The Guardians of Life: Justice (Book I)
Chapter Eleven-
Confrontation
“Wow. I cannot believe something like that actually happened to you! I am absolutely astonished you are still alive!” Shade said.
It was the morning after the fiasco involving the Bandits, and the morning sun was already making the area much too hot for Aerobolt to bear. While Shade was replacing Storm’s gauzes, she found a compass in the pack Plazma had. With it, they were able to get their bearings back east, and back to the river.
“That voice telling me to go further down… I can’t even begin to grasp what it sounded like… I cannot even tell for sure if it WAS a voice. It was like someone from the Ethereal Sky was reaching out to me… I had to have drifted far enough to reach it. But who could it have been?” Aerobolt wondered.
“Maybe it was Iridescence,” Storm said, half joking.
“She wouldn’t!? Would she?” Aerobolt exclaimed.
Shade shrugged. “She is the Goddess of Tutelage after all. Guidance is just a part of what she stands for. She was the one who led me to you after all.”
Aerobolt’s shock was apparent. “What?! Are you serious!? How!?”
“She comes to any Guardian, particularly higher ranked ones, like us Arch Guardians, when the conscious is at its most vulnerable state and when the mind is not active. In dreams for example. She came to your mind when you were dying. Your mind was too inactive to keep any spiritual presence away. She was distant and almost unreal because you were dying. In dreams, she is a lot more clear, albeit still kinda hazy,” Shade answered.
Aerobolt nodded slightly. “Oh I see. Kind of. What’s she like?”
“She’s a beautiful pure white fox with magnificent blue eyes. She was called Iridescence, for her fur seemed to radiate every color imaginable, even in darkness. It is said she could wield all seven Forces of Life, as well as control the very balance of nature itself. Because of such a legend, she is also called the Goddess of Life.”
“All seven? You mean she had no Bane?” Aerobolt asked, surprised.
“Nope. That and all the Forces seemed to be equal in her strength, as if all were her strongest.”
“Wow. Was there really someone that powerful all those years ago?”
“Yup. Now she’s charged us to protect her legacy. Me and the other six Arch Guardians, as well as our leader Fielra, and all other Guardians from the oldest, to the newest newborns, including Storm, and now you, Aerobolt!”
“I-I am honored!” Aerobolt said proudly.
“All of us at the Haven of Being are suspicious that Arcane is up to something that will harm her beloved legacy. Then there is you, the fox born against Arcane right from the start. Iridescence knew you would come long before you were even born. Therefore she knew you’d be the one to save us all. She came to me in a dream, telling me to find a Shadow Vulpine who bore the name Aerobolt. She said he’d be the one to save her legacy from Arcane’s destructive intentions. When I found the fox after ten years of fruitless searching, finding out that he was a pacifist barely out of his cub years was a real shock to me!”
“Yeah… I remember your reaction… Wait. What? Arcane is plotting against the Guardians?! Save her legacy from him? What is that bastard planning?!” Aerobolt exclaimed.
“He is planning… to rule Nyethra under his rightful place!” snarled a sickeningly familiar voice.
Aerobolt whirled about. “What the--!? Who said that!?” even though he had a bad feeling who.
A shadow crossed his path. It was in the form of his cubhood rival. Isrir.
“That is far enough Aerobolt. You dare not take a step further. You too Shade, or should I say Nova.”
“Don’t you dare use that name to address me, you filthy swine!” Shade snarled furiously.
“Well now, aren’t we being tart? I should teach you manners if only I weren’t outnumbered,” Isrir said in a mocking voice.
“You seem awfully brave since you ARE alone. Just what do you think you can do to stop us?” Shade demanded.
“I plan to take you and mister Aerobolt over here back to Hydyraen where the pair of you belong. You are both Shadow Vulpine, and thus, belong in Hydyraen with Arcane. It is your destiny,” Isrir sneered.
“No way you are taking my friends away!” Storm said boldly.
Isrir turned his cold glare at him. “Oh? And what is a pitiful cub like you going to do? I have no quarrel with you. Get in my way, and you die.”
Storm backed up a step; a terrified look crossed his face.
Aerobolt was furious. “Why don’t you just get lost Isrir!? I thought that Guardian killed you back at the Hydyraen entrance!”
“Oh? You really think I’d let a wimp like that kill me? Not a chance!” Isrir guffawed haughtily.
Storm growled. “Don’t talk like that about Master Plazma… It makes me upset…” he glowered at Isrir.
“And what are you going to do about it, cub?” Isrir sneered. When Storm did not move he laughed again. “Hah! Shows the Guardians have no spines! Why doesn’t Arcane just attack them already? They ARE the only forces against him right now!”
“Wrong.”
“Huh?” Both Isrir and Aerobolt said. Storm was the one who spoke.
“We are not the only forces against you lot. On the way here, Plazma and I informed the Kobold Warriors of your terrorism… and now they are on our side.” He glared at Isrir menacingly.
Shade sounded proud. “Wow! That’s very good, Storm!”
“Why you!” Isrir began to raise his paw.
Aerobolt reacted first. “No!” he waved his paw at him madly trying to use a darkness Force at him, but instead, he directed the sand on the ground into his eyes. Isrir staggered backward, shouting and rubbing his eyes.
“Why you son of a--! I will send you to hell for that!”
“I thought you were already planning to do that,” Aerobolt spat before flinging more sand unintentionally at him.
It didn’t seem to faze Isrir as much this time, however. “Argh! It’s going to take WEEKS to get all this out of my fur! You will regret this Aerobolt! Yo’ve always been such a goody-goody… And now it’s time someone put you in your place!” He charged at Aerobolt, covered in the same dark energy as usual.
Aerobolt jumped out of the way, just in time, and as Isrir flew past, he stamped his paw on his tail, and Isrir was sent falling flat on his chin. “I already AM being put in my rightful place! The Guardians! There is nothing I will let you do to stop me!”
“Oh yeah!?” Isrir jumped back up and pointed at Aerobolt. “ I was always stronger than you! You really think you stand a chance against me!?”
“He does! He has us!” Shade proclaimed.
“Shade…”
Isrir did not speak. He just fired a dark bolt at Shade, who fell to the ground unconscious.
“Miss Shade!” Storm squealed.
“You!” Aerobolt roared. Aerobolt was furious. He couldn’t let Isrir get away with that! No way… Not ever.
“Weak! I told you, you were weak!” Isrir hollered triumphantly. He turned to Storm, who just cowered away from him. “Aw… look at the scared little cub…”
“Don’t touch him!” Aerobolt snarled.
Isrir turned back to Aerobolt. “And what are YOU going to do about it? You never wanted to fight me, have you? You never wanted to defend yourself. You are weaker than those pathetic piles of fur--!” he was cut off by an uppercut delivered by Aerobolt. Isrir was sent flying upward, until he crumpled at Aerobolt’s paws. Aerobolt instantly stepped on his back.
“Oh déjà vu,” Aerobolt said in a calm voice. “Oh how the tables have turned, huh?”
“You really think? I am scared of you?” Isrir snarled.
Aerobolt pressed harder, making Isrir growl in pain. “No. I do not expect you to be afraid of me. I expect you… to be inferior to me… like how you expected me to be of you…”
“Not a chance you waste of fur!” Isrir growled.
“No one’s here to save you. Shade saved me then. The difference today: no one can save you. I will make sure you never haunt me again.” Aerobolt vowed angrily.
“On the contrary, Aerobolt. If you kill me, my spirit will haunt you until you die, and then I will haunt you in the afterlife,” Isrir countered.
“Only one problem. You will be in the pits of hell, and I will be at large, in the Ethereal Sky,” Aerobolt spat.
Isrir roared and pushed up on Aerobolt’s paw. Aerobolt, who did not expect it, was launched onto his back as Isrir got back to his paws, and turned instantly on him. “You are coming with me, whether you like it or not!” he went to cast another Force.
“No!” Storm was sprinting towards Isrir, his own handpaws outstretched in a casting pose.
“Rise of the earth!” Isrir growled, eyes glowing green briefly. Large spires of earth rose up and barred Storm from Isrir and Aerobolt. They nearly impaled him from underneath, making him cry out in shock.
“Damn you, Isrir. Damn you…” Aerobolt growled as he tried to get to his paws.
Isrir quickly incapacitated his movements. “Was that supposed to insult me, you whimpering cub? Don’t make me laugh!” there was such a fire in Isrir’s eyes that Aerobolt never seen before. He knew Isrir hated him, but this much? Aerobolt’s jaw almost dropped in shock. “You will pay for just existing! If Arcane didn’t want you back alive, I would just kill you right here!” he roared with such anger, it made Aerobolt cringe. Aerobolt couldn’t move. And no one COULD save him. Shade was out cold, and Storm, barred from them in a cage of Earth spires. He was utterly helpless. Utterly alone. Utterly doomed.
‘Shield yourself… control Light…’
What!? That voice again! But this time, it had a feminine touch to it that Aerobolt barely understood. Use Light to defend himself? That sounded like a good idea, but how? Isrir was already about to fire dark bolts straight into his face at point blank. Next time he woke up, it’d be back in Hydyraen, he knew. He had to act now.
“Feel my wrath!” Isrir screamed with such negative emotion, his power made his body radiate with blackness. With that, he fired off those emotions straight at Aerobolt’s face.
The last thing Aerobolt saw was the sun. He saw how bright it was. For a very brief moment before he blacked out, he shielded his eyes from the sun, then the entire world turned white. It stayed white then it turned gray. Then black. Then he was gone.
