Never taking you for granted again
General | Posted a year agoFirst off, I haven't said it here in any formal capacity, but may Dragoneer rest in peace, whatever you might think of him I can only thank him for creating such a wonderful site that I've hung out on for nearly two decades now, and the fandom wouldn't nearly be the same without it. My deepest condolesces to family and close friends especially.
Now...wow, that was an intense couple of days, not knowing if I'd all of a sudden lose my page on here, but also two decades worth of fandom history, go completely up in smoke just because some wannabe Hitler Youth member got bored, failed to adequately entertain himself, and took advantage of a vulnerable situation to try and twist the knife further.
Which is why it is great to hear the site is back, things are cleaned back up and how we left it, and things are slowly getting back to normal, but it goes to show how fragile the site and its history can be. So I suggest if you like a piece of art on here, or have conversations worth saving on here, you should probably save them. Now I dunno if this site will last 1, 2, 5, maybe another 20 years, hell it might even outlive all of us and live through the aeons and empires, but it could also disappear tomorrow, so just in case.
I'll get to that, and maybe I'll get back up and draw stuff again, or divulge on how things are going, or just post another birthday journal in a couple months. We'll see. Take care!

It's that day again.
General | Posted 2 years agoIt is my birthday today!
Time to dig my claws into some cake and ice cream, and maybe get some nice presents and even nicer well wishes. =D

I've Been Everywhere, Man (Cohost+Mastodon and elsewhere)
General | Posted 2 years agoAnd I said, listen...
No, I'm not leaving here, after all this time I'm probably on FA's ship until they finally run it aground or decommission it, hopefully not for a long time. But with ElonTwitter unravelling and people posting their other sites, especially BlueSky, thought I'd show some other places I've signed up for or used more over the past few months.
Cohost is my favorite of the new sites, I feel like it is closest to what social media should be for me. No corporate influence, no algorithms goading you nor high scores to chase, the Community Guidelines heavily discourage the kind of rancid, abusive, and offensive behaviors other sites fail to stop or actively encourage, and the community there is such it feels like a pastiche of old-school forums I used to frequent and early days of Tumblr but much more relaxed and chill. I'm over there at https://cohost.org/Masakuni
Mastodon, it took me a little bit to get into it, and less so than Cohost, but I've warmed up to it. While on the surface it can seem daunting, I think that the federated framework of it is a strength once you familiarize yourself with it and get used to it, which when I did I got something that feels like the early days of Twitter when I didn't have as many people I was following. Of course, there's the trouble of figuring out which instance you want to sign on, it took me a while before I happened upon one a friend of a friend of a friend helps run, but you can always sign up on the main Mastodon instance then either change your account or make another one on the instance you ultimately end up on. I'm over at https://meow.social/@Masakuni
Twitch - is a bare bones set up, using a laptop speaker to talk through, and lately I have been playing a lot of Link to the Past Randomizer and getting embedded into the racing scene there after participating in a mentor tournament, and prepping for a team-based tournament on that over the next several weeks. Eventually I'll probably get a mic or something, and play other games on there once that dies down. I'm over at https://www.twitch.tv/masakunidragon
Itaku - looks promising, but has been a ghost town for me so far. But check https://itaku.ee/profile/masakuni to help make it less so
As for BlueSky...I'll probably sign up when they ultimately open up to everyone or someone gives me an invite, but I'm not gonna go out of my way to fish for one and I'm not in too much a hurry to get there. I really don't know after over a decade of Twitter's nonsense if I'm ready to get on Jack Dorsey's wild ride yet again, but it seems it's slowly approaching mass adoption, so I might have to have some presence there when I do.
And that is that. There is also here, and other sites I'm around, and Discord, and other places. Wherever I see you at, take care!

Forward and Beyond: 2022 into 2023 (+ top 10 albums)
General | Posted 3 years agoI don't want to do a long-winded year in review like I did for previous years so I'll be brief, at least compared to those journals I used to do.
I can't say that 2022 was all that great. Some good, a fair bit more bad, mostly a little more watching the world around me burn while scrolling on Twitter and a little less taking care to make sure my corner of it is driving toward a perfect future where the world outside is not, but that's not to say I have not made strides.
I went out to a few concerts again, and even a small goth festival. I spent a day at FWA. I'm starting to get up to go to places again. Also, more importantly, I've repeatedly wished I could get back into drawing; even if it's only while I'm at the TV putting NXT 2.0/2.5 or some other event in the background for a couple hours per week if that, and even if my materials are nothing more than cheap colored pencils and art pencils, I've managed to start drawing again and even put out a few pieces over the entire back half of the year. I'll definitely post more, but I wanna find time to also learn digital art programs so I can bang out more stuff when I can. I also took the plunge and finally tried the Link to the Past randomizer after much deliberating about trying to learn it, to the point a lot of my runs are in the 2:30 range, even had one go sub-2. I wonder if more will come of it? Will I take the time to learn to stream my exploits? Who knows?
In the new year, as well as drawing more and trying to chip away at my backlog of video games and other media, I want to not so much make a "new me" out of a new year, but refine myself as much as I can and be myself as much as I can. Be more comfortable with myself, reach out some more, exercise more (not necessarily to lose weight, just to feel better), more importantly, get closer to finding some way to leverage my hobbies and interests and eventually make a life for myself. Maybe finally start working towards going back to and finishing school?
Here is to making 2023 the best year I can make it be, and I hope you can help make it your best year as well.
Anyway, for your listening pleasure, I have compiled a top ten list of albums in the goth and industrial and EBM and synthpop scene that I have listened to and maybe you might find something worth listening to in here.
1. ESA (Electronic Substance Abuse) - Designer Carnage
2. Noise Unit - Cheeba City Blues
3. Pig - The Merciless Light
4. Priest - Body Machine
5. Encephalon - Echoes
6. Eisfabrik - Life Below Zero
7. Am Tierpark - Forevermore
8. Solitary Experiments - Transcendent
9. X Marks the Pedwalk - New//End
10. KMFDM - Hyena

Some late holiday wishes
General | Posted 3 years agoLittle dragon rushes downstairs and buzzes in anticipation of opening presents all throughout breakfast, given a little hot chocolate to cool down and warm up through a cool snowy Christmas morning. Eventually though, it is time to open presents, and he tears through wrapping paper and opens the presents one by one, pulling out a toy or a plushie or a cute pair of PJs that matches the green dragon hoodie ones that his dad is wearing, but in purple; one by one excitedly until all that is left is a tornado of wrapping paper and boxes.
There is of course plenty of time to play with the toys and the boxes, but soon the dragons will board an airship and visit some friends and family of the two parent dragons. Mom's bandmate Giuseppe, two continents southward, has invited them for dinner cooked by his boyfriend, and they will also exchange gifts with each other, maybe even spend the night. The following day closer to home Dad's ex-boyfriend has also invited them and has some gifts for exchange as well.
This was late to get out as I had some IRL obligations I'm just now getting out of, but I hope all of you have had a very Merry Christmas and a happy holidays, or even just a happy day yourself. And if not, just remember that you are valid and you are loved, and I'm so happy that you're around and you are you. <3

It's my birthday!
General | Posted 3 years agoYep, it is the little dragon's birthday today! I wonder what presents I'll get and if I'll get to bury my face in a cake, or burn off my energy at a park until I get tired? Who knows? c:
In all seriousness, this marks my 33rd. While it's easy to lament where the time goes, it's also a time to look back how far I've come and keep on living, keep on trying different hats until I can't anymore.
Also I hadn't done a birthday journal in a while, and I guess haven't done a journal in a while since I don't know what to say, so I suppose the floor is yours if you wanna ask me something, since I've been silent on here except for when I've posted my attempts at art at a glacial clip.
Look forward to more every now and then, possibly. <:

Still here
General | Posted 4 years agoJust checking in for a little while, showing that I am still alive. Also an excuse to push down the last journal since the "new" year is already half over.
I don't check this as often, opting to use my Twitter and some other sites, and moreso my Discord and communities there I've joined lately. But I do check in whenever I get the chance to. (also, if you want to contact me on Discord, shoot me a request on Masakuni#7673 )
Not much has been going on of note, just hanging in there waiting for the pandemic to wane, then I'll try to set some plans in motion. Kind of a long story and I don't want to get into it right now or be a downer, maybe later with more an eye on the future.
Hope everyone's been doing well despite everything!

2020 - My Top 10 Music Albums
General | Posted 5 years agoI don't think I'll do a 2020 year in review this year (I don't think I've done one in a while anyway). It sucked, we all know it sucked, I don't think I need to write some paragraphs explaining why nor do I want my first journal in a while to be such a downer. The music however? At least from where I stand, it was really good.
This is focused on the kind of music I listen to, mainly the goth and industrial side of things, mainly EBM-centric and synthpop/futurepop centric, but also industrial rock and NDH, and pretty much anything adjacent to and between that spectrum as well. So without further ado, this is my top 10!
1. <PIG> - Pain is God
2. Assemblage 23 - Mourn
3. Seeming - The Birdwatchers’ Guide to Atrocity
4. ESA - Burial 10
5. Einsturzende Neubauten - Alles im Allem
6. Renard - Waking Up in a Different World
7. Witt - Rubezahls Ruckkehr
8. Rotersand - How Do You Feel Today?
9. Mono Inc. - The Book of Fire
10. Linea Aspera - LP II
Where I can find them, I have provided links to Bandcamp if you would like to check these artists out, and support them at the same time too. Support your favorite musicians, especially during this time that touring is not possible. Read on if you don't mind a wall of text explaining why I put the top 10 where I did. (2020-now-2021 and FA still doesn't do readmore breaks smh)
The top three was easy for me. Assemblage 23's and Seeming's newest entries could both make a case for the soundtrack of 2020. A23 captures perfectly the anxieties of living in the new normal, while still firing off some of the best futurepop work Tom Shear has done in a little while. Seeming didn't quite hit as much but I still love their way of approaching the year, albeit I think the bulk of it was written before the pandemic? Either way, their melodic and anthemic method of making music shines through here as well as Alex Reed's lyricism, bringing some comfort to an uncomfortable slice of time and also a call to action.
I chose #1 because this is the best work a project that, along with KMFDM, helped me get into this whole genre in the first place have put out in a while, and especially since Raymond Watts reactivated it a few years back; the previous two albums were good but I felt something was missing, turns out that was Steve White. It is 71 minutes of Watts' twisted sermons of human depravity as well as turning the capitalist excesses of organized religion and American exceptionalism on its head (as well as reflecting the hellfire and brimstone of the former back at them), all on the backdrop of intense electronics and Steve White's guitars, and does not get stale for even a single minute. The Swining, Sinsation, and Wrecked were some of my favorite albums; this is right up there, so it has to go to #1 for me.
Figuring out the rest of the list was difficult, there were some albums that couldn't make it, but I tried to go for ones that I keep coming back to. For #4, Jaime Blacker's rhythmic noise project keeps finding ways to top itself, even after the amazing That Beast and the Themes of Carnal Empowerment trilogy; continuing the intensity of those while continuing to weave thought-provoking lyrics and soundscapes through the noise. Neubauten is more melodic and more mellow than they used to be making albums like Halber Mensch or Kollaps, but the DIY ethos is still there and their sound has grown in such a pleasing and mature way these days. There is also the return of half of Wolfsheim in Markus Reinhardt’s Renard (nothing to do with Lapfox, thankfully) project, with guest vocalists standing in for Peter Heppner’s former role (who himself is having a decent solo career), especially the two songs of Marion Gold (of Alphaville fame, the band known for Big in Japan and Forever Young); it is good to see he still has the range after all this time. It also makes me wonder how Wolfsheim would’ve developed if they never broke up after Casting Shadows.
Two great NDH albums take #7 and #9; Mono Inc. continue to get better and better with their style of symphonic, melodic dance-metal. Joachim Witt is four decades removed from his Goldener Reiter hit, and is already in his 70s, but to continue to put out an album like this that is as good as anything on his Bayreuth trilogy, and also hitting the right mix of heavy as well as emotional, is nothing short of amazing. Sandwiched between is Rotersand’s newest, also a great EBM record that, like the band is known for, and the second album since a nine-year hiatus. It’s up there with their best, and weaves dancefloor killers and intense electronics with melodies and slower moments, and even a song like “Hot Ashes” with few lyrics is a great antifascist dance floor anthem. Finally I finish the list with Linea Aspera’s LP II, their sophomore album after a few years and the two members going solo for a bit, which is more synthpoppy and melodic than their first effort. The music of songs like Solar Flare, Equilibrium, and Entropy stick with me, not just the lyrics but the synths as well.
And...there you go! If you read all this way, I congratulate you for weaving through my disjointed nerding out over the kind of music I like. I should do this again next year probably, let’s see how I feel. Thanks for reading and enjoy your new year!

How to Train Your Dragon 3
General | Posted 7 years agoJust returned from seeing this movie, finally breaking the 2 year streak of me not going to a movie for reasons, because there was no way I was going to break tradition of seeing this installment of the series after having seeing the other two the Saturday they came out.
It was good! Once again there were plenty of feels to be had, from exhilaration to laughter to teary feels, and seeing Toothless and all the dragons on the big screen again was neat. Also seemed like a good way to close the series should they not make another.
If you have a chance to go to the movies, this movie might be worth a look. ^^

It's a new year
General | Posted 7 years agoNot much to say because not much has changed. Haven't been out and about lately, and still hoping to get a job and eventually get out of here, especially now that I feel like I can't keep living here since I feel like I'm living on a sinking ship, not being able to save money since Dad met a woman in Florida and he always seems to be gone, meaning I have to spend money that I would've had for fun stuff just to live off of. I'm hoping the new year could make a change, maybe I find a job, or find a way to move out on my own and start over from little else than stuff that I happen to take with me. Or maybe failing all that, I may go back to school and finish the last little bit of my English major. Whatever happens, here's hoping 2019 is better for me, and it's not enough to hope as much, it's something I have to work on as I never was great at committing to a lot of things all the way through.
What I am trying to say is, happy new year, hope your year goes well!
I also did this once, but never did this in subsequent years, but 2018 was another great year for the kind of music I listen to! Let me share you my top 10 albums of the year and a link to the album or a favorite song from it, because a great way to start off the new year is to share some of the stuff that I like to listen to.
1. VNV Nation - Noire
2. Helix - Twin
3. Ashbury Heights - The Victorian Wallflowers
4. Cocksure - Be Rich
5. Caustic - American Carrion
6. ESA - That Beast
7. <PIG> - Risen
8. V▲LH▲LL - Grimoire
9. ohGr - TrickS
10. Kirlian Camera - Hologram Moon

Towards another year
General | Posted 8 years agoIt's easy to say the new year things will be better, but this time I really feel the coming year is going to be a good one, despite everything. Up until recently I've been barely living, feeling like my breath is just a ticking clock, going through the motions, but things are starting to happen and I'm slowly getting out of it. I'm finally getting some work experience at my Dad's, I'll be getting a new car soon, I'll have something resembling an income the coming months, and as a result I can go out and about more, whether out of town to a concert or maybe some conventions. We'll see how it goes.
In any case, hope all of you have a great new year! =D

Upblep + Christmas + Switch
General | Posted 8 years agoSince I haven't made a journal since this time last year I thought I'd check in to sum up what's going on. In a word, not much.
-I've been taking an extended break from studies to recover from being burnt out, and try to get a job. It's been tough until recently, but now I've been helping my Dad at the office and getting paid for it too!
-The car that I've been driving for 8 years finally gave up on me. But it's fine, I'm working on using my Mom's old car as she drives another car.
-Haven't been out and about much as a result; I went to FWA 2017 and a couple of concerts but that's about it.
-And....that's about it.
Oh! And in more recent news, by which I mean literally two days ago, I have a Switch! I only have Zelda so far, but I'm planning on getting MK8D, Splatoon 2, and Odyssey, along with other games that'll surely come out for it. My friend code for it is SW-7281-0862-9031 if you want to add me.
Oh, and as always, little dragon hopes everyone has a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays! Enjoy what presents and time with friends and family you're able to, I know that I'll be spending the day playing with any new toys and trinkets I get! =D

So I might drive down to Megaplex for Saturday.
General | Posted 9 years agoI have a little money saved up, and since other cons are a long way off, I decided I should at least check Megaplex out just for Saturday since it's just a 4 1/2 hour drive. If nothing else, it'd be a nice opportunity to get out of the house!
Now, if I still have some money left over, I'm thinking; I'll be driving a little late otherwise, meaning I'd be on the road from 1-5 AM, and I would much rather try and drive in the morning instead, or later that evening if I still had enough money. Anyone willing to let me crash for that Saturday night only? I know it's a long shot, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
If not, that's fine. Hopefully this will be a fun day out of the house either way!

General | Posted 9 years ago...be sure to have lots of fun and enjoy yourself! I'm not going, since I haven't saved up anything for it, but I'm planning on doing so next year.
Have fun and be safe!

Towards the new year
General | Posted 10 years agoI don't think I'll elaborate too much on this past year. All that I'll say is, it's been rough lately, but I survived it, and all I can do now is turn the page and look forward to the new year.
So anyway
Hope everyone has a Happy New Year, and let's make this the best year we can possibly make it!

I'm sorry
General | Posted 10 years agoI've been neglecting some of my favorite hobbies since I've been so busy with school lately, and even then I've been such a ball of stress and exhaustion that keeping my GPA at respectable has been a very tall order. More importantly, if you've tried to talk to me on Skype and got no response, that's probably why.
I'm honestly just glad to get a month off. I need it. I really want some time to do things I enjoy doing, like gaming, drawing, running, listening to music as opposed to sitting by and letting myself waste away all day since I'm too stressed out and unwilling to want to say anything to anyone. I need some time to get myself back up to working order so I can get the hell out of college, and by extension, get the hell out of town before I get older. I can't keep living like this.
So um, yeah, just wanted to let you know I'm not dead, nor do I hate you if I'm ignoring you. I've just been really busy, I'm really sorry. ;w;

Anthrocon 2015 - Thoughts and Reflections
General | Posted 10 years agoHello everyone. Sorry for being late, I’ve just been sluggish since coming back to the con. Without further ado, here is my report for this year’s Anthrocon.
Well, needless to say, out of all the times I’ve been to Anthrocon, this was the most unexpected trip out of the five trips I’ve made to Anthrocon.
A little background: Up until two weeks before I drove up, I had no plans to make this con. None. Nada. Zero. Zilch. Null. Insert synonym for none here. Even up until two weeks prior to AC I was in the middle of trying to save up just enough money for a day or two in Atlanta so I can get out of the house, either while it was going on or a week or two after. My Dad had been asking me what time I would’ve left for AC, but I didn’t think anything would come of it.
Now we get to a night after I got home from another visit with my Mom. Turns out Dad had some extra money around, and he thought he could give it to me. All I could say is, wow. So Anthrocon 2015 was a go after all.
I still kinda wish he used the money for something else, but that’s really nice of him, I appreciate it.
Anyway, the con.
Getting there was very difficult this time around. I started running into weather in Virginia, which turned into a full-on deluge that rained down faster than my windshield wipers could keep up by the time I got on interstate 79 in West Virginia. This and trying to navigate traffic set me behind, and I didn’t get there until 11:30, an hour later than I was shooting for.
Eventually I got there. Tired, ready to go to bed (something I wouldn’t be able to do that night, oddly enough), and get ready for Thursday.
I think I regret not being able to get some sleep for Wednesday night, and it showed for most of the day. It was hard to stay up, and I needed to take a break after getting through the first part of the registration line. I needed sleep, but it was hard to get it until Thursday night.
At least my body still knows when it’s time to get some sleep. And I did. And still managed to get up early enough to shower, get dressed, and still have time to spare for breakfast before the opening ceremonies.
From then on, it was nothing but hanging out with friends, saying hi, catching up, getting art, good times, good people, and fun moments all around.
This time though, I took it easy. I frequented the dealer’s room and the dances a lot, and didn’t do too much outside of those. Or going where good friends were going.
There are some panels that I wish I did, and some places in town I wish I could’ve explored during the con’s downtime, but I had fun with what I did do. I still went to the Masquerade, did a lot of dancing, enjoy a friend’s “birthday” dinner, got a few badges, enjoyed a fursuit parade (and it went outside, too! Maybe next year I should go outside and watch it), actually went in the dead dog dance for longer than a minute, and most importantly, see some good friends!
Anyway, here are some shoutouts:

As for the rest of the year, I likely won’t have the money nor the time to visit any conventions, especially considering I have a fall semester that’ll eat up any chance of doing that. I was planning on skipping this con and going all in on Anthrocon ’16…well, I’m still going to go to AC ’16, but at least now I didn’t miss out on this year’s version of the con, and I can get a bonus set of memories instead of trying to see it through Youtube videos or something.
Once college starts back up, I’ll start saving for next year’s convention, and maybe I’ll throw in FWA as well if all goes well. It feels quite criminal that I have been to Anthrocon, a convention that is an entire day’s drive away, and only been to FWA, a convention that’s merely a 3 hour drive, twice. I’m planning on giving both cons some love next year, and I hope I can see some of you there!
But for now, I’ve enjoyed my time at Anthrocon, and hope that everyone who went there did. I hope to see some of you next year!
And now, back to real life!

PLACEHOLDER: STANDBY FOR ANTHROCON REPORT
General | Posted 10 years agoHello everyone.
Well, I'm back from Anthrocon, and in short, I had a lot of fun!
Now, I've got a lot to say about the trip, but I need a little bit more time to recover and get my thoughts in line before I write a report on the trip, but it should be coming within the next 24-48 hours if all goes well.
But yeah, just thought I'd let you guys know I've returned safely.

To Anthrocon!
General | Posted 10 years agoHello everyone.
Well, Anthrocon is upon us. A trip that I had no idea I would take until 2 weeks ago, and the second convention I'm going to this year, out of two, unless something else happens.
Anyway, once again I'll be driving all the way to Anthrocon for all of tomorrow, and if all goes well, I should be getting there around 10:30 or 11. I'm looking forward to seeing some of my friends again, and hopefully using the time to take it all in and enjoy myself.
As for correspondence?
Well, I have a Twitter. You can reach me there. It's over at http://twitter.com/MasakuniDragon .
Some of you have my number. But if you don't, and you want to text me, DM me here, and we can arrange something.
Other than that, I hope to see some of you at Anthrocon! And for everyone else, take care of yourselves.

Anthrocon roll call!
General | Posted 10 years agoHello everyone.
Well, first thing to get out of the way, my room situation for Wednesday night has been secured; I've got a place to sleep for that night. So that's out of the way now!
Now, I wanna ask, who is going to AC?
While I have things I wanna do at the con and places to check out, I'd also like to know who wouldn't mind me tagging along to do things, like wander around the con, find food, or just talk.
So who am I seeing there?
