Just Out Of Sight

Something that I've been wrestling with, is whether or not to put bystanders into the background of the comic strip. I've decided not to do this because extra characters just make the panels look cluttered, and don't really contribute anything to the action.
However, I've also noticed that the absence of peripheral characters might strike readers as odd, like the room or the area is strangely empty. In some cases, this is true, but in others, there ought to be courtiers, guards, townspeople, and retainers milling about.
Well, imagine that they're there, just standing outside the viewpoint of the frame.
MAD Magazine cartoonist Sergio Aragones was fantastic at drawing elaborate crowd scenes. I'm not. I don't have that kind of patience, nor the aptitude for making every figure unique and engaged in some activity. When the situation calls for it, I can draw a rank of twenty soldiers, but otherwise I'm going to fall back on cheating, like I did with the crowd at the pier the other day. Thank God for furry cons! Where else can a person get a thousand anthro characters in one place at one time, eh?
If it helps, you can also imagine that Her Grace doesn't want a lot of retainers crowding around her, so her staff wisely slinks out of sight when she approaches.

And I quote, "I'm NEVER doing that again."
Bunners
You've drawn crowds when you needed to, such as when Kathy arrives in Kiyanti.
On the other hand, we understand that hiring all those extras is expensive! (* insert cattle call comment, here *)
