I believe that Xerneas and Yveltal play a more important role that we might think, so deas Zygrade, the pokemon of order.
Xerneas gives life to pokemon and plants alike while Yveltal destroyes and causes death to many. They probably whent through a massive battle with eachother. If X wins, the world would live eternally without death and the planet would over populate, but if Y wins, the world would be destroyed and it would be nothing but a rock of dust and lava floating in space. Arceus might of realized that problem and created Zygrade, to keep a balance between life and death. Thus, I can conclude that without X or Y, Mew's children would be nothing but pieces of meat.
Also, the who came first question, the universe or Egg came first.
