Faolan was hanging out with his friends Isaac and Thardix, along with Akylu, Faolan’s girlfriend, at the library when Gem showed up with here sketch pad, beaming with great delight.
“Hey, guys!” she said, and it was obvious she was thrilled about something.
“Oh, hi Gem,” Fao replied, surprised by her sudden appearance. Gem was the newest member of the group, but she is very friendly and quick to find things she likes about others. And her joyous moods and flashing smiles is infectious; Akylu can’t help but grin back in return. “Looks like something made you excited today. I wonder what you are so ecstatic about?”
“It is this: I was visiting my friend Emily’s house earlier today. Her son, Xander—”
“W-what a minute! Emily has a son?!?” Isaac interrupted, clearly disbelieving what he was hearing. “But she’s only twenty! How could she have cubs at twenty?”
Gem glared at Isaac, making him flinch. “Emily is already full grown, unlike you, and therefore she can have as many cubs as she wants, when she wants them.” Taking a deep breath she continued. “Anyway, as I was trying to say, Xander is so cute that I just had to draw him, and I wanted to show you what he looks like.”
Gem flipped through here tablet until she found the drawing she was looking for: a cute, padded little cougar cub playing with blocks. Faolan, Akylu, Issac, and Thardix all stared in awe at the little cub. Gem went on euphorically: “Xander was born only last year. He’s ten months old now, and will be celebrating his first birthday in two month’s time. He’s the sweetest cougar cub I had ever met! So sweet, in fact, you could almost believe he’d stay that way his whole life!”
Thardix looked up at her in wonder. “Wow, Gem, this almost makes me wish I had a child of my own. I had to admit, I’m jealous.”
“It sure reminds me of the days when I was a pup,” Faolan commented, remembering my young, carefree days. “That was back before I turned five, more than thirteen years ago.”
“And you were just as cute then as this cub is now,” Akylu teased. Gem giggled.
“I was not!” Fao retorted.
“You were too!” she countered. “Your mom showed me pictures of you of when you were little! Admit it, Fao; you can’t deny how cute you were back then!”
“Like you weren’t cute also!” he argued.
Just then, Gem had an idea, but she kept it secret so that the others didn’t know. Instead, she said, “Hey, how about we meet up tomorrow at the abandoned daycare center on the outskirt of town? I’ve got something to share with you that no one else should know about. My friends Tanya and Natalie will also be there.”
Thardix recoiled upon hearing the place. “The abandoned daycare center? Why there?”
“Yes, the abandoned daycare center,” Gem confirmed. “What? Did something about the place upset you or something?”
Thardix shuddered. “Yeah, something about the place upsets me alright. That place, that place was cursed. Back when I was eight, I was there to pick up my little brother and walk him home, like I did everyday before the curse was casted upon it. But one day, when I came to escort him home, the curse hit the building, and every adult in the building was fused to the nearest cub. I happened to be closest to my brother, and so our bodies fused together. Hours later, the government magic agency arrived to undo the spell and return everyone to normal. But during that brief time…” he shuddered again, fur and mane rippling, wings shuffling. “During that time, our identities were merged, our memories shared, and our spirits joined. Even after the separation, neither my brother nor I were ever the same again.”
“So the curse is still there?” Isaac asked.
“No, it has been lifted,” Thardix replied, “but the residue magic remained behind. This residue thickens over time, and if it is thick enough, it will curse any individual who enters. It won’t be thick enough to be permanent, nor would it cause the same effect as the original curse. It is still dangerous, and even more so when fueled by your darkest fears.”
Faolan considered the implications of this risk. “Alright, so what if it is dangerous? Would there be a chance we can escape without too much trouble?”
Thardix snorted derisively. “About one in a hundred, and only a fool stupid enough to disregard the dangers of the place would dare enter.”
“Then we’d all be fools, ’cause I doubt it will do us much harm,” Gem said confidently, somewhat stubborn in her ways. “Besides, I’m not the one who is afraid of entering creepy, cursed haunted buildings like that daycare center. Furthermore, we will only be there for a few minutes. Surely it couldn’t catch us that quickly.”
Thardix moaned. “Can’t we go somewhere else?” he whimpered, “I don’t want to go to that place ever again. I just can’t stand being anywhere near it.”
“Aw, c’mon, Thardix! What is adventure without some danger risks?” Isaac prodded.
Akylu sighed. “I guess we will just have to take the chance. I don’t want to stand here listening to you guys bickering back and forth all day.”
“Oh, goody!” Gem squealed excitedly. “How about at nine a.m. tomorrow? I mean, today is Friday, isn’t it? That means we have tomorrow off! See you all in the morning, guys!”
With that, Gem gathered up her belongings and skipped off out of the library. Faolan, Thardix, Isaac, and Akylu all exchanged glances. Thardix shook his head, ebony mane rippling, while Isaac merely shrugged. Everyone seems very uncomfortable about this, and Faolan just started getting a really bad feeling on where this is going…
