-Movie Recommendation- District 9
District 9Seeing as I already put forth a great deal of my thoughts on this movie in my review on Friday (see it here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/886650/), I should probably pick a different film for the recommendation this week, right? I mean, the idea is to get as varied a selection as possible to the passerby who occasionally glance in the direction of this text.
Well, nuts to that, says I. District 9 is a flippin' unbelievable film, probably my favorite of the last year or two. Excellent story, deep and interesting characters, downright amazing effects... the good list goes on and on. I've seen it twice and that's still not enough.
Quick note: I've seen some criticism leveled at the beginning of the film, the faux-documentary part, with boring seeming to come up a lot. This, I don't understand. It's an essential part of the movie, one that quickly fills in the backstory and why everyone's acting the way they are, and especially shows what kind of person Wikus is (he's a strange one, that guy. And the most realistic human protagonist in a movie in recent memory). It's interesting stuff, and while it may seem a tad slow compared to the pace of the film towards the end, it's hardly boring.
District 9 made $37 million over the weekend, more than matching its mere $30 million budget. But that's not nearly enough. This is a smart, enjoyable, action-packed, moving sci-fi picture, and it's one that will be remembered for years to come. Be sure you don't miss out now, when you can see it on the glory of the big screen.
Trailer (which is another thing people don't seem to like. Can't figure out why, it hooked me right away): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHihFA8q8xI

One must have faith. I was seeing a lot of wavering as to whether or not this would be good at all. And considering how that skyrocketed past most expectations, I think we can breath easy on any possible continuations. That probably won't happen for a while. If they happen at all (anything can happen, after all).
