Thoughts about heights and dimensions in a furry world
6 years ago
Hi again.
I'm currently running around with measuring tape and thinking hard about some fictional things like usual. Though as people know me I tend to go a bit more into detail with everything and I'm wondering about a few things. Maybe you are able to give suggestions here.
How big in height do you think is an average anthro? Same as a Human or bigger?
After comparing a bunch of characters throughout FA and my personal observations I came to the conclusion that the average height could be somewhere around:
8ft (an average male Human is 5.9 ft)
Would you think that's agreeable? I know there exist of course people who might be even bigger in the community though I'd think that those would count as the XXL kinda population with specific homes fitting them. I'm accounting for what an anthro Dragon or Wolf to name the most common anthros would be like.
At the same time I was thinking of what length a bed would have for such people and my idea was about a 9ft long bed possibly.
If there's a staircase for such people would you say that...
4.6ft of width between walls
would make enough space for an anthro character to walk between?
As you see, I'm pondering in what way furniture and rooms might be sized up to if it's a standard home for an average anthro character. If some people would give their suggestions on how big they think things like
-doorframes
-stairsteps
-chairs
-ceilings
etc.
would be in ft / inch in their opinion, it would help me well.
To be more specific and leave you with something interesting, I'm trying to work out a floor plan of the room that Shiny is living at. Shiny is of course pretty short compared to an anthro character but the house belonged one beforehand and Brakk (Shiny's dude who owns the house) is basically an anthro that can shapeshift to become Shiny's size. So I'd like to calculate on the anthro average as a basis.
If I'd go by math and take my body height for an example then that would mean 5.9ft Human average size are 100% and 8ft end up being 135,6%. I could of course use that and now multiply everything average for a Human by 1.356 to get an average anthro's size for furniture and all that but would that be right, I wonder? =o
My results would be from(average Human sizes) to (average anthro character size):
-bed length 6.3ft to 8.5ft (I was close with my 9ft, it seems)
-doorframes 6.8ft to 9.2ft
-stairsteps 0.7ft to 0.95ft
-chairs 1.5ft to 2ft
-ceilings 9ft to 12.2ft
Would such measurements make sense? I am no architect but I'd like to know if people would find it reasonable. Like, would your character be able to move around well if houses and objects would usually come in a 35% bigger format because of the bigger standards of anthro society? Would they possibly need a smaller or bigger built version of such because they would be too small or big?

FA+

Meanwhile Draco is 1.9m tall. :3
Lockjaw's as tall as a normal Totodile. :3
If you ask me, it would be preferable if everyone was still roughly around the same height on average like humans now. And if that were the case and the new average would indeed be 8 ft, then a simple average size increase of a set percentage of pretty much everything could certainly work I'd say. Of course there'd still be smaller folks too such as your Shiny, but there's always ways to work around that and not too big of an issue. Would be a totality different story for like, say, 15 ft folks.
That's my thought on the matter anyway.
In a canon sense for Shiny's personality, one of his personal flaws has been a little bit of a height complex. The lil guy does admire big people and often feels too small. The whole world around consisting of mostly things that are rather big for him to use (he rarely gets to ride in a rollercoaster because he's always considered too small. XD) doesn't help the fact that he's feeling eager to get a growth spurt someday.
That said though, his bigger dudes all usually care enough about him and appreciate him the way he is that he does most of times overcome that complex and likes himself the way he is. ^_^
I'm glad that I got from you a bit of support in my theory. Makes me feel more confident in making Shiny's room in the dimensions I had in mind here.
Still wondering though: would be a staircase width of 4.6ft be enough for Shiny to welcome visitors, even if they are slightly wider than the average Human? I actually watched at footage recordings of what the biggest record of shoulder width for a Human body builder is at the moment and that's 3,75ft.
I'd say 4.6 ft in width would be enough, but it still depends on the size of the individual, especially with how sizes tend to differ so drastically with certain anthros. On average though I'd say that would be plenty enough and generally not really that much of an issue! I think Yosher would be able to visit Shiny. =3
Of course, this doesn't include when folks (including Shiny) are inflated or something and will become stuck because of that. Although I wonder if Shiny's desire for a growth spurt is the reason he enjoys being inflated... >w>
Perfect then! I think I found a good format there, Yosher! Even though a few people might be a bit too wide to get in withought going sideways it seems reasonabble enough. =D
Hey, you read Shiny like a book, dude. That's asically the reason. Shiny arrived in that society and got used to all the new things after a while but his professors and dudes did introduce him to things like balloons, growth and all the toony stuff bit by bit which definitely had an effect on him and his curiosity.
Heck, Big G who is basically an actor version of our Godzilla is like his big idol on TV and each time he gets to know friendly people bigger than him he can't help but imagining him someday as a big Totodile being a friendly helper in his neighbourhood.
The whole inflation part in that is just loads of fun and has the nice addition of giving Shiny a different point of view on things. Of course he does enjoy that. X3
Also doesn't surprise me that someone like that would be Shiny's idol. I could see him eagerly watching this Big G dude on the television with his tail wagging excitedly while copying his movement behind the TV in a cute fashion. X3
Hmm. Makes me wonder how Shiny sees Yosher, though... >w>
In terms of crimes and such I never really think of really dangerous stuff but more the wackier kinds of crimes. Take something like "Disney's Bonkers" where people can cause mischief and the police force also use unorthodox and silly methods to do something about it. ;3
Indeed. You wanna know something even wilder about this version of Godzilla? I basically made him a regular guy who has growth powers that he uses in the productions he's working in. He also is quite athletic and uses kicks and tailwhipping techniques against foes. I basically took the Chinese martial artist and actor Jackie Chan as an example because to me he always appears very friendly and charismatic in the movies he stars in.
Take that mix of a character and imagine the guy has things like all sorts of action and monster movies, perhaps Saturday morning hero shows for kids like something of the "Power Rangers" kind or the many other fun action shows that ran on various broadcasters in the past (Jackie Chan had an own cartoon that was very entertaining, and then again, Godzilla also had shows in which he, sometimes she has been quite heroic). =D
Can't help but sharing this:

It shows Shiny when he got lucky to win a meet with Big G in a raffle once. This is basically a photo poster that Shiny retrieved from the broadcasting company who arranged the rafffle as a memorial of it and it hangs in Shiny's room above his little desk. ^_^
Shiny sees Yosher as afun'n'cool Yoshidude with a nice way of fashion. That's actually another part of Shiny's personality. He does enjoy pretty things a lot. Since the day people introduced him to clothing items he's always been fascinated with them. Not only that, he also finds some joy in beauty products. When he gets out of the shower and can use a bottle of PokéShine for his scales and looks at himself in the mirror, he gets all giddy about the sparkling look.
I guess that's also in a way partly why Shiny finds rubberstuff and transformations and stuff like playing with paints and all that nice. He loves amusing changes and adding things to his appearance. It's just that not too many shops have things in his size and he usually relies on a few dudes who give him a new look now and then. I got a bunch of outfits for him already.
Room heights of twelve feet and an average of eight feet in body size seems alright for an anthro, doesn't it? I can always imagine there to be some houses to be built XXL for the larger folks. =3
Not sure if it really helps, but eh.
Hehe, of course I know that Rob can be macro, too. X3

If the standard would be a little bigger though I am sure even the smaller people would either have smaller homes or would get used to the slightly bigger furniture still.
Interesting though that it's still a rare possibility of somebody being like 35% bigger than the average. Stands for that my theory seems still looking good to base of. =3
Anyways! I still wonder just how tall my fursonas could be!
People of course can have all their own imagination involved in that but I could imagine that Rick is at least 8ft or even a little bigger. =3
I appreciate people's input when it comes to what they think of my fursonas! Rick is basically crowdsourced! I didn't come up with many of his features, other artists did!

My main OC Dogry stands at a perfect 6 feet tall, making him a good measuring stick to compare against other characters. He'd have no trouble with the homes of the tall, but I'd imagine he'd start to feel cramped in the dens of shorter creatures. Plus his body size "varies" at times (thanks to food or puffy shenanigans.) which would make exploring anything even more challenging. Not even the best in dwarven rat-crafted chairs and benches can handle the plump backside of the mountain dragon that is Dogry!
Besides that, even if there was some kind of size variance between different communities I'm sure even without magic or sufficiently advanced technology to basically act as magic, there'd be ways to accommodate friendly tourists and visitors.
No, that doesn't mean giant mech suits for the normal height ones in macro-land XD It'd be cool though! And yeah, I thought there could be ways to adjust height for people if they are naturally more of the macro class and want to not step on everything accidently. <X3
Hmm... Oof, without that stuff it'd make normal places pretty inaccessible to macros ^-^" And micro places to normal peeps. Oops.
Larger houses need stronger materials to support the extra weight of the structure, or be very carefully built with standard materials. Either way is more expensive for construction. The alternative is to just, have a normal house, which is too cramped for a larger resident.
Most characters in my canon are human proportioned, but those that are too big, or too small, have to "deal with it" usually, because they're so far away from the norm, and there are so few of them, that it's not really anyone's problem but theirs.
Custom furniture and homes are always an option, but an expensive one.
To finally answer your question: if a home is 35% bigger, most of my characters can live in it, but most of them are human size, which is clearly below the intended size of the house occupant. Reaching kitchen cupboards along the ceiling will be difficult, but that’s about all I can think of. Everything else would just be mildly awkward size related quirks brought about by this hypothetical 35% bigger house.
Shiny is pretty small and thanks to the nice people around him he usually is fine, even if somebody larger than him would accidently sit on him it would just fare like it does in this example:

I got my measurements mostly from what came out as the most appearing in observations of fully anthro characters (most of them Dragons and Wolves). Might be that people take inspirations from Lizardmen and Werewolves a lot when creating such characters and therefore such end uplarger than the average Human.
What about balloonies, who have average heights that can slightly fluctuate with changes in temperature or internal pressure?
Pretty cool to think about, I can only imagine how expensive clothes or shoes must be with so many tall people, especially when they must be made to fit many races needs!
Yeah, when we go superrealistic with it all there appear many question marks at various corners. It's mostly up to everybody#s individual outlook and the try to compromise with the outlook of the ones they RP with. X3
I'm Marc but most here call me Shiny like my Totodile mascot or Totodude. Nice to meet another fan of the Reptile-kind. ^_^
I'm somebody who enjoys to connect ideas of various people together. Since the day I arrived in the community and Shiny came to be a lot of people impacted the way how my character developed.
Basically said, I like to appreciate all the good things coming my way which is why Shiny's world is represented as a copy of FA's community. Loads of people with many likes and sorts of characters that live in a modern landscape with cities and towns.
The whole story about why I was looking more into this subject here was to determine more about how a house could work that an anthro lived in. Shiny is pretty small and has the luck to use the whole attic space as his own.
I'm still working out to draw it as like a floor plan but as for that I wanted the dimensions all more plausible I thought of how wide and tall most anthro characters could be.
That though surely is just the result of my calculations and not supposed to be a set rule for everybody. Just thought it's an intruiging subject to share. =3
I'm glad that it catched your interest. I always appreciate people for following me with a watch and moreso I enjoy sharing conversations with people. If you ever need somebody to listen to you, you can always send me a message. =D
I tend to be a pretty creative person and I fantasize a lot. I have my own fantasy world where in addition to our own universe there's universes centered around all these different video games (Pokemon for example). I imagine I'd have one for the FurAffinity community but until now I'd never thought about it! In each one life is pretty much stable, much like our own universe. Rather than clump them all together into one world immediately, I've gone with this idea where one person discovers that there's all these universes after wishing Pokemon were real one night (this idea came about when I went through a big pokemon craze a few years ago), and from there the entire world changes and everybody can mix together or live in their individual universe. Sorta like a train station, you can mix together on the "main" universe (our own), or you can go to one of the game universes and be there. It's really an intriguing idea, similar to yours, actually.
My workaround for the height difference problem is to have it where everyone can shapeshift and shrink or grow to whatever size they want. So a 10 foot tall Parasaur can fit in a 5 foot 9 inch doorway no problem. There's a lot more to it but I'm still figuring it all out. I've tried to write stories about it but I have so many ideas that it can be overwhelming! But since I've joined here I'm regaining that interest and desire to do this again. I might just have to create a universe centered around all reptilian species, given my current love for them.
As for how I cam across you, It was random luck actually. I saw a comment you left on someones page and decided to look at your page cause I do that to find new artists to watch, usually. When I found your page I knew immediately i had to watch cause I loved what i saw there! Plus Totodile happens to be a favorite species of mine so that didn't hurt either! XD
Anyhow, I'm glad you're around if I need someone to talk to, I absolutely love talking to people once I start conversing with them (my anxiety makes starting conversations hard but once they get going I'm 100% fine). I'll be around! =D
And thanks for the watch! Right now I'm just putting up all my adopts but soon I'll start doing my own works and put them up! :)
Glad you liked my profile. I spent a while to make it informative and welcoming looking. Might tweak a bit at it yet once I got more references for Shiny ready in the future. The lil fella has a lot to his character that I'd find fun to properly present to people. =3
I wish you much success with your upcoming projects and of course am around whenever you wanna send me something via notes. ;3
I'll check my library for books on ergonomics and architecture tomorrow. I might be able to get an idea of how big doors and things ought to be.
Still appreciated you went through it nontheless. I was moreso looking if people are thinking that my measurements would make sense based from where I was coming from. =3
Personally I tend to imagine furries as being around similar heights to their feral counterparts. Although smaller species might be sized up.
Like, my fursona is 4"7', 'cuz I wanted to be big enough to be able to interact with the world around me but short enough to be considered a domesticated cat. Same reason Brakk is that height. If Brakk evolved to Feraligatr, he'd probably be around normal Feraligatr height.
