10 Cartoon Faves From Childhood
Just a silly post about ten of my fave cartoons to watch when I was growing up! I'd love to see what everyone else's were too. :)
Not in any particular order:
10. The Disney Afternoon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPAA2BFf9yk
Ok, so I'm cheating a little here. But the Disney Afternoon consisted of a block of -really awesome cartoons-, so it's hard to pick just one. The later years weren't so great, but I have fond memories of watching Duck Tales, Gummi Bears, and Tale Spin over and over.
9. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iv82iJ_MT4
I'm a huge Bill & Ted fan, so you can bet I watched this cartoon. I think it's one of Hanna-Barbera's better 80s & beyond offerings, with great writing and the original cast members lending their voices to boot! I MEAN COME ON, GEORGE CARLIN! UNF.
8. Magical Adventures of Mumfie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZarkKB7JVa0
I've talked about this one before. I actually was older when I saw this running on Fox as a mini series, but I was in love with the character animation. It's -really- exceptional stuff. The story is told with little children in mind as the audience, and the male narrarator provides the voice for the three main characters (including Pinky, who is female). It takes some getting used to, but the visuals are worth it.
7. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yeA7a0uS3A
When I was four years old, this was the shit. I mean seriously, He-Man was probably my first crush. Then She-ra came along and I was like "screw you He-Man, she's got a -flying horse-."
6. Care Bears
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNm5Hqow78I
There were actually two versions of this show, this one (DIC) and a later one produced by Nelvana. I liked them both, but I have to admit that this one will always have a special place in my heart. Besides, they didn't wear friggin' CLOTHES in this version.
5. The Real Ghostbusters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h9LGbJf8a0
FUCK. YES. Fantastic writing, lots of spooky shit, this was one of my absolute favorites as a kid. Arty and I recently picked up the first volume of the collection, and I've been in retro heaven ever since. The characters, from lovable man-child Ray, to deadpanning geek Egon, are well developed. I can almost forgive them for the constant LOLOLOLOL SLIMER ATE SOMETHING jokes.
Almost.
4. The Wuzzles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c82cAG6dOtE
I didn't always get a chance to see this one, since we didn't always have access to the Disney Channel, but that's ok, since only 13 episodes were made anyway. It still made quite an impact on me, as you can probably see from my GALLERY OF STRANGE HYBRID ANIMALS.
3. The Popples
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYPTdWi3yBI
Raise your hand if you had at least one stuffed popple! I used to -love- these little self-imploding suckers. I showed this cartoon series to Arty and he was horrified (but secretly I bet he liked it)
2. Muppet Babies
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ju75XsCO4o
Arty's giving me a glare because I'm playing the link on youtube, but he can pretty much go f himself, because COME ON. MUPPET BABIES. It was a cornucopia of wacky! I always got a kick out of how they used film footage.
1. David the Gnome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAphcvZaS8I
If you had Nickelodeon in the 80s, you might remember this one. I adored it, and looking back at the episodes as an adult, there's a lot more detail in them that I didn't catch as a kid.
I'm just glad I didn't see the episode where he KICKS THE BUCKET when I was a child. Now that's a mindfuck.
When you got "The Real Ghostbusters, did you got the Tin case or a normal boxset?
david the gnome was my FAVORITE too <3
i may have to declare this a meme and steal it >:]
Naturally, I was also semi-obsessed with the TMNT, like any other 80's/90's kid
I squeed when I saw real ghostbusters in there. Oh man. Ghostbusters was the shit. <3 never really cared for Slimer. If not for slimer, I'd still be watching the show. lol.
Wuzzles eh? o.o Is this the original parents of sparkledogs? oo;
Muppet Babies was always my favorite show as a kid. I'd watch every episode that came on with bright sparkling eyes, then wait for the Legends of the Hidden Temple to come on.
I never could remember the name of David the Gnome. Thanks for reminding me of this old show, that barely had airtime in the early 90s.
my top ten would be something like: eek the cat, sam & max, x-men(90s version), rocko's modern life, animanicas, batman the animated series (where joker straight up killed people, and has forever made mark hammel's the voice i hear when i read the joker's lines in comics), jackie chan adventures (i admit i was well out of being a child by then), bonkers, sonic the hedgehog (the kids version, waaay back in the day) and digimon because i was an awe-struke tool.
but man there were a lot more. some of them i just barely remember the name or a vague premise. these might have to change as time goes on. but man, thanks for the memories
fantastic story, engaging characters, cheerful theme song...and the ending was one to remember, I remember being close to tears as a kid when I watched that final episode.
I want it to be released on DVD, no way in HELL are my future kids going to miss out on that masterpiece of a show.
...speaking of which, I heard Muppet Babies are coming out on DVD soon, so that's definitely a must-get. Not to mention He-Man and Bill and Ted's cartoons are on youtube, free to watch (in the US)
http://www.youtube.com/show/heman
http://www.youtube.com/show?p=2TOOiji_yGw
10. The Animals of Farthing Wood
9. Ulysses 31
8. The Mysterious Cities of Gold
7. Visionaries
6. Transformers
5. The Real Ghostbusters
4. Thundercats
3. The Centurions
2. Dogtanian and the Three Muskerhounds
1. Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors
"Look around you. There are many things to see, that some would say could never be. These things I know. It's true and I will tell you so. They are there to see, if you believe. Trolls and wizards and fairy kings, birds that talk and fish that sing. And if your heart is true, then you will find them, too. In every wish and dream and happy home, you will find a kingdom of the Gnomes."
As for myself, I go back a little further. First, The Adventures of Beany & Cecil, the Sea-Sick Sea Serpent. ("A Bob Clam-pett Carrr-toooooon!") http://youtube.com/watch?v=zOxNtOMTpSo
Then there was a cat and dog pair called Ruff and Reddy. Loved the adventures these two had, especially when they were carried to the planet Munimula (that's aluminum spelled backwards!) Unfortunately, couldn't find that ep, but here's one with Pinky the Pint-sized Pachyderm. And yes, the voices should sound rather familiar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPnuFmYK9BE
And then there was The Flintstones! http://youtube.com/watch?v=zX53PVe8Rck and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJu8RreAGnM Brought to you by Winston cigarettes! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZvHiiWFbBU
Of course, the 60's were the time of opposite on TV. A family from the back hills strikes it rich with oil, so they move to Beverly Hills (The Beverly Hillbillies), was countered by a successful New York lawyer shucking city life and moving back to the country (Green Acres). Cartoons were no different, so from a family in the prehistoric past we move to a family in the far future, The Jetsons! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yjy-fnsmWR4
You can throw in the other Hanna Barbera cast as well, including the original Yogi Bear , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g8FLSGRYW0 (the original episode 1 first appeared as a short on The Huckleberry Hound Show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT9FuPN__OY Interesting thing to note here, Huckleberry did NOT appear in his opening. It was the Sponsor's Spot, so we get to see the Kellogg's rooster.
And from the late 60's (1969, to be exact) there was Scooby Doo, Where Are YOU? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_C2.....vtRDY&NR=1
And I'll throw Quick Draw McGraw in, just for Flinters enjoyment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhN19EBp_b4
Needless to say, most of my "growing up" cartoons were from the 50's and 60s', but I've never really stopped watching them. In fact, I was one of six Answermaniacs on the old Usenet news group, alt.tv.animaniacs. The Answermaniacs were the official responders to noobie questions about Animaniacs. "Yes, it's Pay OR Play!"
Oh geeze, this is long enough, I think. Have fun with my childhood, but don't break it!
Adam Ant
Huckleberry Hound (I never liked that blue dog)
Scooby Do, Where Are You (Yeah... I hated Scooby and Shaggy his beatnic owner. How many think the cartoonists where spoofing the late Bob Denver's character for Dobie Gullis?)
Also.....
Magilla Gorilla
The Jetson's
The Flintstones - (how many know that was a cartoon take-off of The Honeymooner's?)
Top Cat - (another cartoon take-off, this time of Phil Silver's, Sergeant Bilko?)
Secret Squirrel
Lippy the Lion
Snagglepuss
Pixy, Dixy and Jinx the Cat
Linus the Lionhearted - (from 1963) and Sugar Bear (who face was on a breakfast cereal)
Wally Gator
Yogi Bear
Hong Kong Phooey
The Banana Splits - (Sid & Marty Croft)
Land of the Lost - (Yes... even Jonas knows this one and spoofed it well here on FA)
LOST IN SPACE - (Yes.. there WAS a cartoon version of the crew and the Jupiter 2)

Man... I've got to stop; There are so many I recall.
Also, a special shout out to
*Lays sick in bed on vacation in a hotel, suddenly struck down by nostalgia at 4am*
This is the end of me!
*Raises hand*
My sister and I both had Popples, and yes, these cartoons, I have watched them all.
Although, for my list, I would need to add...
The Raccoons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXsjzcC4Jdw
And because I place them on a higher order then cartoons.
Fraggle Rock
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSDeoO-j3G0
Eureeka's Castle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpnZPM99JSM
And breaking the chain here, live action I want back.
The adventured of Pete & Pete
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcqSfAHvuAo
What.
WHAT.
WHAT?!
That's.... that's.....
Gubuh?! o_O
I was hooked on some other cartoons from the early '90s. My favorite shows while growing up were probably "Bump in the Night", an awesome claymation 'toon, and "Reboot", a very nerdy yet awesome 3DCGI cartoon, both appearing on Saturday morning.
Saturday morning cartoons today suck ass, though. It's all anime crap.
I wanted a Popples plushy so BADLY as a kid, but never got one :/ I thought they were so cool. XD
And I saw maybe two episodes of the Wuzzles... But loved them; I always loved weird animal mixes ^w^
Here are some of my favs, in no particular order:
Bravestarr
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaMo4k7iG7s
Sorta a favourite among my generation in Ireland, due an Irish TV station giving this a good showing. Sci Fi Western essentially.
Clementine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2ABJ06djW4
Ugh, this is one of my "special" cartoons, one of the cartoons that raised the standard, earned a special place in my heart, and taught me the great heights animation can reach too. Hard to explain the plot, but I don't think it simplifies it down too much to say it was about a girl who goes on a wonderful adventure, of wonder, and also menace. It was also a heavily serial affair (unusual for the time), and so twice through my childhood I tried to watch it from early in the series straight through to the end in sequence. Unfortunately something broke my pattern on both attempts. Pity, since the later episodes are a lot more surreal and dreamlike then the earlier ones, and I wanted to know how the transition took place.
I could go on about some of my other treasured favourites, but I'll leave it at that for now.
I'm going to be controversial here and say as much as I like a lot of US cartoons, I feel often they tend to be extremely "safe" with their animation and focus it towards kids. I'm not sure an animated cartoon as mature as David the Gnome could be made in the US, though by all means prove me wrong if you can provide examples.
1) TaleSpin
2) Road Rovers
3) SWAT KATS; The Radical Squadron
4) Tom & Jerry (the originals for the 1940's)
5) Bugs Bunny & Road Runner cartoons.
LEAST favorite 5 (no particular order):
1) SMURFS - I hate SMURFS!!!!!!!!!!
2) Ren & Stimpy - it got lame after a while.
3) Space Ghost - The original, not "Space Ghost, Coast-To-Coast"
4) Captain Planet - UGH!!! Please, what was Al Gore thinking?!
5) The Wuzzles - too much sugar for my blood stream.
you described my Saturday Morning when I was young.
Now if only can get ALL of the Popples vids on DVD...
I wanted to own one of thoes red cars when I was 5 damnit, i loved that cartoon
