The Guardians of Life: Justice
Chapter One-
Chance Meeting
Sunlight streamed into the cavernous halls of the Shadow Vulpine stronghold of Hydyraen, signaling the birth of a new day, of which the Shadow Vulpines spread negativity throughout the land of Nyethra. For generations, the Nyethran beasts have been attacked kidnapped, and overall had their lives tampered with by the Shadow Vulpine. With them around, having hope is just not possible. The new leader of this diabolical clan is particularly ruthless. No one really knows where he came from, or what his real name is. One day he just showed up and took over Hydyraen. He is so merciless, it is said he even kills to send out his messages on behalf of all the Shadow Vulpines. The beasts of Nyethra named him Arcane.
Most of the Shadow Vulpines had already emerged from their underground bunkers and are heading on their way to the center of Hydyraen, where Arcane would be waiting to give their orders for the day. Most of them were walking slowly, slumping and dragging their paws, as if they dread what Arcane had to say to them. It is as if the other members of Hydyraen are noticing how harsh Arcane truly is. What can they do, though? Arcane is their leader, and in Hydyraen, the leader’s word is not the law, but the way of life. If the way of life were to be disobeyed, it usually meant death for the offender.
One fox straggled behind the rest, looking as if he were hoping none of the others would notice him. A nervous look represented his face as he crouched down, trying to make himself look as inconspicuously small as possible. Breathing heavily but silently, he sat and watched the other foxes slump towards Hydyraen Hall, the heart of the stronghold where Arcane waits. The crowd began to thin out, and his breathing became easier, but he did not take his eyes off of them. Flattening his ears in paranoia without his realization, he began to walk fast paced in the opposite direction, determined to get as far away from Arcane as he could. He broke into a run, running as fast as he could, as if he were running for the sake of his life. He could not bear the thought of Arcane’s tyranny any longer. This fox hated committing bad deeds. He hated his own kind his entire life, and since Arcane rose to power, his desperation to leave Hydyraen reached the breaking point. He hated he gets no choice in who he gets to be. He hates that he has to be evil. He hates who he is, and now, he wants runs to run away from it all, to be his own self, free from dictation from Arcane.
The thought of freedom drove him ever forward, to the gates of Hydyraen. It was just yards away… Feet… Inches…
Now he was looking up. Up at a scarred face several yards away, Arcane’s face, as it gave its hypocritical speech about how “good” the Shadow Vulpine’s influence has been on Nyethra. Confused, the rebellious fox looked around for the gates to his freedom, only finding the other foxes listening eagerly to what Arcane was saying. The fox realized he had dozed off and dreamed he was chasing his freedom. Frustrated that his escapades were not real, he stamped his paw on the ground, realizing too late that between his paw and the ground was a pile of fur, his paw made connection with it. The fox in front jumped up and yelped. She whirled around and snarled at him, nearly biting his muzzle off. Recoiling backwards with flattened ears, he tripped into the fox directly behind him, who retaliated by swatting him in the side of the face with a handpaw reinforced with dark energy, blinding and deafening him. He was sent falling to the ground, landing hard on his chin and biting his tongue. Tasting blood and seeing nothing more than a black fog, he tried to find his paws, but he felt one of the foxes stepping on his back, immobilizing him. He heard them saying something, but he could not make out the words directed at him. He tried to get up again, but the other fox would not let him stand up, only pressing down harder and yelling indistinct words. He could not understand a word they were saying, and they wouldn’t let him stand up. He felt helpless. His assaulter began pressing even harder. Even under his deafness, he hears the dull crack as his spine began to collapse. Arcane’s influence was driving all the foxes in Hydyraen to bloodthirsty means! The victim thought his assaulter would kill him right there!
Then there was commotion above him. He felt the footpaw leaving his back, and as it did, his vision and hearing started to return. He did not get up. He listened as he heard snarling and hissing somewhere behind him. Being somewhat of a pacifist, he hated it when there was fighting going on, because he was afraid he would get involved if he even got too close. He realized that the pair of foxes was quarreling over him. He also realized one of them was fighting for him. He had become so convinced that Arcane had corrupted every fox in Hydyraen that he thought no one was capable of showing kindness anymore. Being proven wrong in this case gave him strength. It gave him confidence that maybe; just maybe, there are others against Arcane as he is.
The fighting behind him ceased. Both foxes were panting heavily. One of them spat several vulgar words at the other, and the victim heard the receiver walk away. He had noticed his savior looking down on him. Suddenly shameful, he flattened his burning ears.
“Get up. You look like a fool,” she spat. The voice belonged to a vixen by the name of Shade. Several years ago, she was found outside Hydyraen, starving. Skymae, the previous leader, took her in and nursed her back to health himself. Ever since Skymae died, Shade was in constant bad moods. She must miss him a lot.
The fox saw Shade grab his arm and yank him to his paws. He found himself looking into her fiery eyes and saw anger in them. But somehow, he knew they weren’t directed at him or the fox that attacked him. Could it be Arcane? Herself?
“You okay?” she asked, looking away.
“I-I- yes. Thank you,” the fox said nervously, afraid she might strike out at him.
Shade turned and looked at him, “I see you’re not the social type. What’s your name?”
“M-my name? Aerobolt.”
Aerobolt saw her eyes’ auras change to shock and surprise as they widened, “You are Aerobolt!?” she exclaimed loudly. Other foxes around them glowered at her, demanding her silence.
“Y-yes ma’am,” Aerobolt stuttered.
Shade couldn’t hide her incredulity, “You! But-you!” she spluttered, pointing at him shakily.
Aerobolt had no idea how to respond. Why was this vixen so surprised to hear his name? Surely no one could be interested in him? Clearly enough however, this vixen couldn’t believe he’s Aerobolt. But why…?
“I’m sorry. Does my name mean anything to you?” he asked.
Before Shade could answer, Arcane’s loud, eerie voice echoed around them. “Alright vulpines! Disperse!”
With that the foxes of Hydyraen began to flood out of the Hall. They were pushing and shoving each other out, and the crowd caught Shade as she called out, “Yes! Meet me--!” but the other foxes drowned her out.
Trying not to lose sight of her, Aerobolt stumbled forward, yelling, “Where!? Meet you where!?” But a fox had pushed in front of him, and he lost sight of her. Letting out a frustrated growl, he pushed forward to try to find her again. He had to find her. He needed to know why Shade needed him. “Shade!” he yelled. For a brief second he thought he heard her respond, but there were so many foxes around him, it was impossible to tell for sure. He continued to call her name, but he got no response each time. After a couple of minutes, he found himself alone, looking at the Hall doors.
‘Why does Shade need me? What’s so important that she needs me for? Why does it have to be me? What’s so special about me to attract the interest of her? No! She can’t want to be--!’
“Mister Aerobolt.”
The voice chilled Aerobolt’s limbs and made his fur stand on end. He whirled around with dread plummeting into his stomach.
Arcane.
“S-sir?” he began nervously, more nervous than he’d ever been.
Arcane walked past him, growling. “Come with me. We need to talk.”

I really like the book your writing. I think it's got a great sense of atmosphere and I really like how you describe Aerobolts personality, I feel really sorry for the tough times he's probably going through only at the age of sixteen.. He reminds me of myself at times. Keep up the good work! :3 :)
