How much have you spent on furry art? + LOTS of DATA! :D
7 years ago
Noticed this account is coming up to the 3 year mark, so figured I spend some time calculating out the total I have spent as well as other pieces of various data.
Keep in mind I have been a furry for about 8-9 years, these 3 years just represent my time of actively commissioning art.
Since 3 years ago, I have spent $1,405 for a total of 76 pieces not counting variants. This comes down to an average of $18.49 per piece. Keep in mind this is dragged down a decent amount by free and really cheap commissions.
Excluding free pieces, any pieces $9.99 or under (so all commissions $10 or more included), and excluding variants, it comes down to about 38 pieces at an approximate cost of $1,205 total for an average cost of $31.71 for a "real" piece. Keep in mind that this price too may be slightly misleading, as split 50/50 commissions I do count as the amount I paid, so something like a $80 piece I paid $40 for I count as $40 for the piece. Multiple character YCHs also are counted in this way, otherwise some of them would reach the $100s whereas I paid far less than that.
Here are a bunch of various data points for anyone interested:
Average cost per piece: $18.49
Average cost w/o low outliers: $31.71
Average cost w/o low and high outliers: $28.37
Median cost (excludes all $5s in calculation, otherwise it would skew data): $30
Most common commission cost: $5
Other most common commission costs: $20, $25, $30, $40, $45
Lowest cost for a piece: Free / $1
Highest cost for a piece: $85 (definitely overpaid)
Highest cost for a NSFW piece: $60
Cost of all art for a 8,900+ subscriber YouTube channel ( https://www.youtube.com/tacettheterror ) : $255 (can vary heavily)
Percent of commissions free or $10 and under: 50%
Percent of commissions above $50: 10%, about 18% if counting split commissions where I paid less than $50 while piece was more than $50
Percent of commissions I was satisfied with: 90%
Percent of artists I commissioned again after 1st commission: 75%
Percent of artists I have commissioned that I then commissioned 5+ times: 25%
If you happen to commission a lot, please feel free to share some of your own data on commissioning. I would love to hear other people's experience and cost with commissioning as I feel like it is an extremely under discussed topic given how frequently many members of the community do it.
Also, happy 4th of July everyone! :D
