At the weekend, I decided to partake in my annual pilgrimage to my TV set and sit there for over a day without sleeping to watch the 24 hours of Le Mans.
While barely keeping my eyes open at 4AM, it struck me. What challenges are there, and how are they overcame, for live musicians on a long concert in terms of alertness, tiredness and getting warn out?
I was sure percussionists, drummers and folks like that have particular trouble with keeping all their limbs from falling off, especially if you’re a jazz, metal or prog-rock drummer attempting all manner of complex things for hours at a time. Though I have a hunch similar issues befall keyboard players, guitarists and singers, DJ’s and the like as well.
If you have done live performance and have had to, or conversely, never had a problem with, these issues, I’d be interested to hear about it~

I managed to be called Dumbo by my amazon driver today, which was an odd experience. Oh and Toyota won Le Mans, at last. Which was good. I stayed up about 31 hours in total to watch it happen. The pain was unreal.
If you'd like something featured in the newsletter, drop either me (

The few live performances I've done were outside during the winter, so on the colder nights, trying to keep any feeling in my fingers at all was quite a challenge, and it's really hard to play keyboard when my fingers are numb. Though it was even more challenging I think for our bassist and guitarist.

Did you manage to find any really effective way to keep them warm, either during the gig or things like gloves and or heaters to wear or have onstage?

I tried out some glove liners, which did reasonably well to keep my hands warm, but I found my hands would slip off the keys, so I started just keeping hand warmers in my coat pockets and just stuffed my hands into my pockets between songs.

The trick for live performances would be to practice your instrument for a duration of time that is longer than your anticipated set. That way, you have the right stamina and are already used to playing, for example, 3 hours straight in comparison to a 1.5 hour set.
