Issues with waiting lists 3.0
Posted 7 years agoI was actually typing this as a response elsewhere, but sadly every artist who's got too many cheerleaders has a similar approach to facing criticism. "Be snarky and block" - That will show them.
And I took forever writing it so I'm not letting it go to waste and might as well just rephrase it; besides since I was so kindly pointed out as someone 'doing it to other people' - giving criticism about how they do business, I figure it would further illustrate the issue with mis-managed waiting lists.
This is in regard to using a 'waiting list' method that involves 35+ people on theirs, probably ETA 1 year for it to be cleared off. And it would really honestly apply to almost anyone in a similar situation.
They believe that casting me out as 'rude' for speaking my mind (generally constructively enough to EXPLAIN things, who would've guessed) and then telling me I won't 'ever get a spot with them' is a form of punishment.
I don't know how to phrase it but, do any of you really think being 'blocked' from -maybe- getting a spot in another list, in perhaps a year (or longer) is really all that punishing? I'm sorry to break it to you, it isn't. If I brought up how I think you're running things poorly, it is because from an outside perspective I ALREADY think I have 0 chance of doing business with you; two years time in the furry world is an eternity, and I'm sorry but perhaps fursuit-aside, it's not really realistic to expect others to want to wait that long.
And that really is the whole point I'm making. Even if I did want something (and lets argue I also did for 'a lot of other people'), do you think the wisest way to do this is to sign up to 10 different lists in hope you reach a spot in one of these 10 different places within the year? I don't think so, personally.
Wait a year, to maybe get a spot for something that maybe willl be done in another year. I'm sorry, even if I did like someone as an artist a lot, isn't it a bit too full of it to think I really need it that badly? Signing up to a waiting list isn't that difficult, you drop your name and then wait months on end, it's not like I can't do it if I didn't want to.
They think because I bring this up it means I'm throwing a fit because I'm not getting something immediately. Don't be dumb, I've waited for some pieces for months, even when I'm one of the 'active slots', and I don't complain about it because I'm used to things taking time.
Of course it is easier to sign up to these lists and conform to it and unfortunately herd mentality is more appreciated when it comes to so many artist's personal bubble.
And whether these other people receiving similar criticism take it personally or not, that is their own issue; reality is that if they have a similar problem going on to the point where I think they should have some change of perspective in how they do business, it probably means I already had 0 chance of 'getting anything' from them in a respectable time frame because of it.
Again, yes.. I'm sorry. If I have to wait over a year to maybe obtain something from you, reality is that I personally consider you as someone I can't do business with. I don't know why people think it's so personal to be told this. I could count with one hand how many artists I would actually happily wait a year+ for just to get a chance. And I can't be the only one thinking the same when you see a 30 slot-waiting-list as a backlog.
But you know? It's more common to hear 'I don't have to justify myself' than 'Maybe I should think about it'; and the funny thing is that I'm not asking anyone to justify themselves, I'm simply explaining why I think they're not doing things the right way.
I never had an issue being forward and outspoken, and the consequences it may carry, that is just how it should be after all.
However I've also never had an issue with anyone I've actually done business with (Barring two people I guess, that's not bad out of like ten years or something!). I wonder if that is because I'm really such a difficult person to deal with, or perhaps I just have some common sense?

Patreons, beat the Waiting list!
Posted 8 years agoI honestly don't like Patreon and the way 99% of the people use it.
I can understand it for those artists who fully engage in their own work or who just want some supplementary income.
But so many content creators use it in so many scummy ways.
Today's highlight. "Patreon - Beat the waiting list!"
You know those artists with a lot of people waiting, because they already have an irresponsibly large wait list lined up for their work? Well if you join their Patreon and pay some extra money.. you can skip right ahead. Who cares if the rest have waited for however-long because you're the disorganised person.. you go right ahead in front of the line for any new openings!
Errata: I totally wrote content creatures instead of creators. It's because I like mingling with unusual creatures ):

"Raffled" Commission slots
Posted 8 years ago"Randomly generated number will decide who's the winner!"
Just remember to conveniently include in your submission the total cost of your piece.
And conveniently have the winners be the highest $$$.. constantly.
For added spice have one or two of the winners also be extra popular :D
Disclaimer: Again, I've never really taken part in one of these I think (THINK). But I guess I'd be more okay with it if I was one of those spicy winners when I do.. hmmm.

'Closed Species'
Posted 8 years ago...Sorry but what? That's such a dumb idea.
One thing is giving credit or wanting to be given credit, or even asking to be polite enough to ask if you can make one (I guess, if it's actually unique enough?) but.. come on honestly.. 'claiming' no one can make them besides one single person in the world etc etc and conveniently charging for 'allowing a new one to exist'?
Don't we already deal with enough trash in the art-fandom-realm to start supporting things like this?
And yeah I know, some of these have been around for a while now; honestly the only reason it bothers me is because of the part where 'only I can make one and I charge $$$$$ for it' that seems just gross. I'd understand it more if they didn't conveniently 'sell the right to exist', does that make sense?

What is the best use for old characters?
Posted 8 years agoI kind of ask myself that question a few times, I don't have 'many' characters but during the years I've certainly had a couple, but just as they come they go! Sadly I actually like them quite a bit, but I'm not really the type who indulges in giving them their own art pieces or using them all that much.
Is it better to just have them hanging around, pretend they never existed, or do the stereotypical 'hey who wants to buy random dog 17'?
I just never quite enjoyed the idea of 'selling characters', because it makes little sense to me. But.. really, I've obviously been proven wrong there many times on this and similar sites when it comes to that.

On the subject of reference sheets.
Posted 8 years agoThis one's a bit more simple.
Every artist is obviously free to choose what they do/don't do but..
If you can't really do work out of someone's 'reference picture(s)' not being good enough, when said pictures and/or the characters are very simple, straight forward and flat coloured because you specifically want a reference sheet, then you're kind of out of your mind.
I'm sure some artists have that requirement out of people using 'ultra cool 50 colours and tattoos all over plus specifically coloured feathers' or some crap (God knows there's a lot of super edgy characters showing up these days); but putting it up front in your commission requirements/journals as a general requirement is just the most massive turn off I've seen lately.
Now please let me fully disclaim that I've actually never been in this position despite not having had a reference sheet in like a decade and I'm not making this complaint out of me being personally affected. Regardless of that, I'm sorry but I have no desire to spend $xxx in a reference sheet. I understand now there's those 'layouts' or similar that artists release for free and then other people use them to charge a little and recolour them for you. But you know what? Some of us don't like having the same thing that everyone else does :D ...probably why we spend money in 'art' to begin with.. you'd think.
I'm mostly complaining about those whose art probably costs LESS than the standard reference sheet (or at least a good one, you know?). It's just dumb. No I'm not getting a $100-150 minimum piece of artwork I don't care to ever use so that you can draw me a $50 picture because my very simple character isn't simple enough for you.
And yes, again I do understand some characters are too complex and probably need it; and I also understand that with some artists it makes a lot of sense. Ie. Someone with rare slots coming out even though they cost $superpricey per character, said artist wants you to have a reference sheet: You probably just accept the fact that it's their requirement, I get that, and I get it that they can do it and honestly I don't mind it as much, because clearly you consider that person worth the effort already to snag the slot despite the difficulty to do so and the very high price entry point.
I know some people who are very picky if their characters aren't 'exactly how my reference says'. Yes of course, those people probably should have one if they're going to complain or make artists work extra to follow every little detail. But there's also a lot of us who just let their character change/evolve overtime depending on the artists you choose and the small freedoms they take.
No offence but I know from experience that the more you use a particular reference the less your character evolves, because it's just too easy for the typical artist to use said reference and make 0 artistic choices/decisions to churn out a piece faster and move to the next customer; I can't blame them, but it's proving a lot more real now than it was in the past with the higher amount of people trying to make a living out of this rather than doing it as a hobby that pays. And of course there are exceptions to the rule, but they are honestly relatively rare.

Another horrible way to run your auctions!
Posted 9 years agoSeriously I wish I could stop posting about 'dumb things' I see, but man are there SO MANY horribly bad ways to run things by super popular artists.
Most recent example of how not to run your auctions:
"Random ending time to discourage sniping!"
Yeah, seriously. Random ending time.
Paraphrasing:
"Auction ends on x day at a random time between x:55 and x+1:00"
Yes, this means there's still a 5 minute window where people know when the auction is going to close.
....And yes it sounds as dumb as it is, you have people bidding at that time and then suddenly being 'outbid' and 'losing the slot' because someone else bid a second later and the artist randomly closes the auction.
I think every single bidder for every slot got screwed over because someone else bid seconds later and then 'OH CLOSED'
I can't even BEGIN to express how infuriating this must sound to someone that loses the slot that way (disclaimer: I did not bid, and do not know any of the bidders). It just BOGGLES my mind that you would absolutely DESTROY the hopes of someone willing to fork out over 300 bucks for a single character slot that happens once every several months. This is not even 'oh i got sniped that's kinda shit' it's a 'wow the artist fucked me over with that 'random close' and I was trying to give him a lot of my hard earned cash? ...thanks for making me think I had a chance at all'
Holy shit people, are 'good artists' so stuck up they never check what other people do? I just don't get it.
"Wow what would you do then!"
That's why I ask that question, there's so, so many others that have already figured out the super simple method of "Auction ends at x time or 5 minutes after last bid." There's a reason it exists, there's a reason it's used, there's a reason it makes sense. Because it makes damn sense.
Wow would you look at that, it means you can't get sniped (if you really want the piece, 5 minutes is PLENTY to check if you're being outbid and the highest bid will get it. I mean, realistically the person with the highest budget will get 90% of the auctions. If you think 'random closing time' will help someone else get it.. that's stupid, the person with the deep pocket will just start really high and minimise the chances of most common bidders to apply for the slot regardless.
Man geeze, for being a pink dog I really get worked up by these things.

Regarding artists and their work commitments/sketch streams
Posted 9 years agoI was going to make a little rant regarding all the things related to sketch streams but.. I think I'll keep it incredibly simple this time:
If you're an artist and already have work to do, for the love of god give them some priority. You've already been paid to, or at least been in theory 'scheduled' to work for someone else.
I can't count the number of times some person who's got a drowning waiting list somehow happens to have the time to have 3-4 full days worth of sketch streams and does not appear to finish a 'full piece' faster than once per month. It's just so unethical in my eyes, and it's just so much worse if you're one of those people waiting as you just see everyone else 'skip the line' if they find these streams.
I personally liked sketch streams too until I realised so many artists who do them often are in the same boat of 'I have 20 people waiting for me but I can make instant extra cash on here'. It's kinda.. ew. :c
I mean, yes I understand everyone's got their own schedule and it can help pay bills, but I think there's a difference between "I kinda need some money now" and doing it constantly over and over again just because you can.

Why y'all let artists get away with being rude etc?
Posted 9 years agoI mean let's face it, if any company or business you went to copped an attitude towards you (or their employees) you'd probably say "Wow they're rude, I'm not going there again then".
Similarly if you knew there's this small cafe around the corner and you saw them telling someone off just because they can get away with it you probably should also think the same.
But here, you guys let people get away with anything and it's so annoying; like there are so many similar people who can fulfil the same role and yet instead of indeed 'moving on' you cling to the same. Is it so hard to understand you're only further encouraging the bad attitudes and that you're not actually getting anything in exchange?
I saw someone put up a typical Patreon 'pay and see' teaser, and you know, I personally don't really care. I mean, yeah it's annoying I suppose but ultimately it's not like we can't live without seeing things. (And it's the internet, it'll be out somewhere, but really do you put that much effort into finding most furry prons?)
However, the person should expect to have some people complain because.. it's the internet and they're being followed by thousands of people and you're suddenly asking for money to see some random content. I'm not saying whether they're right to complain, but the fact is they -can- and you know there's a 99% chance they will; and you should be able to handle these complaints or shrug them off.
But now new teasers come with this:
"This will be a teaser for now, if you do not complain about 'paywall' or that you have to pay just to see the full image i will post the image on here in a later date when i feel up to it. I don't care if you can't afford it, or if it pisses you off. Move on with your day and wait."
No offence, but -that- is what is enough for me to say "Well yeah fuck you too then?", I didn't really care before, but you shouldn't be able to get away with being rude while asking for money, even if it's your work!
However instead I assure you most people will either entirely ignore the fact that they wrote this, or even go as far as say "Oh boohoo I'm so sorry for you".
Shrug.

All those new retro systems!
Posted 9 years agoI've been reading a bit about them and I want so many things.

Like the zx spectrum vega+! I never played such things before.. so I wonder if it'll be that same "this is cool!" feeling or if it'll fall more along the lines of "I guess this would've been fun back then"

About those who complain of 'fake friends' and similar
Posted 9 years agoTLDR; You asked for it, stop whining?
So like.. more often than I'd like i see people whining or complaining about "oh whaaa whaaa my 'friend' just used me for artz".
I've always found these complaints incredibly annoying to be honest.
I want you to look at the majority of these 'oh so terrible people' and tell me how you would think you'd have a genuine friendship when you see any/all/most of these warning signs:
1) Usually has an overly slutty character (because how else are you going to make good use of free shit, duh; also yes I'm a hypocrite with a slut-dog shhh)
2) Always is posting comments and shouts telling every single good artist or commish-whore they meet how they're the best person in the world pretty much.
3) Always make sure to appear on every live stream they can find of a popular or high quality artist and force themselves to be the main conversation point even if they just say dumb shit.
4) 95% of their 'friend circle' tends to be a carefully chosen net of 'popular artists' and tend to casually use this as a way to get to even more of them.
5) There is almost never a single hint of a conversation that's actually meaningful yet they're always there.
6) They always say things like "Oh yeah I've always done this -unnecessary sexual comment-" or "Oh my that's such a sexy character mine would go great with it" etc.
7) Have a mile long list of 'favourite artists', 'awaiting art from' or 'would love something from'
It's just so f'ing annoying because it's obvious as all hell what these people are after and yet they -always- get away with it because every one of 'you' is like "Oh woo this person's so neat they're always sucking my e-dick I must keep them around!"
I generally don't mind it much but when a certain one or two of these individuals start popping out everywhere I go it does start irking me since I always have this innate need to call them out and tell them to shut up and go suck dick somewhere else o:
So like.. more often than I'd like i see people whining or complaining about "oh whaaa whaaa my 'friend' just used me for artz".

Old PC games! Multiplayer helps too?
Posted 10 years agoDo you guys have any old games that every now and then you feel like trying out again?
ie. We constantly have a craving for random simcity.. or simtower! or Age of Empires.. Etc.
...I like older games, I always feel they're more charmingly addictive!

He/She's back! For the 2000th time.
Posted 10 years agoYes people, we know, oh gosh he/she's back etc etc!
But get over it, it's like the 10th time in 5 years with a variety of screen names and always the same story, really can you still get 'excited' about it? Maybe you'll be less excited when you're the next in line of 'never finished work' instead, correct?
PS. No I didn't actually get 'burned' by the person in question, I'm just saying.

Slight bit of.. lots of uploads!
Posted 11 years agoSort of; not that many. Just whatever I find that hasn't been uploaded! I have a bad habit of forgetting to upload commissions.. and then forgetting I even had them. :C
Also not really in one go, defeats the purpose!
But hurray, purple dogs! Right? ...right?

Beasts fewwry. Or something..
Posted 11 years agoHeard of it? Basically furry fighting game, not happening (kickstarter goal is kinda far, no time left).
It seems interesting; the animation is pretty sweet and the main animator's style is definitely neat. BUT.. furry in mainstream FGC.. not so sure.
Also 45k to make a two character demo with hopes that some publisher will pick it up and fund the actual game? Yeah. ...Yeah.
Anyways, the point of this journal is actually something else! I found out they have a 'FA' (...good start for that PR right?). Man their shouts make me feel a bit sad.. irked. Million furries posting 'omg i got this idea for the gameeez' ...Yes I'm sure they're interested. Are 90% of nerdy furries 'hoping to be game designers'? (I mean lets face it, 90% of nerdy ...normal nerds are too but still).
I don't know, I'm a purple dog, I dislike many things. It comes with the color.

If only husky charm worked everywhere.

Bluh, ebay buyers are a pain sometimes.
Posted 11 years agoAnd you know who are the worst kind? Children buying with their parent's money and those teenagers with their own paypal accounts.
They have no patience, they expect everything to be done their way, blahblahblah. You name it!
Seriously if you buy something on a Friday at 4 o-clock don't e-mail me on saturday afternoon asking why it hasn't been shipped yet.
And then opening a paypal dispute on Sunday.
Holy shiftsdf. See, this is why you should have a general hatred towards people.
I sell something that's not stocked in many other places in Australia too, so they could be patient right! But nope.
It's all about curled tailed individuals I tell you. They're clearly the only trustworthy ones, particularly if they're purple.

Posted 11 years agoQuick, give lame last names to my husky! I may pick one, I know it's clearly everyone's life goal to name a purple husky.
Like..
Pkay cockweasel
Pkay fluffbutters
Pkay purplehusky
etcetc clever.
No seriously, I don't want to do the whole Indonesia facebook trick.

On the topic of those Daikimuras
Posted 11 years agoI see like lots of really nice/sexy art on those things!
BUT.. Well. I don't mean to be a dick, but what in the world do you do with a daikimura? (I mean.. besides the 'obvious' possibility of ..doing your pillow).
I mean, do you hang it on a wall? Kinda strange art on it no? ...Do you leave it in your bed? I guess you don't have many guests there..
Do you hide it in the closet? Then what the heck's the point.
I MEAN, if you are actually into doing a pillow I guess that's alright, we all got our kinks.
But if you arent.. the heck do you do with it.
For the record I do find some of them pretty sexy (image-wise). BUT seriously the heck, are there that many people with a pillow fetish?

And it's loud as eff.. :c
So what changed so much over these past few years?
Posted 11 years agoI remember yeaars ago I had a slight argument with the famous-now-FA-drama-spotlight actor and everyone seemed to say this person was the most awesome furry evur 'cause porn so good! While I was all "But ..complete dickhead bitch wtf you guys stop being dumb"
BUT now it just so happens all these popufur artists also think the person in question is such a dick and omg he's in charge of FA shit I'm so quitting "Making FA leaving journal!"
Weeeell.. I guess now instead of the furry bandwagon being about supporting this 'evil being' it's about being against it. Totally not hypocritical, I mean.. yes I'm sorry that glorious porn and the 100000 watchers and pageviews 'clouded' every other popular artist into hopes that they'd be best buddies with the person in question. Woops! I guess it's no longer necessary 'cause they also have a buncha followers now eh?
Either way, good luck to all of you guys moving over to whereverness!
