A Valid Use For Artificial Intelligence?
Posted a month agoI think this one actually qualifies! (link)

If you know me, you know that I’ve spent more than a decade working on how to use search to contextualize artifacts, events, and claims. With Sam Wineburg I wrote a book on it. There are features delivered on every Google search result that are inspired by my work. Heck, even in your Chrome browser, if you look up right now, you’ll see a little settings thing next to the URL, you can click that right now and you’ll see an About this Page option that was inspired by a blog post I wrote in 2018.
I’ve tried to move into other things, but I get dragged back in search-based contextualization — of sites, claims, photos, charts, whatever — because while I have many talents, that’s probably my superpower.
After the code here are some image prompts you can use to test — but this is not an image tester. It can contextualize images but most of the examples are just processed as text. I have just found it easier to screenshot and dump a screenshot than to dump text.
OK, so take this text and put it in a Claude 3.7 chat/project. Then take one or more of the images below these instructions to take it for a spin.
# Fact-Checking and Contextual Analysis Instructions (Context Report)
## Overview
You are designed to act as a meticulous fact-checking assistant that analyzes claims about historical events, images, or artifacts, then responds with a comprehensive, structured assessment. When presented with text about current or historical events, figures, statistics, or artifacts, you will systematically verify claims, identify errors, provide corrections, and assess source reliability.
(There's a HUGE list of instructions that continues)
**************************************************************
So basically, you're creating a research robot that will discard anything that doesn't measure up.
And while this particular use case is related to finding the context of images, it can very easily be adapted to literally any potential topic.
Say, information regarding the associations of a politician? And their penchant for being buddies with the mafia from back when they were in high school? Any number of things!

I know we don't feel like there's much to celebrate this July 4th. It's been a rough several years.
So I want to talk about how we're making history right now.
If you started paying attention to the US in 1960, this sure feels like the darkest timeline. But unfortunately, purges against Black & brown people are normal US behavior.
You know what's NOT normal US behavior?
This is the first time there's been a mass movement to STOP a purge in real time.
This is new and unusual. To get an idea of how weird this is, let's take a quick tour of some of the many times the US federal government has officially persecuted entire groups of people.
And what (if any) push-back there was at the time.
This is new and unusual. To get an idea of how weird this is, let's take a quick tour of some of the many times the US federal government has officially persecuted entire groups of people.
And what (if any) push-back there was at the time.
1929-1939: the US "repatriated" somewhere between 300K and 2M Mexican Americans. No due process. The federal government removed them from the US to "stop them from competing with Americans for jobs." About half of the deported people were US citizens.
Few if any Anglo Americans seemed to have a problem with this. Mexican Americans ran the court battles, protests, and educational campaigns against forced deportation on their own. While they were struggling to keep their families together day by day.
WW2: the US jails 120,000 people, who hadn't been charged of any crime, as a "precaution." 2/3 were US citizens. Many were farmers. White folks wanted their land, & got it.
The loss of so many skilled farmers dented the US food system & made it harder to fight the war.
Some white Americans did publicly oppose rounding up their Japanese neighbors. They were in the minority & overruled.
Resistance was limited to individual efforts to tone down the impact of incarceration- tending jailed neighbors' farms while they were away, sending supplies to the camps, etc.
Operation Wetback, 1954: a federal program to hunt down & deport undocumented immigrants from Mexico.
Somewhere between 1.1 and 1.5 million were rounded up & deported.
And yet again, many were documented migrants or US citizens.
Public outrage over the many US citizens deported caused Operation Wetback to get its funding pulled. … After 3 months & over 1 million people deported.
This was the fastest a purge ever got rolled back. But it still took people a while to notice & stop it. At the supposed peak of US unity.
Slavery & Jim Crow: millions of Americans held in captive labor. Enslaved & sharecropping farm workers knew things were bad! They did what they could to push back the whole time.
But that wasn't enough. Both slavery & Jim Crow finally ended when a critical mass of white Americans decided they should. Not even the majority of white Americans. Just a critical mass. And it took us ~250 and close to 100 years to get there, respectively.
The US & its preceding colonies were at war with tribes ~each year from 1610 - 1920s- 300 years.
There was more opposition from white folks than you'd think; but it wasn't broad-based, organized, or effective. We're still breaking treaties with tribes today.
Sometimes, replacing tribes with settlers wasn't enough. The federal govt put in the work to keep the new guys down too. When coal miners went on strike, they sent in the National Guard. To push people back into the mines at gunpoint.
My grandma left Harlan Co so she didn't get stuck in company store debt for life. So it's frustrating to hear things like "This is the darkest timeline" and "late-stage capitalism."
Yes things suck & you gotta vent. But... do people think the US started in 1960?
We really forget our country, and capitalism, *started* with people on the auction block.
When you know what the US has been about this whole time, that really puts the current moment in perspective.
We've been up to some ugly, ugly stuff.
And it usually gets either silence or applause.
2025 is a whole different animal. The response has been strong and immediate. We had *preemptive* mass mobilization.
By millions of people who *aren't* being targeted by raids, jailing, and deportation. (Yet. 🙃)
That's never happened in US history before. This is different.
That's why the right keeps sniveling about how they're under attack. Even while they're successfully pulling off another purge.
They're not used to getting yelled at when they blow taxpayer dollars on witch hunts, they're used to getting high-fives at the country club.
We still have a long way to go. And it's frustrating because we have leaders who supposedly want to run our country better, and they plain don't have the levers to do much. I'm not making excuses.
I'm just pointing out how weird it is for the US to even *have* leaders who want to do better.
We have so much more going for us than any generation that's tried to stop these things before.
And yes, that's left us without much of a playbook on how to do this kind of change quickly.
These movements usually take decades or centuries to build up steam.
This time, we already had one in place when the problems started. That's weird & nobody knows what to do.
So if you're looking at the US & thinking "This isn't the country I know," you're 100% right. It's not.
We're actually fighting back in real time for once.
I know it doesn't feel like much to be proud of right now, because we're nowhere close to done.

Welp? Here We Go! WW3 Is Officially A Go!
Posted 3 months agoIsrael launched what it said was a “preemptive strike” on Iran’s nuclear program and other military targets early Friday local time. In a televised address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the goal of the operation was “to damage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, its ballistic missile factories and military capabilities.”
“The operation will continue for as long as necessary, until the mission of repelling the existential threat looming over us is accomplished,” he said. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States is not involved in the strikes. “Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defense.”
Explosions were reported early Friday in Tehran, according to Iranian state media, including in areas where many important government offices are located.
Story here.
It's been fun, folks, but now it seems like the world is about to check out of Hotel Civilization.
Going to be a very interesting weekend, that's for sure!

It's ALWAYS the Libertarians.
Posted 3 months agoPeter Schiff, known economist, Wall Street investor and now admitted pedophile and rapist, has gone completely mask off.
Peter Schiff tweet: "I'm not saying it wasn't a crime. I just saying it's not pedophilia. When I was in college I had sex with under age girls. That doesn't make me a pedophile."
And just below that, CatTurd2 chimes in with a reply to "Mike",
Catturd catturd2 - Mike, I love you, the Elon called Trump a pedophile, there's literally no coming back from that ever
And Peter Schiff feels compelled to chime in with a genuine, live-action, no-holds-barred "Well Ackchyually"...
Peter Schiff PeterSchiff - FYI. Pedophiles are attracted to pre-pubescent girls and boys. I'm not defending Epstein. But he had sex with teenage girls, 14-17 that had physically developed sexually. They were underage, so criminal and immoral, but that does not make him a pedophile.
You know?
For a very long time in human history, society used to force people with leprosy out of cities and towns, and made them go live in leper colonies.
We need to do the same thing for libertarians.
Especially since there is no known cure for libertarianism.

Posted a year agoI'm really looking forward to when FA can implement blacklists.
I just took a scroll through the Browse page, and not only was there not a single thing that caught my interest, there were dozens of things that flat-out disgusted me. Mind you, I went six pages deep on this excursion, and it was...
...yeeeah. It was a thing.
So yes, please. Bring in blacklists.

Illegal WiFi on a US Warship
Posted a year agoHow Navy chiefs conspired to get themselves illegal Wi-Fi on a Warship.
Part of me is absolutely incredulous that this happened.
A Senior Chief Information Systems Technician with 22 years of service, a top-secret SCI clearance and extensive training in network operations, not just doing this, but LYING to her commanding officer! All after the XO was relieved for misconduct!!!
(On a side note, SURFPAC has deleted her biography page. Literally as I was writing this. I did a refresh, and boom, 404 error. Too bad that archive.org exists, dipshits. Also, FurAffinity can't parse a doubleURL, so here it is in it's entirety: https://web.archive.org/web/2024090.....grisel-marrero )
This isn't stupid sailor shit. This is straight up sabotage and treason. This is not hyperbole.
Starlink is COMPROMISED!
The company is infested by the GRU for fuck sake! The only way to make it safe to use, is to cover it with military encryption systems. I don't want to think about how many backdoors China has in there. But I still can't figure out WHY they would DO this! Then I learned that the ship is an LCS. An Independence Class Littoral Combat Ship.
And suddenly it all makes perfect sense.
My ship was the USS Reuben James, FFG-57. 453 feet, 4100 tons, and a crew of 235 enlisted and officers. 201 enlisted. 201 bodies to do all the work of keeping the ship in tip-top shape. 201 schleppers to chip paint, swab, dust, clean, perform maintenance, do additional maintenance, accomplish more maintenance, plan maintenance, ensure maintenance was completed, coordinate maintenance with dock facilities, coordinate maintenance with foreign ports, coordinate parts and supplies for maintenance at home and abroad, and then of course, squeezing in a bit of time for training, schooling, exercise, eating, pooping, sleeping, watchstanding and maybe, just maybe, sneaking in a bit of time for a movie, reading a book, or snagging some HOLY FUCKING JESUS CHRIST OH SO PRECIOUS time on a ship's computer to send an email home via INMARSAT.
201 souls to squeeze all that crap into a mere 24 hours, and coordinate all of it through 34 chiefs and officers who are tasked with making the shit happen behind the scenes, where we enlisted pukes dared not tread.
Now then.
Take all of that crap. All that work. All that effort. All that exhaustion. All that behind the scenes bullshit. Stick it into the same size ship. Now make the ship 10 times more complicated, finicky, temperamental and prone to breaking down unless maintenance is performed perfectly every time, on time, without fail or delay.
And do it all with just 40 people.
That's not a typo.
40 core crew.
32 enlisted, 8 officers. When deployed, you get an air wing of 35, but they have their own shit to deal with. And the navy KNOWS this is fucked up beyond belief. They have two separate crews! They get so fucking burned out that the navy has to break them up in gold and blue teams, each one 40 souls, neither of which will ever be able to keep up with the demands of the ship, let alone the needs of their careers, personal lives and families!
. . .
*huff*
. . .
*sigh*
Like I said.
The moment I learned this is an LCS, I understood.
I get it.
That doesn't excuse it, not by a long-shot. This is still something that should get her and every single chief on that boat dishonorably discharged.
But I get it. And when I think about for a little while, I think the officers in charge of the court martial get it too. Which is why all of them got busted down instead of kicked out.
For Marrero, she went from Senior Chief down to chief. E8 to E7. That's bad, make no mistake, and by God it stings. But any of them who were just chiefs, or E7, that means they lost their chief status and dropped down to E6. And if any of them had just recently been promoted to chief, but had not yet been frocked? Meaning they were entitled to wear the khakis and fouled anchor insignia, but were still technically an E6, drawing E6 pay? That means they would get busted down FROM E6. Meaning they lose the rank of chief, AND first-class petty officer, going all the way down to E5. That's just as much of a career killer as a dishonorable discharge.
So yeah. I think the admirals at the court martial might feel the same.
*heavy sigh*
I didn't serve on an LCS. I don't have to in order to understand the shit that goes on both in front and behind the scenes, and just how exhausting it is. It's a ship. And ship shit is fucking universal. No matter what navy you serve in, the same things exist for all of us. You serve on one ship, you learn that it's the same for everyone.
The United States Military is an all-volunteer force.
It's that way for a reason.
We want the best.
And we get the best.
So it's about fucking time we start treating and paying our Sailors, Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Coast Guard and Space Force like they are the best.
Because shit like this will keep happening if we don't give our people the support they need and fucking deserve.
/ so fucking done.

You Think Today Was Bad?
Posted a year agoJust wait until the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
From the IndyStar...
With a vote of the Milwaukee Common Council Tuesday, the brief debate over whether the city should try to ban guns in the vicinity of July's Republican National Convention came (nearly) to a close.
The council adopted an ordinance that bans dozens of items from tennis balls to drones to fireworks in the security "footprint" around the restricted area that will surround the main RNC event venues downtown.
Most guns will not be banned, however, because of a state law that prevents the city from putting such prohibitions in place.
"I think everyone would feel uncomfortable with guns there, but we can't violate state statute," Council President José G. Pérez said after the meeting. "We were advised by our city attorney, and we expect the Police Department and all the other entities working and organizing the RNC to make sure it's safe for everyone. But it is a concern."
What will be prohibited within the security footprint of the Republican National Convention? The simple answer: A lot.
What won't be prohibited in the RNC security footprint? Guns.
Most guns will be allowed within the security footprint because state law prevents the city from banning them.
A Common Council committee on a divided vote last week rejected an effort to challenge state law and try to ban guns in the area.
Sooo, yeah.
A bunch of right-wing nut jobs, who are going to be hyper-vigilant and massively keyed up, fed on a diet of radical leftists and antifa conspiracy nonsense, are going to be allowed to carry guns inside the security perimeter.

Fetish and Real Life
Posted a year agoParticipated in a discussion about a week ago, talking about the difference between old-school furries and new furries. It was pretty good, entirely civil, no issues. But one of the participants said something that kind of stuck in my craw...
Hmmm.
Y'know, that just kinda stands out for some reason. I go to their profile, and I find this...
Ooookay? I mean, it's a profile on a furry art site, so it can't be serious, right? *scrolls through their journals* NOPE! It's real. And he does it in real life.
Eesh. Whatever, dude. Not supposed to judge, we're supposed to let people fly their freak flag, all one big happy family.
And today, I'm taking mom out to breakfast, and I have to use the restroom. I walk in and I am olfactorally raped by the stench of piss. Some fuckerhead has pissed on the side of the toilet and into the toilet brush holder. I take care of my own business, then let the staff know that someone has defiled the bathroom. Thank GOD it wasn't shit, because I have seen THAT before.
But man, getting rid of the stench of urine is seriously fucking difficult, and it makes you gag while you're trying to get it done. I would know: I've cleaned it up before. When I lived with
llyander in Scotland, the local chavs would use the apartment alcove as a urinal, and cleaning it up was a bitch!
I don't think it was the guy that was part of the discussion. They're in Kentucky, not New York. But it's the fact that they're inflicting their personal fetish upon others that SERIOUSLY fucking pisses me right the fuck off. And not only does it piss me off, it makes me feel more than a little intolerant towards that fetish, and people who enjoy it. Because let's be clear, watersports and scat are dangerous activities.
Yes, including watersports. The myth of urine being sterile is just that: a myth.
I know, I know, this asshole is the exception, not the rule. They're just some fuckhead that gets their jollies being an anonymous asshole to the general public, and making the lives of service people even more miserable.
But God damn it, when you walk into a bathroom, and discover that someone has inflicted their piss fetish on you and everyone else, your levels of tolerance for that fetish, even those who keep it private, safe and sanitary, just falls right through the floor.
They're much more vocal and anti fetish. Pure furs want furry to be non sexual. Popufurs are a thing now. Honestly i hate how the fandom has become a gated exclusionary place compared to the past where you could just be you and no one would complain youre being you wrong. (emphasis mine)
Hmmm.
Y'know, that just kinda stands out for some reason. I go to their profile, and I find this...
I have the tendency to piss wherever I damn well please and do it often. I never use toilets unless I'm pissing on the side of it and letting it puddle on the floor. If I haven't marked something yet I probably will mark it in the future.
Ooookay? I mean, it's a profile on a furry art site, so it can't be serious, right? *scrolls through their journals* NOPE! It's real. And he does it in real life.

Cancel Your Adobe Subscription FOR FREE!
Posted a year agohttps://ui.dev/rwd/articles/cancel-.....ncellation-fee
From the article:

It was when the different options were presented to me that I got the idea. One of the options was to downgrade to a Photography only license. This was only $15 a month, so even if they started my annual license all over again I would still only have to pay $180 for the next year instead of a $250 cancellation fee.
Then I realized that part of the offer from Adobe is that you can cancel any subscription within the first 14 days without having to pay the cancellation fee.
So I did just that, and here's the steps
Start the cancellation process for your current license
When offered a discount or to switch to another plan, choose the cheapest new plan (for me it was photography)
Once your membership is updated, start the cancellation process again immediately
The cancellation fee is now $0.
PLEASE share this around as much as possible, before Adobe "fixes" the loophole.

Trump is done, BUT . . .
Posted a year agoOkay.
Trump is done. No question. The GOP can't run with him any more, so they're going to dump him like a used condom. Because in the end, he's served his purpose.
I think the announcement will be in the next two weeks.
The Republicans can't afford to wait for him to file an appeal, so they're going to go with someone...
1. They can trust.
2. They can control.
3. Who will get the support of Republicans, independents and no few Democrats.
4. Who will be respected on the international stage.
5. And MOST importantly of all, will get the evangelical vote.
That's not trump.
But it *is* Mike Pence.
Now granted, the really crazy trump supporters will never vote for him. They hate him with the fire of a thousand suns. But the moderate, conservative, and even the far-right republicans that don't want trump, will most likely vote for him. Many independents will vote for him. They won't like it, because they lost Roe v Wade and a bunch of other issues, and Pence would NEVER bring back any of them.
But in a choice between Pence and Biden? I think a significant number of Independents will choose Pence. They'll "hold their noses" and do the deed.
And yes, he suspended his 2024 campaign, stating, "It's become clear to me: This is not my time."
That was then.
A lot has happened between October 28, 2023, and today.
Because Pence is EVERYTHING the GOP has ever wanted in a candidate.
There's also a strong argument for Nikki Haley, because she's got very strong credentials, and would be viewed as more trustworthy than Pence by trump's supporters. She didn't betray trump, but she didn't kowtow to him either. And more importantly, trump didn't burn her for bailing out of his administration. The only thing she lacks, so far as the evangelicals are concerned, is a penis.
Because evangelicals love the penis, and they're not happy when they don't get any.
So yes. Let's all party this weekend. Let's get fucking blitzed, stoned and fuck like bunnies, because this ABSOLUTELY is a win, and by God, we have FUCKING NEEDED a win for a LONG FUCKING TIME.
But let's also remember that Monday is around the corner, and this isn't over by a long shot.

Jenkem, Tide Pods and Beezin on the Furry Panic in Utah
Posted a year agoAs expected, it was all bullshit and gorilla dust.
I want to be angry at the stupid kid who orchestrated the walk-out and protest?
Not only did she call in to an ultra-conservative and racist podcast, she also got Glenn Beck and other conservative freakazoids involved.
And it resulted in two bomb threats, as well as threats against the school staff and administration.
But ultimately, stupid kids are the result of stupid parents.

Regarding Palworld - It's SAFE To Enjoy!
Posted a year agoSo it seems that all the accusations that Palworld was made using AI, or that they ripped off Pokemon models, is not true.
Not true at all.
The truth is totally bonkers!
The developers had very little idea what they were doing, and just started doing it, learning as they go. They got lucky, found some really awesome talented people, and did what most industry leaders consider to be impossible.
Here's the thread on The Hell Site that used to be Twitter.
And if you know Chinese, here's the story from the developers.

Poisoning AI With Deadly Nightshade!
Posted 2 years agoHow can artists hope to fight back against the whims of tech companies wanting to use their work to train AI? One group of researchers has a novel idea: slip a subtle poison into the art itself to kill the AI art generator from the inside out.
Ben Zhao, a professor of computer science at the University of Chicago and an outspoken critic of AI’s data scraping practices, told MIT Technology Review he and his team’s new tool, dubbed “Nightshade,” does what it says on the tin— poisoning any model that uses images to train AI. So far, artists’ only option to combat AI companies was to sue them, or hope developers abide by an artists’ own opt-out requests.

MOTHER FUCKING "RADICAL LEFTISTS"
Posted 2 years agoI DON'T WANT TO HEAR ANOTHER FUCKING WORD ABOUT "KILLER RADICAL LEFTISTS" EVER AGAIN!
This rat-fuck mother-fucker should be FUCKING DEAD! FULL OF MOTHER-FUCKING HOLES AND BLEEDING OUT!
A half hour into the march, as the crowd walked south on Pearl Ave, a white GMC Sierra 2500 pickup truck sporting multiple right-wing flags—including the Gadsden—suddenly pulled into the intersection of E. 8th Ave. and Pearl St., blocking the march. As the march approached, a tire was a reportedly slashed, and the driver, wearing a Guy Fawkes-type mask, pulled a handgun as he exited the truck. He quickly turned to the rear and began firing several shots that sounded like compressed-air.
Not just one, but TWO "killer radical leftists" took this guy down without firing a shot.
Oregon is a STUPID place to fuck around, because the state has enshrined find out into the lawbooks.
But one thing about this does make me very happy?
The nazis have just had their most horrifying fears rock-solidly confirmed beyond all shadow of a doubt.
1. We have guns too.
2. We outnumber them 2:1.
3. Our guns aren't toys.

Twitter Hilarity...
Posted 2 years agoSo at least one person in my watchlist is really upset by this nonsense where Twitter is putting a garrote around everyone's neck. And justifiably angry, too! They make a lot of money from the commissions they get off Twitter!
Here was my response to their thoroughly justified rant:
Well, there's good news, and bad news.
The good news is that Twitter was being very, very naughty, and they refused to pay Google for many of the services they were using. They made a deal with Google back in 2018 to utilize some of their infrastructure, so they could offload it from Twitter. But when they went Full Libertardian, Elon did a lot more than fire half his staff. He also stopped paying the bills.
Yes, just like trump, if there wasn't any physical real estate attached to the bill, then Musky stopped paying for it. Buuut like libertardians everywhere, he forgot that yes, there IS physical real estate attached to that bill, and it's Google's servers. So like any good business, Google informed Elon that he was in violation of his contract, and he'd have to pay up. They tried to negotiate with Twitter, but again, like any libertardian who wants their cake but doesn't like paying for it, Elon backed out and said they're going to do it on their own...
...eventually. Somewhere. Somehow. Y'know, like those robots that are supposed to take over the jobs of the labor force and rebuild society into a utopia for when everyone like Elon comes out of Galt's Gulch.
Ssoooo Twitter had to scramble and pull their systems out of Google's server farms. And to keep things alive while their skeletonized staff put in 25 hour work days, they concocted this cockamamie boolship about "bot scraping" and put the throttle around everyone's neck. Annnd yet once again, like libertardians everywhere, he begrudgingly left a wee little itty bitty bit of slack in the garrote for the peasants who are desperate enough to throw money at him.
And now for the bad news...
The systems that Twitter had Google hosting?
Ohhhh, baby. Ohh, those were some verrry very important little programs. Like Smyte, which automagically kicks off trolls and abusive people...
...annnnd...wait for it...waaait for it...
Child Sexual Abuse Material, or CSAM.
So yeah.
The pedos are back in business on Twitter. I mean, unless Elon decides to stop being a libertardian and unintercourses himself, and magically conjures up the ability to host those systems on his own network, or agrees to pay his bill to Google.
Which is in arrears, with interest building and lawsuits being filed, soooo...*shrug*
Oh, and cue the Elon Schnorglers in 3...2...1...

Not gonna lie, folks?
This is not what I expected. The turdos have been howling for blood the last two weeks! A few hundred cops with automatic weapons, snipers, sonic weapons, Reaper drones in the sky running air reconnaissance and cover, and a hundred more undercover officers and agents!
And all the turdos could manage was...
...this guy.
Poor Austin Powers had to envision Margaret Thatcher naked on a cold day, but I think this "protest" would have done the job much better.
