Hyena Sanctuary Update
Posted 13 years agoSo we found a great piece of property. The limiting factors for finding property are what counties we can be in and if they're commutable to Crocuta's job. We are down to only 2 counties. We found a property in one county that we could put the sanctuary in (had a house and, well and county water plus flat clear area for enclosures), then the parcel went pending. The offer got pulled a month later because the buyers couldn't get financing. It's back up for grabs and we're racing against the current buyers. Who can get financing first? D:
Once we secure a property (not going to say it's this one, could be another one), then it's time to raise money to get enclosures. The sanctuary is required to have minimum double fencing to USDA standards. Our enclosures are going to have room for the hyenas to stretch their legs, so fencing costs are going to be super high. Here's what it boils down to:
13 hyenas
8 Enclosures (plus a secondary enclosure)
5 months to do this in.
We have 5 months to scramble this together.... D: We've already had to jump through hoops at the bank and funding to get the property still isn't secure.
How much do we need? It depends. Fencing materials alone (this does not include labor, delivery, etc) are around $40K Plus we'll need a concrete footing around the fencing. I could see if a company can donate materials by then, but we're running against the clock. We might not have our non-profit for a while and companies might not be willing to donate if you don't have the sure-fire nonprofit status.
Here's my plant of action:
Get property
Work on squiring non-profit status.
Make website that shows pictures of the hyenas future homes. Try to raise funds.... try to get fencing put up in a very short amount of time....
Some how acquire a truck that can haul an enclosed stock/horse trailer (has to be all enclosed and have A/C).
Go get hyenas in May.
I have a few ideas for fund raisers, they're long shots so the payout can be great, but the chances of it happening are small. I usually do good with long shots but there's 13 hyenas in the balance here.
Food and daily operating costs have already been negotiated. The upkeep for the hyenas will be very little. The enclosures are designed to be low-maintenance.

Friday is Shopping Adventure Day!
Posted 13 years agoFor me at least. This Friday I'm buying some kitchen cabinets and I can't wait! Some of you know, my house does not have wall cabinets in the kitchen, just the floor cabinets. Crocuta and myself bought the house (via mortgage) Thanksgiving 2010 and it did not come with upper kitchen cabinets. The house was a foreclosure (it was 100 feet underwater and I think the owners walked away from it) and the previous owners took the cabinets. I'm very happy they didn't put cement down the pipes.
At any rate, no wall cabinets since January 2011 (when I moved), When I moved in, I had to buy appliances, so that's where my money went to. Bought them on an amazing Black Friday deal and on the Sears Card, so I could pay them off over time. I decided to bite the bullet after a year and a half and finally get them (the cabinets). The new door on my bedroom inspired me (it was the formal living room), so time for cabinets, time to make this house really seem like my home. Next year it will be new roof (if I can get the money for it), as my current roof is on it's last leg.
Going to be going to Chinese home improvement shops and hoping they'll haggle with me (I love to haggle and I'm on a very strict budget). Hopefully I can also buy a base cabinet for the one they took on the end and some butcher block counter top for that too.
After adventures in home improvement shopping, going to be going to Forbidden Island Tiki bar. Love my Tiki bars <3
FYI, my house decently small (1300 SF), I'm finally getting things together, improving on my skills, people are noticing and it feels amazing. So I'm a bit of a late-bloomer compared to my sister, but better late than never.

Dentist Tiem!
Posted 13 years agoAs some of you know, yesterday was my first round of dental work in a many part series. I had some tooth decay. I had a poor diet a few (some would say several) years ago, lack of vitamins. Plus I couldn't afford to see the dentist for several years (severe lack of money and no insurance). That and my entire mom and her entire side of the family had horrid tooth problems. My teeth were hurting me and I didn't want things to get any worse. At one point for a week I couldn't chew on any side of the mouth and just took super tiny bites to swallow. Then I stared upping the calcium and potassium in my diet and used a variety of mouth washes 3 times a day and things started to feel better. However, I knew it was time to see the dentist.
I bought some dental insurance (Delta Dental, it's an HMO) through Costco and selected a dentist on their list that I cross-referenced on yelp. Why an HMO? I knew that I needed a fair bit of work done and most PPO's have a $2500 limit. The insurance I got had no limit, but a decent out of of pocket cost (but was around the same price as going to the dental school). My initial exam was in April. They took many x-rays. They had this cool machine that circles around your head. I've had that before, but this one was much newer and faster. Plus a claw came down and grabbed my head to keep it still, I thought that was pretty cool.
The dentist does a full exam and pocket chart of my teeth and gums. The office tally's up what I need and gives me a itemized list with my costs before and after insurance. My out of pocket cost after insurance is $6000. Combine this with Hippo's $6500 bill that I'm still paying off, student loans, money for the next year is going to be uber tight, even if I get many commissions (which I'll have to get to pay this off). Hippo is going to be 10 years young on Monday (5/7), and he's worth every cent.
I could have gone to a dental school. However, the cost would not have been that much less that my insurance and it would have taken 3-4 times as longer. At a school, students are learning and you need to wait for the teacher to check everything. It was worth it to me to spend the extra $150 more per crown and get it done in the same day, no coming back twice, molds, temp crowns, painful injections twice. Just get it done. Fillings are the same price as the dental school through my insurance and I pay less for cleanings, deep cleanings and xrays. In case you're wondering, the insurance costs me $90 a year through Costco, so it's pretty affordable.
Speaking of crowns, most of my teeth will have partial crowns on them. Hence why the bill is $6000. The dentist that I'm seeing in Pleasant Hill has an onsite CAD/CAM machine. They take pictures of your tooth before drilling and after drilling and you can watch your crown being made on site! It's pretty cool. You get your ceramic crown in one day, no impressions, no temps, done and done. Because most of my teeth need partial crowns, the office was awesome and gave me a discount on them, cheaper than what I would pay for through my insurance. I could cheap out and go for full metal crowns, but because most of my teeth need them, I would have had a mostly metal smile. No thanks. Also, the dentist shaves away more of the tooth with a full crown than a partial. Partial crown saves more of the tooth.
Getting back to yesterday, what was suppose to be a 2 hour visit turned into 4.5 hours. Things took a lot longer than expected, and the one tooth needed more work, but luckily none of my teeth need a root canal, whew! Yesterday was my 2 worst offender teeth. Lots of lidocaine injections since they were teeth 18 and 31 and it took longer than expected.
This dentist was a lot better than my old dentist in Ohio. The analgesics he used were a lot better than crappy benzocaine, and after giving the lidocaine injections, he waited until they took full effect. My old dentist used Novacaine and started drilling right away before anything was numb enough. Plus this guy and his assistant were really cool and talked to me. My old dentist never did that.
TL:DR Long day at dentist. Did the 1st out of 7 visits. Jaw is sore from being open for 4 hours. Want to save my teeth. $6000 is worth saving my teeth. Don't want to be 30 and have dentures and the bone loss in your jaw that comes from not having teeth. If I was 40, I'd look 65 then. Saving bone structure is worth being in debt for a while to me.

Thin (more like a normal weight) for summer!
Posted 13 years agoMy goal is to be 125 lbs for summer. I'm 135 right now, so I need to shave off that last 10 lbs. My goal is to look decent in a swim suit or a tight shirt and not have my stomach or thighs jiggle as much. 135 is still a normal weight for my height (I'm 5'5") but I think I would be happier with my body at 125. No, I'm not fishing for compliments, just publicly stating my goals.
At 125 would put my weight loss at the 55 lbs mark. Fifty-five pounds! That's like a bag of pigeon feed and a bag of sugar being strapped to my midsection. Or, I suppose a 55 lb bag of dog food or rice. This time last year I was a 180 lb fatty. I'll probably put padding in my fursuit so my head doesn't look giant.

Fun Facts about me!
Posted 13 years agoSome one I watch posted some facts about them, so why not post some facts about me:
1) I have very poor and very good eye sight. I am horribly nearsighted and I have an atrocious astigmatism. I cannot see very well in the dark, and so I don't drive when it gets dark. However, I have amazing microscopic vision and can see much more detail up close than most people (that's the good eye sight part). My prescription is -8.5, not sure what the vision on that is, etc, 20/400
2) I have all my organs intact. Weee.
3) I only have 24 teeth. I had 8 extractions when I was 12 (too many teeth in my mouth, not because they were rotted) and my wisdom teeth removed. I have 24 now.
4) I'm a south-paw
5) My birth certificate lists what the nearest county hospital was, but it does not list "place of birth", like a city. It just says, "en route". I wasn't born in the hospital, and that's what was put on the certificate.
6) I'm very allergic to carrots of all things. Pretty much my one allergy. I've had other allergies like dairy come and go due to hormonal changes, but carrots has stuck with me now for some time.

FC Review
Posted 13 years agoSo FC has come and gone. I kept wondering why not that many people talked to me during the con, I thought "maybe I am a creeper after all D: ?". People kept asking me "what's wrong?" through out. I just finally sunk in after a few days. I've now come to realize that I look strangely pissed off or very tired when I am relaxed. So if you see me and I'm alone, and I look sleepy or pissed off, I'm more than likely not. If I am pissed off or tired I go back to my room.
I also lost weight so I guess not that many people recognized me either, but I am often too shy to approach people since I don't want to be that person that the other people say, "OMG, she was such a creeper, why wouldn't she leave us alone!? D: " I could do the easy thing of "Hey, I really like your work" and run off but then it's like "who cares". Not really shy, because I do not get shy, I get conflicted and then don't do anything.
I need a sign to wear around my neck that says, "I'm not pissed off or sleepy, this is my relaxed face, plz talk to me, thx"

Can I take a picture of ya:
Sure. Just ask first.
Anything to add:
I can be very clumsy and don't walk, but more or less stumble around. Sometimes I'm not paying attention so if you say my name and I don't respond, then I didn't hear you.

Single
How old are you:
close to 30, ehhhhhh.... :/
How many Fursuits are you going to bring/wear:
Maybe one? My older suit that I made in just before FC in 2009 is now way too big on me, so I'm hoping to make a new suit by FC, but I have 3 heads and a set of feet paws to finish up for some patient clients before then, so we'll see. Maybe no fursuit *shugs*.
Attending parties:
I hope so.
Do you drink:
Oh yes.
Do you smoke:
just socially on the occasion.
Can I buy you a drink:
Sure, you can even buy me more if you want.
Are you attending any panels:
Birds, probably Lace Ikegawa's panel maybe others if they seem interesting to me.
Rules of engagement (physical Contact out of Suit):
Say hi and we'll go from there.
What's the best way to find you:
look around.
Do you do trades:
maybe, depends what the trade is all about
Can I hug or snuggle with you:
perhaps?
How tall are you:
5'5"
If I see you, how should i get your attention:
say, "hey.... yoooouuuu" or HG or hyena or something. If I hear you I'll look around, might not be paying attention and not hear you though.
Can I take a picture of ya:
Sure. Just ask first.
Anything to add:
I can be very clumsy and don't walk, but more or less stumble around. Sometimes I'm not paying attention so if you say my name and I don't respond, then I didn't hear you.
Commission Updates and Statuses
Posted 13 years agoA big thank you to all my current customers waiting on suits!
I wrote a long a verbose journal but my computer crashed and it got deleted D:
In short: My dog Hippo got GDV (gastric torsion). I caught it in time and rushed him to an emergency hospital (at 1:30 am) and he was able to get the life-saving surgery. There were some ups and downs, but he gets his staples out tomorrow (in 4 hours actually), Or should get them out tomorrow. Total running bill is $6000. He's over 100 lbs and is older. Emergency fees, fluids, a trocar to get him stabilized to get to the bigger hospital, x-rays (he had a total of 6 in 3 days), tons of pain medication, surgery, anesthesia, full blood chemistry profiles, antibiotics (Clavamox alone was $200), more fluids, ICU care, etc. This past 10 days has been a constant schedule of small feedings, pills, etc.
Suit updates: it's been a loong and longly overdue wait. I've made most everything from scratch, paw pads, claws, jaw sets, etc. Paw pads, jaw sets, claws and horns come in a multitude of colors, some are glow in the dark and some are UV reactive. :D
I've perfected techniques about jaws with a bite for customers. These jaws have a bite to them (and can snap) and can be un-hinged for emergency repairs or other endevours. This took a bunch of time to figure out to get it right. But I'm very happy with the end result.
New realistic heads. New realistic heads look pretty sharp, very detailed and realistic. There was a big extursion (just between myself and myself) to find a adhesive to bond the jaw sets to the heads. No adhesives were working, it was very frustrating. I found one (which really isn't an adhesive at all actually, but bonds to the resins).
Airbrushing! I now offer airbrushing. I invested in a nice airbrushing set up lately. I do not consider it a short-cut as airbrushing some markings make them look more realistic than sewing. Not all pigments are created equal. I often mix my own which are washable when dried and will last for years. Many colors are available and I've been experimenting with this a lot lately. Airbrushing can give great highlights and details on suits.
Tiny Feets. It's what I call them. They're a small realistic hind paw you can walk around on your hind toes (a big 180 from my older giant toony style paws). The cast latex pad sheets are from Running Wolf productions and at this point are the only thing I outsource.
Whew, so that's that. FINALLY finishing up some heads now!

My Brain and my Ovaries
Posted 14 years agoSo I went to the girly doctor yesterday spur of the moment because they had an opening. I've never been to that doctor before, my old one was in Hayward, a good 60 miles away from where I live now. I moved back in December/January 2011. Anyway, I get there for an exam and hoping to get my birth control pills refilled. I fill out patient history. I'm extremely healthy, just get migraines often and have had them for around a decade now. I get tunnel vision, or lack of vision on one side, extreme pressure on my eyes, neasuea, seeing starts, can't be around light and sound, all of that.
Currently, I am on Lutera for birth control pills. When I was on Ortho Novium and Levora, my migraines got way worse and happened every other day. I was taking migraine medication like mad and in pain for a good 5 months. I switched to Lutera and many of them went away. I change my diet, lost weight and they became even less. I get them about every 2 weeks now (better than every night).
So at the doctor, I get an exam and then I was told because of my migraines, I can't be on pills anymore. No pills, no ring, no depo (but depo decreases bone mass, so never wanted it). The estrogen puts me at a pretty high risk of stroke, brain swelling, neurological damage with the type of migraines I get. I was pretty bummed about it. The only options I have left are an IUD (intro-uterine device) or an implant in the arm called Implanon. I chose the Implanon implant because it was less invasive than going into your cervix with a punch saw. The good news is the implant is only done every 3 years. No remembering to take pills ever again.
I call the doctor next week to make an appt to get the implant, since they are booked solid for several weeks. I should gain any weight on the implant. I've worked my tail off to lose over 30 lbs, don't want to gain any of it back. Periods may be constant/irregular for the first 6 months, but worth it not to remember to take a pill every single day.
P.S. got my annual STD testing and I'm negative for everything, yay.

Need a new suit!
Posted 14 years agoFor me! I've lost over 30 lbs. Since 2008 I gained 30 lbs. I've lost it all going low-carb, plus 2 more lbs, and hopefully a few more to look lean and mean. The fursuit I made the night before FC 2009 is huge on me. The arms and legs are still the same, but the middle (where I tend to hold the vast majority of my weight) is huge. I can wear my original body suit, but that one was the first one I made, and the fur doesn't match the head (different mane color, different dye lots).
I'll be making myself a new, realistic hyena suit for FC 2012. So I won't be fursuiting really until I have a new suit, which might be a few months, until I get my current list done and have some spare time. Maybe in October, or November, or even December, who knows.
Back to the weight loss, I saw the movie "fat-head" (can watch it on netfllix streaming) and it changed my life. I've lost over 30 lbs since September 2010 (lost 20 lbs), but gained 10 lbs back after FC 2011. Since I started my low-carb lifestyle since early May. I've lost over 20 lbs. No diet pills, just eating more meat and fat and trying to avoid grain, artificial sugars and grain derived products.

Groups of 4 Meme
Posted 14 years agoThis seemed fun. Doing meme's is easier than finding things to bitch about in a journal.
Four Jobs I've Had
-Vet Tech/surgical nurse- I held this position for the longest, 8 years.
Proof Reader and Copy Writer- this was for a college internship. I was a good copy writer and most of my crap wound its way to trade magazines. Although I don't consider it to be my BEST by far because I did what I was told to by the company. We weren't allowed to suggest what might of worked (which you imagine that's what you hire and ad agency for). We were just suppose to do what the company wanted.
-Yard Mower- my first job. I moved lawns around the neighborhood for cash because at the age of 10 it was time to find a job because my parents were tired of buying me shit. I did his for a couple of years.
-Renaissance Faires- my second job. No, I'm not in SCA, I don't really care about that. I worked at a local renni faire for two summers in a row before it went bankrupt and went to shambles. It was here that I realized I was very good at improv, calming hawks and falcons, and very terrible at traditional theater acting.
-Fur Suit Maker: Sad to sad I've only had 4 jobs. :/
Four Movies I Can Watch Over And Over
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Fight Club
- Terminator and Terminator 2
- Lord of the Rings (they're so long, you can watch all 3 movies over and still find stuff).

Four Of My Favorite Dishes

Four Sites I Visit Daily
- Twitter
- FA
- facebook

Birthday Post
Posted 14 years agoI just ate this rich butter cream icing cake whilst watching Cake Boss. I couldn't even finish the slice I had. So here's what I did earlier for my 27th circumlocution around the sun:
Went to SF
Went to Body Manipulations Studios
Got my nipples pierced (12g)
Got a smoothie in the Castro
Went to the north side of downtown and played with some parrot friends (Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill). My boobs felt like fire, so naturally only parrots could cheer them up.
This guy landed on my head and decided to hang around and talk to me for a good 5-10 minutes.

WHEW!
Posted 14 years agoJust spent nearly 4 hours cleaning all the rat cages and doing some yard work. I am hungry now.
I need a best friend
Posted 14 years agoI need a local girl who can be my best friend. I haven't had a best friend since I was 10. It would be nice if there was someone I could go off on crazy adventures with on the weekends. Good luck finding that in the SF Bay Area.
I can dream, can't I?

Back Online
Posted 14 years agoAfter a long hiatus from FA and then a 6 week break from the internet while I was moving, I'm back. ATT (the only ISP option besides dialup) made me wait a few extra weeks before getting online. Going to be posting some overdue and new suit pictures here soon. Also have been working on techniques for realistic suits.
Life has certainly had it's bumps for me lately, but I'm hanging in there the best I can. My goal for 2011 is to get cracking on suits: finish up my commission queue, and then open up for new takers (will be freed up by March, 2011).
Regular suits (toony and semi-toony) will still start at $1000
Realistic suits will start at $1200
Murrsuit options are always available
My mission statement is to make quality fursuits at affordable prices. No price hikes in 2011 (despite higher costs of materials)!

200 Watchers!
Posted 15 years agoSure I don't have 3000K watchers, but I suppose 200 is better than none. I wonder what it feels like to be that popufur amongst perverts like me.
What it costs to make YOUR fursuit.
Posted 15 years agoI've been wanting to make this list for a white now (Soki Two-Paw inspired me to finally do it) to show people what it costs to make a fursuit. Prices listed below are based on a full suit.
Fur: $100-300 (depending on the fur type and how big the person is, this prices DOES NOT INCLUDE NFT price fur).
Balaclava: $12
Foam: $28-160 (depending if padding is needed and what type of foam the customer wants)
Shoes: $10-30 (again, depending on the customer's needs.
Thread: $12-20
Polyfill (if needed): $5-15
Elastic: $1
Plastic: $2
Resin (for claws if needed): $28
Latex: $12-42 (depending if they customer wants latex bottoms on their feet or not)
Paint: $5
Eye Material: $1-10
Clays (for teeth and noses): $5
High Temp Glue: I buy glue in 30# cases at a time): $8
Super 90: $15
Duck Tape: $5 (on average to put a DTD back together and for head patterning).
Zippers: $12 (I put zippers in my feet too).
So this is the direct cost of material. This doesn't include overhead, like machine repairs, electricity, time to make the patterns, materials to make the patterns, that sort of stuff. Also the time spend shopping, the gas it takes to get there (most of the time I travel down to LA to get supplies).
Minimum direct cost to a suit costs about $300. It usually costs me about $300-500. A good rule of thumb is the price of fur X 3 to get your cost of making a suit.

Raw Feed Dogs
Posted 16 years agoI've been feeding the dogs raw food lately (for the past week). They're on Canidae dry dog food which runs about $1/ lb. If you can get it on sale at Pet Food Depot (a feed store in Palo Alto), you can get a 35 lb bag for $32 (including tax). We had a coupon for a feed store in San Jose that sold it. Our 44 lb bag cost us $39.50 (plus tax). We also got a free pound of dog biscuits to seal the deal! Lion Food Center (an all Asian market) sells meat for $ 0.89-1.40/lb. It's not USDA Prime, or even Choice, but that's A-OK for dogs (since they can digest raw meat better than we can). In the Midwest, ground turkey is SUPER cheap, you can get it for 70 cents a pound (they come in plastic sleeves that conveniently weigh a pound each) at Save-a-lot. So far, the Asian markets have the cheapest meat. If you want Choice meat, Dittmars (a butcher in Mountain View) carries pork shoulder for $1.99/lb and cheap beef liver and heart ($3-4/lb).
Tonight Kody and Diablo (my dog) got ground beef and egg and white fish fillets. Nibbles got his first chicken quarter. Nibbles is only 50 lbs, so a pound of chicken is just fine for him (feed 2-3% of your dog's body weight). The dogs have been eating better than I have :O
I mix the raw beef, fish and egg in with a ration of kibble. Some advise not to do this and just feed either raw meat or kibble for the day because kibble takes longer to digest than raw meat, Then again, bones also take longer to digest than the raw meat. My dogs don't have a problem with raw mixed in with kibble. Kody the malamute isn't the brightest bulb in the box and chokes on EVERYTHING (even SOFT treats), so he can't have bones. Diablo broke a tooth last year chewing on a bone, so those guys don't get any raw bones and get some kibble substituted in their diet for vitamins and minerals. I may consider giving Diablo raw chicken bones since it's the softest bone. Never feed your guys cooked bones, especially cooked chicken since they will splinter and cut your dog's intestines. Raw is fine though (unless they're dumb and choke on it).
Long story short, much money is saved since I'm not given the dogs canned food and have instead substituted it for raw. The dogs are eating better for cheaper. Everyone wins!
