Why Lusty Labyrinth remake took so long

So, Lusty Labyrinth is out, before the end of 2023 too, which wasn't an explicit goal but it's still nice to be able to start the next year knowing I don't have this project looming over me. Honestly, while it did take significantly longer than I had hoped to convert the Flash version to Unity, I'm really happy with the final version that I'm releasing.
That being said, I had hopes to make Lusty Labyrinth into something more, either that specific project, or have it lead to another project. In fact, since starting the remake of Lusty Labyrinth, I also started 3 other furry adult game projects, each with different artists, which unfortunately didn't come to fruition. I do want to showcase what has been made sometimes, I would just have to replace the assets I use with other ones. None of the projects made it very far, but it was still interesting to see the potential. They were pretty varied as well, from a brawler to a first person shooter, and then one was a side scroller.
As for Lusty Labyrinth, early in development of the remake I had hoped to make it into something a bit more, basically start with what it was, then start adding stuff like a super attack or revise some of the mechanics to make them more engaging. Unfortunately the project took so long to get here that I ended up scrapping all of those. No specific designs had been marked down for these either, since my focus was more on the potential new games I might end up making.
I do hope people enjoy this blast from the past, it's been nice to revisit as well, and now for 2024, I can start clean and focus on something new and different. Exactly what that is however, we'll all have to figure that out. Frankly, probably work since I've been doing some entrepreneurship with a friend. We'll see.

Dating shouldn't be this hard
General | Posted 2 years agoFor the last few months, I've been actively trying to date, and while I've had some successes, nothing has stuck for the long term yet. But that's not what I'm here to rant about. I'm here to rant about people's profiles on different platforms and how terrible they are on average. I don't know about the people behind them, frankly I probably never will, because a lot of them are putting so little effort into making an even basic dating profile that I swipe left almost immediately.
* Lack of smiling pictures: I get it, you're cool, you want to give off an attitude, but maybe try showing some positivity as well? Why would I want to date someone who just looks miserable in all of their pictures
* Pictures taken seconds from each other: I get that we don't always have a lot of photos off hand but come, on three versions of the same thing isn't saying much about you except "lazy". Usually they're not even smiling, or interesting in any way.
* No profile description: This might be a personal thing, but I'm not looking to just date a body, I want to know about your personality so say something, anything about yourself. And don't just say top or bottom, actually say something interesting about your personality, about what you enjoy.
* Generic tags: A lot of dating sites have a bunch of tags to classify interests, and low effort profiles all seem to have the same stuff: art, travel, cooking, music, all kinds of statements that don't feel like they mean much, especially when they don't have a description to underline them.
There's plenty of stuff that I'll swipe left for lack of compatibility, but at least those seem to know what they're looking for and I can imagine someone finding those profiles interesting. At the end of the day, if you're on a dating platform, project yourself to be datable. Have some energy, some interest, some follow through. Everything is already set up to require so little effort.
Also, this isn't furry specific, people are pretty bad at this on average.

So where's Lusty Labyrinth?
General | Posted 2 years agoLet's not bury the lead, I have multiple projects going on. When I came back to the furdom, my goals were always clear: I want to start making awesome porn games again. It started with the remake of Lusty Labyrinth, but my ambitions were always well bigger than that. Right now, every single day, I'm putting some time into one of several really awesome projects which I won't reveal for now, but are all really cool and unique, especially in the realm of porn games, let alone furry porn games.
That does mean that Lusty Labyrinth was set aside to some degree. I actually worked on it today, debugged the loading system and I'm readding skills and achievements, and the next few days should be focused on those. Unfortunately, Lusty Labyrinth is some some ways away from a rerelease, however that is because it is a game that deserves to be remade correctly. People mentioned stuff like being able to choose your custom color, so I'm figuring that out for instance, and I might have a few more surprises up my sleeves.
As for the other projects, at this time I don't have a timeline to give. I have one in my heart, but I don't want to create any undue expectations. Suffice to say that at some point, I will have more to show, and I think you'll all be blown away by what I (we?) have in store.
Anyone who want to chat, you can find me on Discord, bahamutdragons#4471. I'm not really active in any channels so it'll have to be a DM. Thanks!

It took over 3 years, but I finally got there.
General | Posted 2 years agoI wasn't always sure if I would get there, sometimes it felt like people I knew could reach that point, but it remained elusive. The months went by, then the years, I stood strong and kept moving forward, wondering if it ever would happen to me. I expected it would, how could it not, yet three whole years, it feels like such a long journey. And now it's come to a positive end. I have covid.
Do not weep for me, I basically feel like I have the flu. Between a relatively young and (otherwise) healthy body and four doses of vaccines, I don't expect this'll do much damage.
Alright, back to work.

Lusty Labyrinth, most of the game loop now works properly
General | Posted 2 years agoThis has been a busy week! On one hand, plenty of IRL stuff to deal with, mostly work related but most of it positive, just took a bit of my time. On the other, Lusty Labyrinth is also moving forward, I can play a full level now, the character screen between levels allows for leveling up and equipping and selling items is close to done. I've even gotten a build to work on my Android phone and it worked great. So the core production portion is almost over, which will lead to polishing because a lot of stuff looks pretty bad right now, like screen transitions and the resolution of visual assets.
I still don't have a proper timeframe as to when I'll release the final game, as I'm still figuring some stuff out as to what'll happen after. I do have another project brewing behind the scenes and it's likely that one will move along somewhat further before I even release LL. I'm making the best of the opportunities, which means you guys will get much better games out of it. And ultimately, I'm hoping to come out with something that'll blow your minds. I'm certainly working towards that as we speak and I look forward to sharing more in the future.

How do you want to play your porn games?
General | Posted 2 years agoI'm wondering what would be your ideal setup to play porn games. For Lusty Labyrinth, I'm already intending to support some way to play with mobile phones, probably through on screen arrows, but I'm curious to how many people would / will use an option like that. What about gamepads, would you guys use that for a porn game specifically? I'm trying to think ahead as well because I have other projects in the works, stuff that's more active than the current turn based stuff I do, and I feel that could help guide me.
Comments, ideas, all is appreciated.

Lusty Labyrinth is still (slowly) moving along
General | Posted 2 years agoI've shared some screenshots and animation before, but honestly there's little more to show visually for now. I'm putting about an hour per day into the project, maybe a bit more and it is actually moving along at a decent pace. If this were regular time and I had like 2 full days to commit to it, I wouldn't be far off from a release, but I've been so busy with projects which fell on my lap after I started with LL that I had no opportunity to hunker down on it, nor do I expect things to change until June. It's nothing bad, I'd call it a good curve ball overall, just means that short term LL is taking more time.
But this project does have an advantage, since I do want to make something after it and I'm learning a lot about how I want to structure it, especially concerning character customization. For me, being able to create your own character has always been a big part of what I wanted to do with a porn game, which comes with a degree of planning ahead. Whether or not that project actually materializes is another matter entirely, since I can't do it myself and I could hit the same wall I did 10-15 years ago which led me to stop making porn games altogether, which is to say that I'm an ambitious guy but I can only do programming.
So yeah, missing on LL is combat, the inventory system, upgrading, achievements (which provide experience bonuses) and endless levels. Basically the bigger chunks, most of which are necessary so it'll be a while until anything playable comes out unfortunately. But it's moving forward, so that's something.

Lusty Labyrinth: 50 bugs before phase 2
General | Posted 2 years agoAfter a tumultuous weekend, I'm finally back to work on Lusty Labyrinth and I expect that within the next few days, I'll be done with Phase 1 of a 3 phase plan to port the game over to Unity. Namely, I will have all the code in the game, much of which I'm sure won't be working but the game will build internally. Phase 2 will be more work on the visual side of things, there's a lot of menus to rebuild and I'll be trying to be as efficient as possible during that period. Finally, phase 3 will be a lot of testing and comparing with the Flash version, until I can finally put it back out into the wild for you all to enjoy. Phase 3 is also when I'll be able to submit more images, since right now my time is mostly spent on code.
It's quite the process but I know you're excited to see it, and so am I. I'll be sure to showcase some of the first play once I have it. And while I'm at it, I might also have another something something in store, but we don't talk about that... yet.

Porting games is b***shit
General | Posted 2 years agoOk, it's not, but it's definitely taking quite some time, which I did expect, but since this is my first time doing it, a few of the problems that I'm encountering are things I had not foreseen. For instance, the way character structures work, before they were directly in Flash but now I have to build them a bit differently in Unity, or review how I approach menus, that kind of thing. It gets very technical and honestly it's still the best possible situation to work on a game that's decently simple like this and in 2 engines I'm very familiar with, but I could still do with a bit quicker process.
I'm of course talking about Lusty Labyrinth, and I have made good progress, I'm actually hoping to have the code fully ported by the end of the weekend. However that's only going to be like a third of the work, since after I need to import assets into a hybrid old/new structure and make sure those work, and then figure out all of the issues brought about by the port.
I do have new screenshots, technically but really they're not real gameplay, just quick tests internally. The game will definitely look better than before. I look forward to hearing all of you guys' comments on it once it drops!

What game / gameplay would you like to see a porn version...
General | Posted 2 years agoI'm not necessarily talking about the characters themselves, they could be transformed into sexier and lewder versions but rather just the setting and the way you play the game. Like in Batman Arkham Knight you could be in a brighter city doing all sorts of sexy tasks for the commissioner, fighting using your charms and toys to make the enemies cum, or Animal Crossing where you're building deeper relationships with all the characters and building to opportunities to get it on with them. Or maybe you'd rather have something more separate, like doing tasks which allow you to be closer to one of several character.
I'm curious as to how you guys see adult games, how you enjoy playing them and what kind of experiences you want to play (aside from art style and the likes).

What if Lusty Labyrinth... was in Unity...
General | Posted 2 years agoSo following a lot of the chat here, everyone seems to agree that Lusty Labyrinth is the jam and although my other work might be interesting, that one definitely is. So it got me thinking: how long would it take to convert LL into a Unity project. And the answer is... longer than I thought, but doable.
Thankfully, at first glance I still have all of the assets for Lusty Labyrinth, the locations, characters and also the code. Having all of the code means that I just need to convert Flash into C#, which isn't a complicated job for the most part since both languages are pretty similar. The bigger challenge is that the state machine Flash uses doesn't exist for Unity, so that's something I would need to make myself. It becomes especially complex when comes the monsters, since those are all a bunch of layers for different colors and pieces of armor.
Aside from that main hurdle, I also want to make it in faux 3d, like Octopath Traveler, which isn't a huge challenge (and it'll look significantly better), but it does mean some considerations to get it to work the way I want it to, without having to dump too much time into it. Thankfully I already have some libraries and post processing experience, depth of field, etc. so I'm hoping to have something to show at some point. I was hoping today but I didn't want to manually make a level, so I started importing the level creation system and everything is so interconnected that now I have over 400 bugs to resolve as I make the groundwork for a port.
Will it happen? Hell if I know, but I just spent this evening on it and I think if I spent a few weeks on it (evenings only), I can realistically get somewhere. So we'll see. And if it does, I'll post it to Itch, at the least it'll be a very safe game to put up there without controversy.

I would love to get back into adult gamedev, but...
General | Posted 2 years agoIt's been recently pointed out that my latest game release on FA is almost 7 years old at this point, and that release was thanks to
caesarcub after he surprised me with new assets for the game. The truth is that I never lost my passion for porn games, but moreover I always wanted to make "good" games and following the hurdles I faced on different projects I was doing as a furry, I decided to abandon it as a hobby and try my hand to go pro instead. I've since had my name attached to a few things, but I never lost the interest for porn stuff and in recent months, the desire to "come back" has been growing. That being said, a few realities have been preventing me from doing so.
Time is probably the main factor. I work long hours by necessity and working fewer hours on the money making side would require to make back that money elsewhere. No matter what you do, rent is always do on the first after all, along with other fiscal realities. I'm also concerned because FA no longer accepts games, following the death of Flash and not moving towards supporting Unity in WebGL. That means I would need to host the game elsewhere (probably on Itch.io), which feels like it could open a whole back of worms considering the subject matter. It also would impact my visibility to drive people towards the games. And finally, there's the problem of content. I'm an ambitious guy, I always was trying to make cool stuff and my expectations have always been through the roof, both here and in general. A few months ago, I started a bit of work on an 3d open world porn Sonic game and managed to get a few things in before I moved on (I had navigation, inventory, dialogue system, porn in dialogue, some porn combat system, a quest system and probably a few other things I forget). It was a fun project, but it just felt like I had to get back to focusing on stuff. The reception was also very tepid and I guess it didn't succeed at the time to just create interesting conversations with people.
I don't know where I'm moving from here. Making a living always has to take a priority, but I guess I'm musing about the opportunities and the "what ifs"

The community evolution over the last few years
General | Posted 2 years agoFollowing a series of disappointments on projects I was working on which never came to fruition, I have been mostly inactive here for years. I took that time to build something for myself outside of the furdom, try to do stuff I felt I couldn't really accomplish here, but I always kept an eye on what was being produced and what not.
A few months ago, I tried to get back into the community, baby steps through Discord. What I found through direct contact with people was deeply disappointing to me. I simply couldn't connect with the people there, a lot of them were significantly younger than me and I felt that gap hard, but I also found a lot of furs to be mean and judgmental. From a community that can be ostracized elsewhere, I would expect more respect and caring, and instead I found people punching down and basically being douchebags.
Maybe I hit some bad batches, and maybe I was in the wrong places at the wrong times, but it really made me feel how little I belong among the people here. I still enjoy the art, I think artists are doing a fantastic job and I'm glad there are more opportunities to make some money nowadays than before, but I'm not in my 20s anymore and I don't know that this is an inviting community to people my age who aren't "whimsical" all the time.
It's unfortunate, but I think it's ok that this isn't my place. I guess I just wish people were less mean and self centered in general. And for the decent people out there and I'm sure there are many (and I've met quite a few), continue to be decent. The world needs more people like you.

There should be a day dedicated to commenting on submissions
General | Posted 8 years agoI have a ton of submissions to look at each day in my list, all of them look amazing and offered for free by artists who work their butts off. I think there should be a day where everyone comments on every submission in their list for that day. I think it would be really cool for those artists.
I suggest December 1st, so it doesn't conflict with any other celebration. I'll be celebrating Artist Day, will you?

Sabrina Online has ended
General | Posted 9 years agoI feel like a lot of my journal posts are about stuff that end, but then I only post about stuff I've been into for over decade. Sabrina Online is a webcomic that started in 1996, and posted at a pace of about three or four a month. When I started checking it out, I was looking for porn, and instead I found this amazing heartfelt and funny tale that kept e coming back despite the time between each post (once a month). Please go check it out, it's more than worth your time.

Is Furry Network the new Weasyl?
General | Posted 9 years agoI feel like for 2 weeks everyone was talking about weasyl, and no one changed and now no one cares about weasyl. Following the issues FA had, are people genuinely switching and dropping Weasyl, or will the remain here so the artists will come back?
I'm genuinely curious, I see a lot of people complaining, and half-justifiably so (though FA's true sin isn't security, it's being popular), and I wonder if in a few months we'll be back to the same status quo or if there's going to be an actual change.

General | Posted 9 years agoThe end of WWOEC
General | Posted 10 years agoToday the Internet has lost an institution of cartoon pornography, as WWOEC and WWOEC forums shut down. I have to admit it was a bit of a shock and came quite abruptly. Though it is true that the main site had not been as relevant as it was years ago, the forums were really active and I'm sad to see them go after well over a decade of activity.
It's definitely not the first "institution" of porn I have seen disappear. There's also been the Palsunstar archive, and I believe yiffco.net or something of the sort. But I think this one was most active community. I guess there isn't really much to say about all of this, I would imagine at some point websites like these become a bit of a time and financial burden for the owners. Right now the oldest website I still visit is probably zophar.net, no longer run by Zophar but which has been around since the 90s I believe.
I dunno, I'm just sad to see things disappear, but such is life I guess. Any of you guys still used WWOEC? And what's the oldest website you still visit regularly?

Patreon is pretty terrible
General | Posted 11 years agoAs you might have gathered from the subject line, I have little respect for a majority of Patreon users, though admittingly not all. In the last 24h, I've heard of 2 Patreon projects, one I liked and one I didn't like.
The one I liked were from a group of podcasters, they've been doing it for years, invested in their equipment, invested in setting up events for the fans, and now they're trying to get some money to make even more cool stuff for the fans. I've got massive respect for that, it's not about having someone else take a risk, it's just about making something great even better.
The one I didn't like was an artist who seemingly enjoys making pictures, posts pictures for the fans, and now wants to make money on their hobby. That artist isn't actually offering a plus value for the work, not putting in more effort or investing that money into the project, it's just a "give me money because you like my stuff" approach. As someone who has put work into free projects for all, out of passion, that bothers me. Heck, I've not posted any new games of late simply because I'm working on a large scale personal project in which I'm investing my life savings and all of my free time, avoiding kickstarter as I can. I find it so irresponsible to offload all of the risks to other peopleĀ.
I'm sure I'm one of the rare people thinking like this. I'm not against donating to artists, I'm against donating without an extra effort from that artist and it seems that's really common with crowdfunding. It's really shitty that people want their fans to subsidise their hobby.

You thought the Zelda CSI games were bad?
General | Posted 11 years agoI just discovered "The Town with no name" and it must be shared. This is positively the worst game I have seen all year. and definitely worst looking than the Zelda CDI games.
Please, this must be shared: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbkq0GCRi84

Thank you for all of your answers
General | Posted 11 years agoI've been working a lot lately (well, really, I'm always working a lot), so I couldn't answer everyone on my previous journal, but I wanted to let you know that all of your preferences for the next version of Lusty Labyrinth are being read and
caesarcub and I are figuring out what's realistic and not considering the workload required. More monsters are definitely going to happen, and for the rest we'll see as we go on.
But thank you for your responses!

General | Posted 11 years agoWhat do you want from the next version of Lusty Labyrinth?
General | Posted 11 years agoHey guys,
I'm currently working on Lusty Labyrinth, implementing online saves, leaderboards, adding new monsters and a new location thanks to
caesarcub. I'm also going to look through the comment list of the current version of LL to try to correct bugs and such, but I also want to hear what you guys would like to see beyond what I've named. What features would you find interesting and if it fits within the time I'm willing to put in this, I'll add it to the game.
Looking forward to hearing from you all.
