LEFT FA: Update, Art Sites, Stories, Where to find me, Etc..
Posted 13 years agoFollowing my decision to move away from FA, I have completed the purge of my gallery and set up a new account there for the sole purpose of tracking some artists that don't post there art elsewhere. I will not be posting anything (journals included) on FA excepting the rare but inevitable update on ways to contact me or find my work in other locations.
I currently have galleries on SoFurry (formerly Yiffstar), as well as inkbunny and VCL; although SoFurry and VCL are out of date, they are at the moment the only galleries with actual stuff in them, though I will be adding stuff to IB in the future once other issues IRL pan out. My most complete collection of works is presently on Y* (sofurry). I also have minor presences on furspots, f-list (don't expect to contact me this way) and IRC (Earthshine or MiniMewTaur on furnet, usually... don't expect me to RP with you.) Most future journals will be on livejournal for now, so watch me there if you want to keep up to date on general important goings-on. I may migrate to another journal system at some point in the future, but not for now.
A list of links to these other sites and galleries is at the bottom of this journal.
I have 'completed' the move to California and am getting settled while looking for work. Once I find a job and use the money to procure reliable transportation, I will start making a comeback in my online presence. Until then, expect updates to be scarce and stories essentially nonexistant. The most reliable way to catch me will probably be IM, or twitter ( captainsaicin for general stuff )
That said I've had some fresh ideas circulating in my head, which I can only attribute to the change of pace in my life... lot of new stuff I've never really explored before, and at least some drive to get them written down, though we'll see how that holds up to pressure once I get other things sorted in my life and have the opportunity to actually do something about it.
For those of you less interested in my life and only interested in my crazy writing ideas, here's a little teaser:
In a technologically rich future world where one corporation has mastered bio-synthetic engineering, cutting-edge fully-organic cybernetic organisms created and programmed to perform tasks and 'services' to their owners are a deeply guarded trade secret surrounded by strict government regulation.
It involves nanotech and biotech augmentation, compulsory bondage, brain hacking/mind control, abduction, TF, etc... and a slew of other weird topics and fetishes I've never really explored before.

This Gallery Deleted: Leaving FA for other sites.
Posted 13 years agoI am relocating this gallery to another site, due to unacceptable qualities of the FA administrative staff including but not limited to:
Incompetence, arrogance, immaturity, irresponsibility, discourtesy, cronyism, megalomania, collective narcissism, lack of professionalism, accountability or oversight.
For now I have set up a profile on inkbunny, here: https://inkbunny.net/Earthshine
I will also be creating a gallery on squiggle and possibly some other art sites in the near future. Further information will appear in my journal here as it is available.
Older journal: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3352682/
Thanks to all my watchers and people who have supported me and commented on my work. I'm sorry that it became necessary to remove it all. You are more than welcome to find me on inkbunny or contact me by other means available to you.
So long,
Earth Out.

ATTN WATCHERS, READ THIS JOURNAL
Posted 13 years agoIn wake of a recent spate of abuse from certain FA admins that will not be named, which has affected both me and some of my close friends on this site, it is highly probable I will be packing up and deleting all of my work from this site, and moving to another competing art site.
What started as rude, immature and unprofessional behavior from an admin, including insulting monologue in the public comments on my submissions, culminated into an unjustified suspension of my FA account, as well as the accounts of other people whom were entirely uninvolved. This is just another, more personal example of the many inconsiderate and abusive behaviors from the FA staff toward its users, and as of now, still no apology or recompense has been offered to any of the people affected.
In light of this, the fact that FA staff continue to refuse to own their behavior and make amends, especially to the uninvolved parties that were mistakenly banned from the site without appeal during the fallout from this, and that the FA administration still feels that the best policy for dealing with adversity or disagreements is to suspend people involved and then pretend the problems don't exist, I feel it is no longer appropriate to support this site or its dysfunctional administrative team. If something is not done to set this right soon, I will be purging my gallery and leaving the site, and encouraging the other people involved to do the same.
With apologies to all of my watchers, as well as the people whom I converse with and support on this site, I will provide further details on where to find me at that time.
Finally, should the staff here once again decide to retaliate against justified criticism of their behavior by banning me and deleting this journal, I have cross-posted it here ( http://captainsaicin.livejournal.com/16617.html ), and I would encourage you to link to it as deemed necessary should that happen.
If you want more specific details, you can note me here or on LJ.

On to Better Things
Posted 13 years agowell my job ended today. Long story short, it was a good thing, just in a bad way, and an unfortunate situation to begin with. I have no regrets, only concerns for the future.
I'm going to be moving to California in about a month. Sellign the car and bike, buying a truck, and packing up everything to make for the coast. It will be an entirely new experience for me and I hope to meet new friends and get to know better the ones I have.

So I've been looking through my old stories...
Posted 13 years ago...and I decided I really don't like the Tish and Cass series at all, so I'm probably even less likely to continue it unless I re-write it all first, which I also don't really feel like doing, so... yeah. I may just let it die.
the wording really isn't what I wanted, and it comes out way too forced, probably because I just plain suck with dialogue so much. The feelings are all wrong.

Witcher 2
Posted 14 years ago:|
That's really the best I can say about this game... I tried really hard to give it a chance. I wanted to like it, but I just can't. It's too awful.
I don't even know where to begin at this point. I hated it that much... I've already done my share of ranting on it, and the whole experience just left a foul taste in my mouth. I even managed to injure myself near the end pounding the keyboard in a fit of rage at the interface just REFUSING to do what it was (poorly) designed to do.
A lot of you may recall my positively glowing review of the awesomeness that was The Witcher a short while ago ( http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2538176/ ). If you want to know more about why this game sucks so much that it actually managed to defile my view of the first game by association to its mere existence... feel free to read this thread: http://forums.steampowered.com/foru......php?t=2003465 and especially this post, where I give my final thoughts after giving it a second (and third) chance: http://forums.steampowered.com/foru.....p;postcount=26

Dirt 3.
Posted 14 years agoFinally a Dirt game with lots of actual rally discipline, and good cars from the Group B era.
uses GFWL and won't let you save your progress unless you are signed into their shitty DRM system. DO NOT BUY. I wish I hadn't.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition nutshell review
Posted 14 years agoA very rich and gritty world, involving gameplay and character-defining moral choices combined with tactical combat and complete badassery. It moves a bit slow, especially at first, but thoroughness pays off in the end with the greatest selection of blades, spells, potions and upgrades, and the more involving character dialogues and story segments. The ending was very intense and satisfying, and it sets a very high bar for the sequel, which I'm on to play next.
Total playthrough time: 60+ hours.
Worth a second and third playthrough even, making different choices throughout the game to see how things play out down another path, so relatively high replay value, though the slow start and repetitiveness of some of the fetch quests would make it rather dull to play through immediately after finishing it the first time.
Recommended specs and combat tactics:
Invest minimally in intelligence, but enough to unlock all gathering/flaying/alchemy related talents (skip bombs--they're useless).
Invest minimally in Aard, just enough to grant some stun capability (you'll need it in chapter 1)
Invest in Endurance levels, and heavily in Witcher Group Combat Styles (both Silver and Steel), as at high levels it's the most versatile combat style, and also far and above the most badass (especially Group Silver). Unlock all of the combat style levels (tiers) as soon as you can, and max out group style. Make investments in Strength, Dexterity and Endurance that benefit the Group Style, or that benefit all combat styles.
Spend extra points making moderate to high investments in Strong Style/Strength and the Igni sign. Make smaller to minimal investments in the Fast Style, since most opponents its useful on are dealt with easily in groups with Group Style. You'll still resort to it occasionally, but not often enough to justify a big beef. Ignore all signs except Igni and Aard... inflicting opponents with fear and such doesn't help you kill them any faster!

Posted 14 years agoSo my new job started last week, fairly low paying, even for a gas station, but at least I'm getting hours... perhaps too many hours--I've been asked to work a 12-hr shift tomorrow already, and my feet are already in pretty bad condition from standing on them for 8 hours at a time, when it's been far too long since I've had to do that.
I found out today that this means free unlimited iced lattes... heart palpitations here I come!
Coworkers are nice for the most part... I'll reserve judgment on the guy I'm filling in for tomorrow.
Our store gets a TON of business... I dropped well over 2 grand in sales on my second day.
Now to find a second full-time job, so I can start saving money again.

What if...
Posted 14 years agoWhat if we woke up tomorrow, and 70% of America was athiests? Would the Republicans stop promising to bring religion into politics? or would they turn a complete 180 and start promising to feed Christians to lions if elected?
Personally I'm inclined to think the latter... because it was never about God to begin with. It's about more power and more money, and catering to the Christian majority in this country is just the easiest way to do it... because so many religious people will blindly elect someone who makes hollow claims to push their values.

Posted 14 years ago$430 for a 10-minute doctor's visit?
I went in to ask them about a figuring out a food allergy, and they did nothing but waste my time, saying "it can't be a food allergy because food allergies are rare", and insisting I schedule a bunch of unnecessary blood tests for celiacs and shit which I KNOW I don't have, and I told them flat out I didn't need, and then sure enough they all came back negative. Now they want to slap me with a huge fucking bill for it all, and I'm fucking PISSED. When I checked in, they told me it would all be covered under BCBS and I didn't even have a copay. No way in hell can I afford $430, and no way in hell am I paying them a fucking dime for this.

11 Reasons I like Mass Effect 1 more than Mass Effect 2.
Posted 14 years ago1. No weapon selection, upgrades, or customization in ME2, while ME1 had tons of cool and some unique weapons, armors, amps, and omni-tools to find, encouraging you to explore, upgrade, and re-equip your squad throughout. ME2 did away with all of that. You get a base weapon of a given weapon type, and at some arbitrary point in the game you get one roughly equivalent alternative that either trades inaccuracy or annoying handling characteristics for power, or vice-versa.
2. Special ammo types are "powers" now. That's right, you "learn" to magically transform the bullets into incendiary or armor-piercing shells as they leave your gun. No, you can't use the same ones as your squadmates. If you level the ammo type "power" up enough, you can unlock a "squad ammo" variety, but don't you ever ever ever EVER DARE use it, or your squad mates will spend eternity fighting over the ammo type to use, endlessly swapping it back and forth and never actually spending any time using other powers or shooting things.
3. Only 3 "powers" per specialization class. Period. Two, if you don't do the loyalty quest. Most powers are lame, and you don't get to pick and choose which to unlock, because of the grossly simplified squad points system, you'll end up with the same exact powers every time, only possibly with maxing out the strength of them coming in a different order. No variance.
4. The Normandy SV1 was way cooler than the Normandy SV2. I don't care what anyone else thinks. SV1 was bitchin'. Also, I kinda missed the Mako, though I didn't miss all the samey rough terrain on every fucking planetoid ever.
5. DLC. Seriously. Fuck you, EA.
6. Shitty half-assed overpriced DLC, and exclusive DLC. Yes it's half-assed, only adding a couple things each, and most of it is mostly useless. The squad member packs had potential, but even those were half-assed. You can tell it's half-assed because of the greater number of bugs in DLC levels than vanilla ones, and the fact that the new squad members don't even have any fucking dialogue options. Seriously. Even the goddamn mess hall cook has dialogue options. Then there's the exclusive DLC, which is basically just a big "fuck you" to all of the gamers out there, by making a game that you can't possibly own legitimately in a complete version.
7. Auto-regenerating health, no healing.
8. No grenades. You get a "heavy weapon" which is mostly a useless gimmick, and still doesn't do any respectable amount of damage to anything, while having impossible to find ammo, and needing to be cycled to in your weapon selection to use.
9. Ammo. Now, I'm all for HAVING ammo limitations in games, and the need to reload, but the ME2 excuse for it was just plain stupid, and didn't make any sense whatsoever. Ammo comes as "thermal clips", which are universal across all weapon types... but then for some reason, each weapon has its own frightfully small ammo pool anyway, forcing you to switch weapons at least once per engagement because you run out of universal ammo for one, but not another. I have an idea, why not take the ammo from the pistol bandoleer and use it in your shotgun? it's the same fucking cartridge, right? I mean, when you pick it up, does which bandoleer you put it in really matter? Furthermore, the whole "thermal clip" concept is silly. The game is implying that you can make an assault rifle that has a single energy source and a single ordnance source that will last forever, and yet the power output is enough to generate sufficient waste heat to turn it red-hot after three or four shots... yeah, right. Also, if these "thermal clips" really do work as advertised, wouldn't ejecting a clip early before it's been filled be wasting those last few shots you had? I mean it's pretty clear that the clips never ever cool off again to be re-used, they're just wasted. Instead, the excess capacity gets magically transferred to future fractional clips, somehow. Yeah, it doesn't make any sense. Fuck you.
10. Consolitis. The controls suck, and do that stupid thing EA console to PC ports are notorious for, where the on-screen prompts for ad-hoc actions tell you to press the wrong key if you've re-mapped them. No, they don't say "press the melee key" they say "press F", meaning "Press whatever key is mapped to whatever action we originally had F mapped to, but we're not going to tell you what that was because it would make it too easy." Oh, and the default controls are stupid and unintuitive and should never be used... very clearly set by someone who has no idea how to PC gaming.
10.5. The interact key is the same as the sprint key is the same as the "jump" key.... no you can't have sprint be shift and f be interact, it has to be one or the other for both. No jumping btw unless you're at a "jumpable" barricade. ankle-high ledges are impassable. You get to walk the long way around. Ha-ha, sucks to be you.
11. There is no "I don't trust/like/work-for/suck-the-illusive-man's-cock-for Cerberus" dialogue option. Get used to it. Everybody hates you now because you betrayed the Alliance for Cerberus, only you didn't, but you're too fucking dense to just set the record straight. Clearly you need to invest more points in Charm/Intimidate charisma... oh wait, you can't, because they took that out, too.
Did I forget anything?
As for things I like about ME2... the story and visuals are (still) pretty good (not really an improvement there, though), you didn't have to carry untrained weapons with you and switch through them to get to the ones you could use, and the renegade interrupts are pretty cool... but, tbh, that's about it. I liked ME1 better in just about every other way.
No, they don't say "press the melee key" they say "press F", meaning "Press whatever key is mapped to whatever action we originally had F mapped to, but we're not going to tell you what that was because it would make it too easy." Posted 14 years agoI'd just like to remind people that I am on twitter now, and the majority of news, links, and political stuff will be on there, rather than on my FA journal, so if you want to hear any of that, watch me there. Real important stuff will still be posted on FA, but this is to cut down on unnecessary journal spam.

"Man, this duopoly bullshit is going to ruin the smartphone market. If this AT&T T-Mobile merger is allowed to go through, I will have lost all faith in the government."
"Yeah man, it's total bullshit... this is what happens when the government tries to regulate things. If they didn't try to break up Bell in the first place, none of this would have happened."
". . ."
Just... what do you even say to that? "No, I'm sorry, but you're a moron."? These fucking republicans are so fucking set in their belief that "free market can do no wrong" and "government can do no right" that they actually think deregulating business will END monopolies and not CREATE them. I mean seriously, they even think that a government decision explicitly to DISSOLVE a monopoly is somehow responsible for CREATING that monopoly in the first place. WTF!? Are people REALLY THAT DUMB!? Is 50% of the entire goddamn country voting republican just because they are SO INCREDIBLY STUPID that the fact that republican policies are completely counter to their own interest doesn't even occur to them?
"Acme corp is using its monopoly power to engage in predatory practices on consumers.--deregulate! that'll fix'r!"
"Working class Americans are fighting to make ends meet--end taxes on big businesses and millionaires! then the poor multibillion dollar businesses that create jobs can afford to pay them more! Then construct a multi-trillion-dollar border wall to keep the mexicans out"
"I know it'll work because Fox News (sponsored by Acme corp) told me so!"
First of all, since the government isn't forcing companies to merge and form monopolies, then given the fact that it's happening, it stands to reason that the companies WANT to form the monopolies. If the companies WANT to form monopolies, then removing the regulations that make it more difficult for them to do so WILL NOT SOMEHOW HAVE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT. See? Logic! It works!
Secondly, Workers aren't poor because the businesses can't afford to pay them. Just look at Wal-Mart. They're fucking ROLLING in cash. If Wal-Mart corporation were to DOUBLE the amount of money they pay their employees, and start providing benefits like healthcare and dental, they'd STILL be turning a profit. The reason Wal-Mart employees are broke, is because the company is FUCKING GREEDY and wants to keep all the money it makes to itself to increase its bottom line. If you stop taxing them, all they're going to do with all that money they save is keep it to themselves for their bottom line, because we've already established that bottom line is more important to them than their workers. It's not fucking rocket science. If you want the employees to see any money, you need to increase the minimum wage and make it ILLEGAL for Wal-Mart to pay them as little as it does... and while you're at it, tax the fuck out of the Waltons, because they can fucking afford it, and yet due to all of the capital gains loopholes, they're probably paying a lower percentage of their incomes on taxes than the average hard-working American. Use that money you get from taxing them to improve medical coverage for the people who can't afford it, like the Wal-Mart employees, because the company is NEVER going to provide them with the benefits they need so long as they are not legally obligated to do so.
Third, where exactly do you think the government is going to get the money to build a fucking fortress across the mexican border, if they do as you suggest and stop collecting taxes from everyone? You can't have your tax exemption and eat it too--it doesn't work that way! You want the government to do everything for you, and yet not hold you accountable for anything? Bullshit! "I don't want to pay taxes or obey regulation, but I want you to improve my roads and public transportation and keep me safe and create jobs!" :V

Update on the Move...
Posted 14 years agoHeyo! So, I finally got moved... it's bee a fun, crazy and hectic few days. I still have a lot to do before I'm settled, and more than 24 hours after setting up my bed at the new house, I still haven't begun unpacking my computer... but let's start from the beginning.
Saturday was final packing day. I already had my laundry and closet cleaned out from the week before, and tools and stuff gathered up from all around the house and garage. Saturday I boxed everything else and loaded it into the closet. It took about half an hour to break down my bed, and then 2 hours to pack up m computer at the end.
I did not sleep well... Saturday night... got maybe 4 hours of sleep, supplemented with plenty of energy drink in the AM. Sunday morning I got up at 9, and was on the road on my motorcycle by 10, arriving in Brooklyn Park at the new house with just enough time to set up my laptop and put a cover on my motorcycle before my mom arrived to drive me back to St. Cloud to pick up my car and belongings. Being Mother's Day, our plan for a simple lunch together very quickly got derailed into waiting at Olive Garden for my little brother and my mom's new friend to arrive... and then waiting even longer for a table and food. There was good food, and I was happy to see my brother again and have a chance to chat with him and one of his friends that had tagged along, but it did set me back about 2 hours on my moving schedule. Mom's friend brought a full size van to haul stuff in, so we left my mom's Forester at the restaurant and drove up to St. Cloud in that.
Just as we were getting off the freeway, the serpentine belt tensioner of the van broke, and we rushed to the house without power steering while the engine overheated... spent another hour or so under the hood of the van and on the phone trying to find a store somewhere that was open on Mother's Day and had the part we needed. Thankfully we found the part, and
jolyzjackal was able to replace it, and we were able to load the van up and drive it back.
We got back to the new house in Brooklyn Park and finished unloading stuff at around 9 PM. One of my new roommates was able to help me get my bed set up again, saving a lot of time there, but it turns out setting up the computer was not going to happen. I had known that the new room did not have grounded outlets, and had come prepared with grounded outlets to install, allowing me to plug in all my extension cords, power strips, and computer... what I did not know, was that the house lacked any grounding whatsoever to ground the new outlets to. The electrical conduits was plastic, which seemed very odd for a house more than 40 years old, so I couldn't ground them to the conduit, either. The builders of the house seemed determined to do as many weird new things with the electrical as they could, as even the lightswitches were nonstandard--they operated a 12v DC relay to a circuit box in the basement which then individually rerouted power to the light fixtures in the house when the switches were pressed. Overall, new house is an electrical catastrophe, and I don't trust any of the wiring, so, tomorrow, I'm going to go get some new GFCI outlets and wire the ground to the neutral lines, and should hopefully (knock on wood) have my computer set up by tomorrow night.
As for today, I managed to get a wireless signal from a house across the river using my cantenna, and leech internet off of them until the homeowner could get around to installing my router. There's some inconvenience here with the fact that the circuit breaker, modem, router, et. al., are in his room, so unfortunately doing the electrical work will require more than his blessing, and should we have any problems with the modem or router we'll need to wait on him to reset it.
As of now, I've finished unpacking my clothes and closets, setting up the router and wireless networks, setting up the wireless network printer and NAS, and fixing up one of my housemates' computers and configuring it for network printing and backups.
The housemates here seem cool. One was a long career type with 15 years at corporate before the recession hit, and now he's been working at walmart for 2 years... he's old enough to be my dad, but fairly laid back and progressive, and likes having me around to share beer, music and technology resources. The other is closer to my age, haven't talked with him much other than to set up the wireless network so he can connect his macbook, as he hasn't been around a lot. The homeowner is an aircraft mechanic, and currently watching O'Reilly in the livingroom... he starts tons of home projects but takes his time in finishing them, so it can be like pulling teeth to get certain things (like the electrical) fixed. He's pretty alright, though, and I suspect we'll get along fine once the hassle of settling in has passed.
I hope to have all of the unpacking done by Wednesday night, which will give me 2 days to get rolling on the job search here. I've already secured some resources for that, and the market here looks much better, as does the workforce center. Saturday, I'll be at the
MNFurs picnic, though I won't be bringing anything this year (
ottah notwithstanding, hopefully), since I'm effectively flat broke after that move.

2 days to move.
Posted 14 years ago...and it can not come soon enough. I have reached the point now at which the ONLY thing preventing me from losing my calm and going postal on these disgraceful insufferable fucksticks is being able to count down the hours before I am out of this house for good.
I HAVE HAD IT.
I am filing the police report tomorrow, and by Saturday I should have everything of mine packed up and ready to be loaded in a trailer.
With near complete certainty I will never see my $100 logitech racing wheel or electrical tools again, but I'm cutting my losses and I'm out of here. It's going to between Geno, Raven, and the police from now on, and there will be a restraining order to ensure it stays that way. MAYBE my lawyer, if I can ever reach him.
