch and security that you were scammed so they don't mark you as trying to do something fraudulent by depositing a bad check for a large amount, and then spending the money. A lot of security departments can tell when someone is scammed and are more lenient, and giving them the police report number can also help add legitimacy to your story of events.

If you ever need to sell something out of state demand that they either do a wire transfer, walmart to walmart transfer (which is kind of the same thing, just not directly to your bank account), or have them send you an official cashiers check from a bank (though even then they can be forged so you have to wait up to 5 business days for them to fully clear). I've seen a lot of customers scammed so I know how frustrating and helpless it can feel.

Yeah, I talked with them pretty extensively, and thats more or less what they told me. I explained to them that I was scammed, so whether or not they do anything beyond that is out of my control. I've definitely learned from this lesson. I'm doing another sale, and though its for significantly less, its still something, and they agreed to a walmart to walmart transfer, so all should go well on that front.
