Ursa Majors--Or Not?
I sent a note to the staff of AnthrOhio asking when the Ursa Majors award presentations will be scheduled, so I could plan a day trip, as "Carry On" is nominated.
This is what I got back:
"Kathy,
I'm sorry, we did not receive an event submission for the Ursa Majors at AnthrOhio for 2019. I did have some correspondence with the person who hosts the awards last October, but did not receive any other requests for a panel after that.
As of now we do not have that event scheduled in our programming. You are still more than welcome to come attend AnthrOhio and enjoy our other events, but I understand if your trip was contingent on making this particular event.
Regards,
AnthrOhio Programming"
So apparently someone at the UMA organization didn't follow up on getting their event on the roster. I am guessing that the death of founder Fred Patten probably caused this oversight; in any case, I sent emails to two people on the UMA staff apprising them of the problem.
Since AnthrOhio is a month from now, I don't know if they'll be able to get on the schedule in time--of course, the AnthrOhio schedule hasn't been posted yet (insert eyeroll here) so who knows what'll happen.
I was looking forward to attending, even though it's a five-hour drive one way and I can only get away for a day because of all my animals.
I was even building a Brigade uniform to wear to the con!
Drat!

My own costume needs to be sewn together. The outfit is mostly off the shelf, but I need to sew on the gold cuffs and collar, change the buttons, and put the medals on the jacket. I hope nobody gets offended by my using actual medals I bought off eBay.
The head and mask might take a little longer to pull together. I have all the parts, I'm just waiting for the inspiration to strike. Plus, I was debating about wearing a mask and being there primarily to attend an award ceremony.
And a farmer works 24/7, especially if s/he raises livestock!
Pix or it didn't happen.
Red like Freddy's Or white like Jingurs?

I do hope that if you wear the Brigade uniform, you have some photos taken a post them.
The red tunic and breeches that Fred wears are the "everyday" uniforms. The armor was historically used in battle, but in recent times, modern body armor has supplanted it (like what Koz and Uri and Lucius were wearing at the outpost).
The ceremonial armor itself is a metal-and-leather version of the "naked chest and grass skirt" look of ancient Crocutan warriors.
The Duchess's palace toyboys---er, guards--wear small jewelled chest plates held in place by leather straps, and short kilts. You can see this in the scene where she is presenting young Fred with a dagger for saving the Loweza, and in the scene where Kathy and Sandy are sharing a wildebeest with her.
I might need to re-think my stitching this and go get some of that fabric you can use to bind stuff together with an iron.
I also picked up an old purse at the Goodwill to scavenge the gold metallic braided leather straps off of to use on the collar. Then I found out the purse can sell for $15 on eBay. I paid $2 for it.
Mrrrrmmmmnnnn!
For the cuffs I bought a pair of shorts in a gold-yellow color. I'll get the collar trim from them as well. I have replacement gold buttons, and the coat actually buttons across the left side like I draw the uniform tunic. I even found a dark brown lather belt with the same type of buckle--a solid rectangle that has a pin in the back.
I have a pair of ivory stretch breeches, a pair of knee-high black boots, and the braid from an old band jacket.
The mask is a half-mask that I'm repainting from "wolf" to "hyena" and I have to create a hood for the neck and eard. The mane is a furry head-band, the fabric comes from a child's leopard-print coat, and the rear "cartilidge" I cut from a plastic iced tea jug, and will glue to the mask, then put fabric ears over top.
More details as they become available.
