TFS 2018 report
Posted 7 years agoI've been enjoying bringing a little dance setup to TFS over the years, since I'm all about the blinking lights and wriggling. :) When Jace approached me about doing it again and said we could have a whole room I was estatic!
Zeebra volunteered to help move stuff (he has a truck) so I made a decent size pile of equipment and off we went!
The room wasn't titanic--it was two rooms with the airwall between them down--but it was the right size for everything but one event. We set up four meters of truss near one of the narrow walls and the sparkle curtain to make a sage-ish focal point. Two 32" monitors flanked the mains, not really doing anything but display the TFS logo, but they looked nice!
The event schedule was thrown together in a little more than a month but I think it was pretty solid. Kareoke got dropped since there was no (paid for)hotel wifi, but the fursuit games went well, people having fun with the beanie baby slingshots that Corby built. The advertised talent show was improvised, the MC decided to not go to the con but didn't tell anyone (???) but Zeeb stepped in and we had a few performers. The dance-off was CRAZY, room totally packed and people lined up in the hall. Ritchie kept the event moving (I liked the very quick judging), Zain did a great job with the music and the dancers were REALLY good, wow!
The friday dance was great, not packed but a really fun crowd. The saturday dance started off wierd...young folks coming in to sit in the middle of the floor and have conversations, that was odd. No harm in it though.
There was some bass resonance going on in the room (as always), got the worst of that EQ'd out saturday morning.
I made some easy to use lighting macros and Zeeb and Rheldar ran the lights for the dances, looked good and nothing blew up. I don't think I brought anything useless although the rollers were somewhat drowned out by the huge pile of wash lights aimed in people's faces. I neglected easy options to dim those.
Got to suit up and dance some, although the muzzle fan was being wonky friday and totally went on saturday. I know exactly where the issue is at least; it's the little USB cable that runs from the battery to the voltage bucking module. Easily fixed now that I know what it is.
Teardown went well, Corby and I got up early and started at 8am, some random people wandered in and helped. (thanks BrianPuppy, Giles!) Getting ahold of the rest of our crew was an issue since they were sleeping saturday night off; we were getting a little close to the deadline to be out of the room for my preference, but we got the key to the truck and Rheld and Zain showed up and did a lot of heavy lifting in the roasting heat.
So overall, lots of fun! Many thanks to all the work that a lot of people put in to making it all happen! :)
Definitely keep TFS on your list if you're looking for fun local events (to Texas) next summer.

TFF 2018 report
Posted 7 years agoWent well! I like the new hotel :)
Thursday Buddy (the gnoll, not the raccoon) drive up with me and we unloaded at the loading dock right off Marsalis. Super convenient except for the lugging up the loading dock stairs. (the dock is truck height and we drove a cargo van) Ty showed up and helped up get stuff up and running, the stage was little but it looked great!
The HDMI splitter was a pain...we were putting a 32" monitor up on the truss and splitting to a small TV on a mic stand for kareoke lyrics, and it was just really fussy and tempremental. Fie on it!
There were good crowds there thursday night. Definitely pushing into four-day con territory.
Rooms were great. A bit pricy, but big and snazzy looking with fridges. No complaints. We got to be on the third floor overlooking the atrium!
Elevators were always busy but on the third floor you can take the stairs so I mostly avoided taking the elevators.
The corral was never crazy busy. I think friday was the post packed time. It was so freaking large, even split in two for laser tag, that it's hard to judge. I think we need more signage though, some folks said they didn't know it was there. Story of my life at TFF. :)
I got to do the parade as Sumadeepika! Of course I had electrical problems, Corbeau was running late due to family crisis and I had to make do with some batteries that didn't like the current draw I was subjecting them to. But everything but the eyes worked, so no complaints. A young lady with a DAD head asked to walk alongside me in the parade, and proceeded to pingpong around squeaking at everyone and having a blast. Good for her. :)
Our live act, Exit Mouse, was fun, glad to have him. His audience wasn't huge but there were folks there. I'm happy we had front row seats with blower fans on them for the suiters. Karu the lop-eared puppybun was sitting there so I aimed a fan at him and his ears went flopflopflop the whole time which amused me greatly.
I got to dance with Corby a bit dressed up as Sumadeepika. While I'm happy with the suit, I was imagining that it would be more dance-ok than my other ones and that isn't the case. Partly it's the lit eyes that are hard to see through...also you can't actually see through as much of the eye as there is mesh, I should have trimmed away the sockets more before furring. Also the long curved neck is restrictive; you really can't lift your head up. This is unavoidable with the LED mane the way I made it.
I had a lot of fun suiting with Yejide though, further cementing her as my fave suit. <3 The boob fans were helpful, I left the cooling pack at home and didn't regret it. Lots of dancing, more enthusiastic than skilled, but hey whatever. Bumped into Karu again in the headless lounge during the dead dog dance and chatted a little bit, turns out we know each other from online! (it's a small world) Danced with him a bit, that was a lot of fun. I'd been noting that the dancers tended to just face the DJ and ignore each other which is a little sad. I can't really do my flailing dance style up close to someone, but bunnies and lions snuggling and swaying on the dance floor is cute too so no complaints. :)
Looking forwards to next year! <3

Furry Siesta 2017 wrap-up
Posted 8 years agoIt went well! I like the new hotel space with the exception of it being very isolated. There is just nothing to walk to nearby. Since we came in Corby's SUV, no problem, it just makes getting anywhere somewhat time consuming.
There was plenty of space! Tons of tables on the main side, a few chairs and tons of room for crazy suiters to run around in on the video game side. I was a little concerned initially about sharing space with the gamers, but the room was large and the airwall drank up sound so there was no real conflict.
I'd brought one of the big crank stands with a T bar to put lights up on but the cieling was pretty low...I could only crank it up a foot or so. Next time I'll bring truss totems.
It feels like attendance was a little lower than last year, but Corbeau thinks that may have just been the way the space was split up. Perhaps also because it was in a bigger space.
Freemasons were sharing the space, old guy with interesting costumes. They were nice...one of them meowed at Iggy at one point. Heh. They had a good sense of humor.
I had a good time dancing from many hours! Edgewise brought his fans for the dance floor and as always they were a godsend. I wore my new chest padding with fans, and while it clearly needs a little work on the strap front (the straps kept slipping off my shoulders) the fans blowing across my chest we're REALLY nice. Mmmmm!
The crowd was smallish but I was rarely the only one out there and the energy was good. A goofy coyote danced with me for a while, that was fun although I kept almost falling over... dancing with huge feet and poor vision is hazardous. No complaints though. :)

June dance, Saturday 6/17
Posted 8 years agoOkay, time to get these started up again!
Saturday around 7pm at me and Corby's place. Fursuits encouraged but not necessary, will have fans and a head tree as always.
The DJ's who will be performing at Furry Siesta will make with the music!
I want to do a series of lipsync performances first...this is aimed at fursuiters but anyone is welcome to. Not at all required of course, but let me know if you're interested so I can get the music you need! I promise the audience will be receptive. :)
This will be all-ages, guardians welcome. (Guardian also welcome if he wants to drive down from Dallas)
Let me know if you're interested or need any details!

TFF approaches!
Posted 8 years agoComing up on showtime!
This will be my first year running the consuite area at the con, and I'm feeling confident that it will go well because I will have a lot of help from great Austinites who are taking time out of their schedules to keep con-goers be-snack'd. :) Come downstairs to visit us if you want some soft drinks or chips, or just a cozy place to hang out!
Sadly I won't have any art in the art show this year (I will have some in the conbook though)--my free time has been sucked up with work on the lioness suit. This is my fourth fursuit build, and the second one for myself, so I'm excited that I'll have it done for the con!
(as an aside, this is also the second suit I've done this year...the first was Iggy, Corbeau's sabertooth, which I started after the last TFF and finished in time for Halloween. The lion I started in November after going to renfair with Buddy and Corby and getting the idea in my head)
I probably won't get to wear her too much, but I'll make the best of the time I have. Definitely a little dancing I may troll the hyenas at some point...out of love, purely out of love. <3
TFF will finally have a drag show, too, late friday night. We've been talking about this for years but finally it will happen. Check it out!
eeeeeeee!

Holiday dance, Saturday December 10, 7pmish
Posted 9 years agoIt's time again! Let's all bid Haby a fond farewell before he heads off to Microsoftland, and wriggle to some christmas/chanukah/etc themed tunes with red and green lasers.
This will be at me and Corby's house since campus is shutting down for the end of the semester and I don't expect it to be too crazy, but hey, one last chance to do some fursuit/otherwise dancing before buckling down for the holidays.
Shoot me a note if you're interested! :)

Art Night hiatus
Posted 9 years agoGonna take a break from hosting weekly meets for a while. I love y'all, but I really ask a lot from the folks I live with!
Still totally down with collaborative projects and doing stuff though.
Thank you for understanding, and for being such wonderful company. I don't take it for granted! :)

TFF 2016
Posted 9 years agoGood experience staffing in Kempi's, many thanks to Rheldar, Boz, Heather, Ty, and Zuli. Y'all worked really hard and made it go well!
From a selling perspective the art show was eh. I have 15 items in the show, 2 of them Lhexa's, and only sold three. (not the ones I'd expect to sell, either!) I may be stuck in the past re: what people want; Ethpee pointed out that most of the stuff there was really pretty full color artwork. It's not like years past when B&W pinups dominated. My cutesy watercolors probably would have done better back then.
People like the jokes, though! :) Even the ones that I'm not sure that I get myself!
The silver lining was getting to go around and give away a lot of the art that didn't sell. I found most of it good homes, and it makes me happy putting it in hands that appreciate it...and keeps the closet back home slightly less full.
I didn't get to prance around in my costume too much, but I had a nice time when I did. Almost immediately misplacing the battery for the head fan was stupid! The little fridge in the room was great for recharging the cooling packs though!
Corbeau was flitting all over the place with his camera for basically the whole weekend, but he ate with me so I got to see him a little. We danced a little on thursday night while Edgewise was in the main ballroom, and more late late Saturday night while Cozmic was playing to a mostly deserted consuite. We (and one red panda chap) enjoyed it at least!
Happy to see everyone, great to get to hug lots of folks! Got introduced to some new folks which was great, if you're one of them poke me and remind me what your name is 'cuz I'm SO BAD at names. :)

Star Wars skit
Posted 10 years agoWe watched the wholes series (sans ep 1) in one say this past saturday, and I felt motivated to write a little skit to perform in the middle. Kind of like Mystery Science Theater 300 does, y'know? :)
The skit is a conversation between other delagates/senators set after Jar Jar calls for the vote of no confidence.
Anyways, here it is. Thanks for Bauson, EJ, Bosgo, Sammy and Corby for performing it live for us with no rehearsal! :)
Warren7, who is badgerlike: (peevish, exacting voice) I’d like to call this meeting to order. Since the levitation lecterns are offline, we have to use this old meeting room, and I’m sorry about the damp conditions, but at least the Mon Calimari delagates have loaned us a sheet of waterproofed canvas that we can use to block some of the water dripping from the ceiling.
MonCalimari: (slobbery voice) It’s a tarp!
W7: Thank you, delagate from Mon Calimari. We appreciate your help staying dry…
LutrianReach, who has ottery features: (perky voice) I kind of like the damp!
W7: ...most of us appreicate your help staying dry, and…
LR: I was actually hoping there would be a water slide back here.
W7: There is no water slide in the Imperial Senate, delegate.
LR: But there COULD be!
W7: Yes, you proposed that last session. We spent a month on it before voting it down.
VeldtHegemony, who could be a hyena: (slow, deliberate voice) We already have the water here. We could use that canvas thing to rig one.
MC: (irritated) It’s a TARP!
VH: The tarp, right, We could pin the corners up there and there…
W7: *irritaed* We voted it down because the Salt Moths from Ibbid considered the inclusion of any sort of water feature to public spaces to be culturally insensitive to hydrophobic species such as themselves.
LR: But...it’d be fun!
W7: ...and an act of war. They were quite clear about that.
LR: (pouts) The salt moths are no fun.
W7: Yes, the month after was spent drafting a censure of them and all other ‘non fun species,’ and then voting THAT down before starting ANOTHER war.
VH: Okay, we won’t do that, then. So why are we meeting back in here? Something about lunch plans?
W7: No, this is a special session to discuss the Gungan delegate’s recent motions.
VH: *confused* But….you said that something deliciously stinky was back here.
W7: *sigh* No, I said there was something fishy about the clown delegate’s motion, that it stank of Sith influence, and that I wanted to discuss our coalition’s response to it before we voted.
VH: You’re using lots of food words again and it makes it hard to follow.
LR: *excited* If we’re talking fish, I vote for sushi! *holds up hand* All in favor?
W7: *irritated* We are NOT planning lunch, we’re talking about the Gungans. We haven’t even got coffee yet.
BothanIntern: *tremelous, voung voice* I have your drinks, sirs...please take them, this tray is very heavy..
LR: Oooh, coffee! Okay, sushi AFTER coffee. Thank you intern!
BI: *tragic voice* Many Bothans were scalded carrying the coffee here…
VH: Why are we back here again?
W7: *sighs* Because I suspect Sith influence, and I wanted to discuss the Gungan ‘No Confidence’ vote in private before we cast our votes. The Colation of Magellan Soverign States Not Including Vermich 5 may be the smallest of the voting blocs in the imperial senate, but we have a solid record of voting together, and anyone that wants our three tenths of a percent of the Senate’s voting power will be subject to our scruitiny!
LR: *claps* You do that SO well!
VH: I think it’s a good idea to take time scrutinizing.
W7: *momentarily hopeful* Well...good! That’s what we’re here for!
LR: Yes! And I’ve planned ahead for this scruitiny, we can do it at lunch. The Bothan intern got us a reservation! For sushi~~!
W7: No, we have to discuss this NOW, there’s a recess but the Gungan vote is up right now…
LR: No, we’re okay! I told the Intern to push the vote buttons for us. I told him to push the ‘yes’ button because sushi puts me in a good mood!
VH: I like sushi!

Party/dance on for this Saturday!
Posted 10 years agoThe weather is probably not going to be great, so possibly fewer kiddies at the door to scare and going out on the street may be a bad idea. But we can have fun anyways!
Badges are a good idea if you remember them! :)

Halloween dance on Halloween!
Posted 10 years agoWe'll be doing the Halloween dance at me and Corby's place this year after the candy-mongering kids dry up.
Before that will be a fine time to wander the neighborhood, and of course help greet the kiddies at the door. Should be fun! :)
If you need details let me know!

Furry dance on UT campus tomorrow!
Posted 10 years agoOMG it's tomorrow. Looking forwards to it, thanks in advance to Ethpee for letting us use his van to transport the AV stuff!
I am SO going to wriggle my butt off. *wriggle*
If you're interested or need info...last chance, contact EJ or myself! :)

Books or movies to donate for Folf?
Posted 10 years agoIf you're in Austin and if you have any books, movies or video games taking up space, Corby and I are putting together a pile of stuff to sell to Half Price Books. The money from that will go to help cover Folf's medical bills, which are considerable. Every bit helps though!
Furry Siesta thoughts
Posted 10 years ago Going in I was watching for two things:
* A 'tragedy of the commons' in public spaces with folks lined up to play video games, tap on their phones, or otherwise do easy-but-non-social activities.
* ...I forget what the second thing was. Eheh. :)
It was a success, though, folks were on the whole interacting with each other and staying busy if they wanted to. There were folks sitting in the corner with a laptop here and there, but fewer than I'm used to seeing.
The other groups with concurrent events in the hotel seemed to get along fine. Kudos to the staffers gently guiding us away from the wedding area while it was in full swing, that was thoughtful. :)
The noise level was a little high, and I say that as one of the folks contributing to it, but once you open up the video game console door that's gonna happen. Noise is a tough thing to control. I don't think it was ever at a level where conversation was difficult though.
The blower fan I brought was consistently in use. A few more would have been really nice, though, since suiters would often park in front of it for long periods. Intense blasts of air like that are AMAZING when one is warm (which for me is of course the point where I have finished putting the costume on in the first place) but it's pretty much a one-person thing...when we're not wrapped in faux fur gentle air currents are helpful, but you need more fans if you want to benefit the furred set.
Headless lounges are definitely great, but blower fans dotted around areas that suiters may be active in would be a great blessing. They aren't that loud...but they aren't free either. Ah well. :/
I hope it happens again! I really like the low-cost aspect and I think it was proven that people could come together and entertain themselves without a schedule. This hardly means that the traditional con is dead, but it's nice to know that there is a spectrum of organizations that can work.
Personal thoughts: I'd still LOVE for there to be a dance next time, space and budget permitting of course (for the licensing) but I'd like to push the fursuit lipsync harder next time. While I was allowing for it, people got in the kareoke mindset and didn't. Next time! :)

Dance/party, July 18
Posted 10 years agoLhexa's gonna be getting his doctorate and scampering off into his field (of theoretical physics) so we should get together and see him off!
It'll be the usual furry dance thing, just with an occasion this time. And I'll set up the lasers because physics. :)
So...Saturday July 18th, 7pm until late. Ask me if you have any questions!
