Getting older is noticing more and more ∞ symbols
Posted a year agoHeard the bad news last night about the passing of SpottedSqueak/TaoOfForest. It seems like so many more users on this site are getting that infamous infinity symbol... I didn't know Forest much, tho I did get a commission from them. I'd hoped to thank them in person one day (call me old fashioned. I did thank them digitally of course) but now... Well.

The gameplay is still pretty much the same, but damn if that little bit of paint (Ok, a LOT of paint. High-Def graphics and music don't grow on trees) just doesn't bring me back.

Game Review: Little Inferno (Spoilers)
Posted 12 years agoIf you didn't see the title, there be spoilers down below. I won't be bracketing it off or anything, so read at your own risk.
So I like to snag cheap games, thus I like the Humble Bundle. In the most recent iteration, there's a game called Little Inferno, by Tomorrow Corporation. I fired it up one evening after downloading it onto my laptop, and started playing. At first, it seems like one of those timewaster games you find on flash sites where you just need to keep making combos to progress, and anything else inbetween is just fun stuff. Who the hell is this sending me messages? Crazy person must not have anything better to do... so you keep making combos and just having a fun time buying items only to have them partake in a post-purchase candescence (thank you GLaDOS) Hehe, the spiders keep you busy while you wait for things to arrive... it's like a loading minigame. Oh, the crazy bitch wants something. Here you go, don't burn it all in one place. As you progress, the storyline seems to continue as well. You get messages from the owner of the company, as well as words from the weatherman describing how horrible it is outside and how you should stay warm. Well, there's a fireplace here, so why not... wait, what's going on? Craz-Sugar Plumps your house is on fire. Get out! GET OUT! JUMP OUT A WINDOW OR SOMETHING JUST LEAVE! STOP TALKING TO ME OVER THIS LETTER EMAIL THING AND-...

No, shut up you old bitch. You created this monstrosity. You too weatherman, up there all safe in your balloon while we all freeze to death down here. I'm going to burn thru every damn thing I can find and then when I'm done I'm going to burn thru you. The game basically continues with the same theme... bad weather, hoo hoo hoo hugs, and burning. It's actually kind of amazing that a game with such a simple basis could create such an emotional reaction. I actually felt sad when Sugar Plumps died, and I actually didn't really like her to begin with. So as before, keep burning things, make combos of burning things, goof around a bit while waiting for more things to come in the mail. Then eventually, you get another letter in the mail... which one is it this time, the old hag or the ballooning bastard?

She's, alive? How? Her house burned down. That doesn't happen. Why is she all ashen? Is this some weird thing where she turned to ash and suddenly she's everywhere? Wait... you want me to burn myself? Why? I'm still alive and you're a freaky ash alien thing. No. I have more things to burn. Besides myself.
Huh. Ok, I don't have anything left to burn now. I bought a freakin' Mini-SUN and it didn't set my house on fire. So what the hell did you do to burn down SP? I sent you some items... and those 4 are the items that turn on the furnace? Huh... well, got nothin' left to burn, so here goes.
As for the ending, it's sweet, poignant, kind of interesting and a nice departure from the actual gameplay. If you've got the cash, I recommend buying it, either on the Humble Bundle, or on Steam outright. Just remember, when you've gotten everything you could possibly dream, you should dream bigger.
