LibreOffice. It's not Word but it's close enough to cover most of your bases and is also useful for recovering Word documents when the real thing eats them.

Try Open Office. It's basically a free version of MSWord that's compatible with everything else.

I'll certainly look into that and Google Docs, or as I said above, they might be the same, I don't know.

LibreOffice is an improved version of OpenOffice. The latter is a bit stagnant - basically most of the developers jumped ship to Libreoffice after a dispute.
It's not cloud-based, no. It's just an open-source alternative to Office. Works on Linux too.
