Back to my Equestria dreamscape, many of my dreams from Ponyville are nothing more than slice of life dreams about living in a land populated by brightly colored talking ponies. This is one of those moments.
The little filly is called Golden Dawn, and when she is not in school or playing with her friends she can usually be found helping her mother run the family booth in the Ponyville’s market square. Her father is a conductor on the CMR, Canterlot Manehattan Railroad, and while his job keeps him away from his family for days on end he is a very devoted father and husband.
Golden Dawn’s mother supplements the family’s income by making and selling ribbons and bows for both mares and stallions. Now Golden’s mother Blue Rose is very good at making her product, but her daughter has a natural knack at selling them.
So I guess it was inevitable that eventually one of us in our household would succumb to Golden’s ruthless sales pitches and relentless cuteness. Since Carousel’s job as delivery pony results in her spending hours in the Market Square on market days, and she has longest mane and tail I guess she was prime candidate for the little filly’s sale pitch. Besides Carousel has been experimenting with different mane style recently. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10969067/
Not only is Golden good as selling her mother’s products but also she has a talent for grooming and styling ponies’ manes and tails. So not only can she sell you a silk brocade bow she’ll show how to style your mane so both your hair and her mother’s product look there best.
So when Carousel came home one day from work with violet bows in her braided mane and a matching bow tied to her tail it was not too big of a surprise. Around the dinner table that evening it was source of much talk with Carousel discussing with Petina about what color of bows would look good in the white unicorn’s mane and tail.
After dinner and the dishes were done we then spent the rest of the evening together lying on floor by the fireplace. Carousel and I read the latest edition of the Happy Mare’s Home Journal http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7674093/ and Petina worked on edits for her next story. All and all it was nice end to a pleasant day.
To be continued.

Little Golden Dawn looks cute enough to be a heart breaker in the upper left sketch,
Yeah, Petina has already stated Golden Dawn will probably be quite a looker when she grows up and becomes a mare, and with her intelligence and drive she'll will most likely have quite a few stallions, and maybe a few mares, interested in her.

Cute filly! Creepy name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden.....n_%28Greece%29
I'd be curious to see what her ribbons for stallions look like.

This brought up a surprising thought for me, actually.
There's no Wal-Mart in Equestria to go pick up a dozen spools of industrially-made and mechanically glossed ribbon.
But yet some of Rarity's designs are practically steeped in bows.
I'm now kind of curious as to how much work went into pre-industrial ribbons.

There are many things that nowadays we take for granted that once were much more precious and valuable. I remember reading about during the American Revolution one of the things that restricted the production of uniforms for Colonial forces was a lack of sewing needles and pins. If I remember correctly one of the things the French gave us were several thousand sewing needles and tens of thousands of pins to help the war effort.
And you can still see the shadows of it in today's culture, yet we've forgotten what it means.
Imagine the reaction to modern christmas package wrapping. The ribbon around the outside of the box would be worth more than what was inside!
And on top of that; Ribbon cutting ceremonies, the short snips of colored ribbons shown for military decorations...

Ah, but you're forgetting one detail - ponies have MAGIC.
My headcanon has the unicorns being responsible for a lot of the finery and decorations - Earth Ponies are too hard-working and sensible (not counting the pink one) and Pegasi might not want to be burdened with 'stuff'. Thus, the cosmopolitan (and unicorn-heavy) Canterlot is also a center for fashion and design, as evidenced by Rarity's aspirations.
As far as making bright, sparkly ribbons go, weaving silk isn't THAT hard, and the animal-friendly ponies might have worked out a deal with the silkworms for an easy supply (silk coccoons are boiled, with the worm inside, because otherwise they ruin the silk when they hatch). Ribbon looms are much smaller than a full-sized fabric loom, and while complicated, are well within the Near Industrial capacity of the ponies. One could even have magically-enchanted looms, turning out yards of ribbon rapidly from spools of thread, but there's no reason it even needs magic to be run. I have an amusing mental image of the sheep in Equestria being skilled weavers...
Of course, the ponies have other things at their disposal - the sparkly ribbons might be such due to a light dusting of amethyst powder, or some magically-woven starlight...
Ribbons need not be silk, of course. Simple linen or cotton works wonders. And when you have access to transformation spells, you can make threads out of the abundent gemstones in the area. I'm surprised that Carousel hasn't turned up a few hoof-sized gems while plowing the garden...
