I understand the trepidation. It seems that when an animated series or feature uses the fact it's in 3D/CG as a selling point the responsible studio doesn't give us Shrek, they give us Ratatoing.

It's like they're saying "we know it's a shitty script, but if we pay to have realistic shading and textures added you won't notice we didn't care!"

However, most animation these days is CG. In fact, The My Little Pony Movie (2017) was done entirely in Toon Boom "Harmony," and for its own story flaws it looked and sounded beautiful.

Even with modern tools it takes years to put out a feature length animated film, so I'm not very worried that they mentioned the new movie quietly at the toy fair, or that CG is the only detail they shared about it. It's probably all they actually know at this point, and the writers are likely just now starting to work on what the story will be about.

I'm just hoping that Hasbro is wiling to shell out a decent budget for the production instead of cutting back.

The speculation among the Bronies on EQD is flying hot 'n' heavy. I'll assume nothing is final until Hasbro says so. That said, I would be disappointed -- and surprised -- if Hasbro tossed out all the assets they developed for the MLP Movie and went the full CG route. No one knows how much the 2017 feature costs, though most estimate it was around $10 million (for a movie that made $60 million world-wide). A CG feature -- one that DOESN'T look like Ratatoing -- would cost at least 6 times that much. I guess we'll know for sure once Hasbro starts releasing production art from this new movie.

Speaking of MLP: The Movie, I totally agree: Despite its flaws (and they are many) it was still an amazing production. A film of that quality, but with a story like the one they created for last year's Holiday special, would be truly incredible.

3D might be for scenery and vehicles. Doesn't automatically mean the characters will be 3D

The movie from 2017 looked great for what it was. If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it.

I'm guessing this movie'll be a vehicle to justify the existence of a G5, although I would be happy to be proven wrong by a good closer for G4.

Maybe they'll shell out the bucks to borrow/reinvent the legendary multiplane animation camera of days long long ago.

I will say I have much trepidation when it comes to a second MLP movie. with the wretched hanging on of the ugly Equestria Girls they kept foisting on us, the actual MLP Movie where they stayed Ponies all the way through was a little bit of releife
I would suspect that a second Movie would hold up the young six and try to get us to like those as much as the Mane six.
a Yak, a Dragon, an Hippogryph, a Changeling, a Gryphon, and a pony stallion. Shall we love these as well as a Librarian, a Farmer, a Caterer, a Forester, a Weathergirl and a Tailor? Hasbro will certainly want us to try.

I'm anxious, then, to get hints of what the story will be. I really hope they keep the same look as the last movie.
