Illustrator is a wonderful program, though it can be a bit cumbersome to try to use it for more traditional art. Have you found the tool to turn line strokes into outlined shapes? It's a great one to have in your arsenal to be able to more finely manipulate outlines, and avoid some printing/compatibility issues I've run into with stroke weights not always carrying over properly when exporting/importing to other programs. Also, watch out for stroke width scaling or not scaling when you aren't expecting it when resizing objects. I ran into that a few times when learning Illustrator, and even before that when I was starting out with vector work on Inkscape.
