This was a commission I did last year for client who is rather avid fan of both Rosemary and TaiChi. This meant that not only would I have to produce a piece that was visuallly stunning but would have to have a high degree of accuracy since the client was not only knowledgable on the subject but he wanted to show it to his sensei. Fortunately he provided me with several VHS tapes to watch which let me actually study masters go through the movements and then pause the tape to do sketches. This picture was also fun because I purposely studied a lot of Maxfield Parrish's work before starting so I could mimic his color palette for this piece. I also wanted the clouds to mirror the waves washing on to the beach. The client was very happy and the sensei approved of it. Size roughly 12"x 16" medium color pencil with some marker, gouache and Micron pen. There will be a matted limited edition print of this at FC08 art show.

Thank you for the feedback. I had to strike a balance between what was proper form and what made for good artsitic composition, so mentally ran a couple katas back and forth in my mind until in my mind I hit the right point ot hit the equivalent of the screen capture button in my head. Then I did my initial thumbnails from there. Fortunately it appears that if you properly execute the katas the result is something that is also visually appealing to behold anyways!
Those waves.. you =SO= made me imagine Katsushika Hokusai's The Great Wave. ( http://www.uic.edu/depts/ahaa/class.....1/L22/22-1.jpg ) Great Work!
Well I had help from Smudge
Smudge who gave the piece, and for that matter most of my pieces, a looking over before I went to final color. She helped me correct some issues I was having with drapery in the piece. When it comes to clothes she is my onsite clothing expert!
