Tufted trexes were originally found in northerly territories covered in snow for the greatest part of the year. They are very large, hardy creatures covered in thick fur-like plumage that protects them from their harsh environment. The tufts are not true ears but are instead slightly mobile bundles of feathers that the rex uses to better localize the origin of sounds echoing across the vast tundra. Their tails tend to be shorter and better insulated.
Tufties tend to be social and travel in family groups dominated by the eldest female. However it is not unheard of for an individual to travel alone. Females are on average larger than males and are very protective of their young. They lay nests of up to three eggs and brood them over the short summer season on the tundra. The young are resilient but slow growing and may depend on their mothers for up to five years before they can become fully independent.
The large northern variety is the original line but smaller subspecies have cropped up in the south. It is rumored that some may even be tamed and ridden if one has the strength of heart and size of nads to attempt such a thing. Life in the more forgiving south allows the tufties to breed individuals with tufts and tails of every length and plumage in colors as varied as their avian cousins.
