I have a question. I've been "DJing" off and on for friends for years, but it's just been with an old stereo (but lots of sound), my computer and songs I grab off the internet. I've done a small stint as a volunteer radio DJ so I know the basics of the equipment, but I was wondering how you get training and actually INTO DJing for real? I know the equipment costs a buttload, but how do you make your own music and the like?
Well first off, DJing and making music are two completely different things. Usually when a DJ also happens to make music, they are considered DJ/Producers as a formality. DJing is to playing music that may or may not be created by yourself, but in cotenuity and sometimes (often) mixed together in routines with the use of Turntables or similar technology. Usually when you play your own music that's usually all your own music but performed live through your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation (Where you make music or whatnot)) with the use of MiDi controllers, thats more of being a producer and less of a DJ (Like Deadmau5, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers) but still similar in principles in a way. Though DJs often DJ their own music and sometimes play other's :3
One way I learned was through self teaching. I started out using Virtual DJ, which is a DJing software that mimics the use of Turntables/CDJs (one could also use DJ controllers for this software, but sadly, only the pro version). There is a free version that has enough for one to learn off of, though I highly recommend trying to beatmatch by ear more than you look at the waveform on the top of the display, so it can be a little easier. Later, I moved onto software independent by getting me a Numark Mixdeck (which was like $800-$900 http://cachepe.zzounds.com/media/qu.....64c5fe0768.jpg) where I was able to keep myself able to mix completely by ear without having to use a screen :3. As for making music, my DAW is FL Studio 10. It is expensive but I found it to be a good one for EDM. Its got a lot of plug ins already to help you make a decent sound, but also feel free in exploring other VSTs to expand on ^.^
Hope this helps :D
