I want to make another OC/Questions

Today I was looking for something in my old portable hard drive and I happened to stumble on the first fury pic I ever faved way back in 2012 and thinking how cute it would be to make a character like it but I didn’t bother as I felt I’d be ripping it off and went on to FA(I joined E621 first then FA 4 days later) all these years later and seeing it again I’d like to make a similar character but again run into the issue of feeling like I’d be ripping off the original although every aspect would be changed and thus guilty.
How similar can you make something before it’s considered copying? The things the original has that I’d like to do but different ways are tri colors, markings that show the grade and valve locations ,and tie down points.
The other thing is I’ve never made a truly original OC so I don’t know how you go about picking anything. I’m thinking this character would be another inflatable dinosaur (and maybe keep it a T-Rex although I feel like something different would be better)and have a sibling for Zoran and Leslie, no idea if a brother or a sister or age though. I’ve also debating having permeant scuba gear on this character (no idea how you do that) along with webbed feet and hands. Colors I’m thinking of would be teal and pink(based off of the Transformers seacons of all things) or different shades of blue (green-blue is one that comes to mind) I think this character would have some markings mainly to show the max pressure the character should be filled with numbers on which chamber gets filled first as some toys do. The last thing is the only thing obvious and that would be a diaper as Zoran and Leslie have one this character should too but no idea on the print since that’s a requirement for me.
Anyways I figured I’d get that off my chest before I forget and like I asked before. How similar can you make something before it’s plagiarism?

As for the gender; ultimately whatever you're comfortable with. Personally I like having the variety, and ultimately; when it comes to writing a "good/interesting" character there isn't that much different between the two.
I’m still not sure about Gender as I do feel most comfortable keeping the character male but variety is something i would like. Heck if I keep it a T-Rex I love the idea of an older sister for Zoran and Leslie!

And yeah; if you're looking for uniqueness; dinosaurs are already a little on the rare side fur-wise, inflatable/toy ones and aquatic ones still more so.
Hehe; Zoran and Leslie having an older sis is a pretty cute idea too.
I'm just a basic gray raccoon, which was inspired by my love for raccoons, and Disney's Meeko plush. Dozens of other furs have gray raccoons, and some look very similar to mine. It happens. Here is a good example of how close characters can be, without stealing from each other.

We each came up with our own characters independently of each other. We both happen to have one green and one blue eye. We both love to wear overalls/shortalls, and other cub clothing. Yet, we are still different. His eyes are reversed from mine, and thankfully, we didn't both happen to use the same name! That would have been very confusing. Even with the similarities, I had my raccoon character way back before FA started, and he had his for a long time too. Talking with the artist reveals that many of his real life interests and motivations overlap with mine, which is likely why our characters turned out to be similar in so many ways. But, we are sufficiently different enough to be uniquely ourselves at the same time.
Consider how many furs have skunk characters. Some are uncommon colors, but almost none are totally unique in their colors. Some have uncommon patterns, but the vast majority are basic black with one or two whites stripes. It is likely that most did not copy from each other though. It just happens to be what most real life skunks look like. Characters based on real life species, or even on combinations of species, are often likely to share similar characteristics, just by random chance. No plagiarism or copying is involved most of the time.
If your character had intricate markings and colors that were very unusual for the species, and they happened to be exactly the same as someone else's, it would probably indicate copying, but even then, it would be hard for someone to prove, unless one was an exact trace off of the other's art. Obviously, if you have different patterns and colors than someone, and the character is into different things, then you are different characters. There are plenty of real life people in this world who look like someone else too. One can't tell the other to stop looking the way they do, just because they are too similar.
You character reminds me of Barney, but it is also very different than Barney at the same time. If your character was 100 percent inspired by Barney, there would be absolutely nothing wrong with that. On the other hand, if you were going around claiming that you owned Barney, or the idea for Barney, then PBS would probably be sending you some very unwanted letters.
In any case, you should be safe. There's no harm in saying that your character was inspired by someone else's character. It would become a problem if you started claiming that you came up with the idea for the other person's character, or that you were the other person's character.
Also your insight makes me feel better about this since I felt meh about it 7 years ago and until now still felt unsure but I guess I’m ok in that regard! Don’t expect anything right away since I just got this all back to me yesterday.
